Babybug magazine is a board magazine published 9 times per year and is too good to miss. Designed for the 6 mos. to 3 year old it has durable pages simple text, clear bright pictures and is printed 9 times per year. The format is predictable with an opening story about Kim (a gender neutral child) and Kim's stuffed rabbit "Carrots". Following are short poems and stories perfectly designed to be acted out while being recited. There is no advertising. I can't recommend this magazine highly enough. I've used the poems to successfully transition kindergarteners between activities and to discuss topical subjects such as picking tomatos from the garden, chopping vegetables for soup and eating berries off the vine. This allows children to be exposed to more options besides reading just books. The short poems are simple and easy to follow along for a younger child. The book is small enough for smaller hands and still more durable than a usual magazine.

Interactive magazine that has children poems, stories, music, and small games. They have interactive move alongs as well. Harder cover so that it wouldn't tear or rip as easy as a regular magazine.

A magazine intended for infants, toddlers and their parents, the October 2011 issue has stories and nursery rhymes about going to bed, dreaming, bears, hands clasping, eyes blinking and more. The stories feature illustrations with bright colors, bold borders, and large characters that sometimes take up the whole page. All of the stories are quickly delightful and only one in this issue may give elder readers pause. A reprinting of Edward Lear’s nonsense limerick “B was once a little bear” and purposeful misspellings will cause those reading out loud (everyone due to the age level of this magazine) to trip over the words. The story "Kim and Carrots" features reoccurring characters in every issue that little readers can get used to. These pages only measure 6 x 6.5 inches, easier to grasp by little hands, although the pages are slicker than board books which could pose difficulty for the very young reader. These brilliant, vivid and soft illustrations can serve to capture the short attention span of an infant. The magazine provides parents with an activity idea in combination with the little rhyme about blinking. Also, on the back cover, Babybug points parents to the website for the magazine for more parenting tips on child development. This website does not have any advertisements on it and is simply a resource for parents and teachers working with this age group. It does provide a link to the publisher’s site which is primarily a list of items they have for sale. The publisher is Cricket and they put out a variety of children’s magazines, gifts and books. At about $4.44 an issue and nine issues a year, this magazine is well worth it for public libraries, if only because it fills a niche; very few children’s magazines are designed with infants in mind.

Babybug magazine is a subscription that pays back in many a story time. Dissemble issues and file in with themes to use.

I used two rhymes from this publication this week.

Out of the box.

Boxes, Boxes by Julie Peterson

Mommy and Ned find empty boxes.
The yellow box makes a cozy bed for Whiskers.
Mommy puts books in the blue box.

This book has thicker pages that are harder for infants/toddlers to tear. There is more emphasis on the pictures than the text. The magazine also has interactive activities in the back that children can do to expand on the text and pictures.

BabyBug is a good book to have for younger children. It is like a board book so the children can touch and interact with them. They contain simple words and pictures that match them.

Baby bug is a monthly magazine for babies. It is age appropriate and can assist in proper development. Reading these magazines can help children develop reading skills and oral language skills. More than one teacher could use these if a school subscribed to the magazine.

This is such a fun magazine. I didn't even know they made stuff like this. My kids love it. I love how it is cardboard and easy for young kids to look at. I love how predictable the format is and the many different things it has. The pictures are always done so well, it is bright and keeps young kiddos eyes. I would recommended this to everyone my three year old loves it.
