I Like You Just Because: Thoughts on Friendship

Rate this book
No one can go through life without friends and still lead a normal and reasonably happy life. We need friends to maintain our peace of mind, to bolster our self-respect and to fulfill human aspirations. Friendship is not a game we play. There is a deep dimension to it that we overlook. There are demands made upon friends which are often unfulfilled. I Like You Just Because explores some of these. It explores the need we have of friends, the risk we take in developing friends, the obligations we assume and the sense of well being we experience in the give and take that friendships demand.

I read this book through my mother's old copy- she got it when she was in college.

It is a kind of book you need as you need a real friend. Nimeth's attitude in his writing is so superb and his thought on friend naturally manifested. The writing, direct, simple, yet do not lack its grandeur.

It is a perfect gift to a very special friend, or to your lover (if you think he or she is your friend, or, otherwise enemy).

Here are some of the thoughts discussed that I like:

"A friend knocks before he enters,
Not after he leaves."

"You can be lonely in a crowd."*

"You can never understand your friends words
When you can not even understand his silence."*

This is my father's copy, with a letter from my mother on the first page. I am keeping it to remind myself that they loved each other once.

This is a simple, sweet look at friendship and what is required to make and keep true friends. It is both idealistic and realistic in the points it makes. And these thoughts on friendship are accompanied by some to-the-point photos and stylized text. It makes for a lovely read and made me reflect on my friendships.
And it has a photo of a porcupine along with the line, "They bristle with ill-will," and that brought me pure joy.

I remember reading this book when I felt so alone and it really did cheer me up. This book is a masterpiece that you could just read over and over again. It's one of those "healing" kind of books that are just too rare in this world. I'm glad my mom recommended this.

I have a copy before when I was about 17 years old. The book is so innocent in form but the thoughts were really applicable as we go through life's journey

format typical of 1970s which intrigued me to buy the book. Poetry focusing on friendship and how to be a good friend.
