Her life is miserable. They beat her. Deprive her of food. Ridicule her beautiful skin. And for what? All because deep down inside they truly hate themselves. The loneliness starts to creep in, and it gets unbearable...until he decides to save her from a life of hell.
Excerpt As the wind blew softly, Alex turned a page of the book she was reading. She was sitting at the base of a tree with her legs stretched out. It was lunchtime and she had chosen to eat outside as usual.
Sometimes when she read a book, she felt herself getting lost into the story and nothing in the real world mattered anymore. Of course, she could only read in places where she was on her own because her father didn't like reading 'stupid' fantasy stories or any other stories for that matter. Funny, how he forces her to read a lot of workbooks for school, but he doesn't let her read other books for pleasure.
When she heard footsteps nearby, she glanced up but then went back to her book. It was probably some cheerleader waiting for her boyfriend.
"Hi." A smooth, gently male voice said warmly.
Alex glanced up again and saw the new kid, Michael, standing in front of her.
"Can I sit with you?" he asked, his eyes soft as he gazed at her.
"If you wish." Alex replied tonelessly, going back to her book as if nothing had disturbed her.
"As you already know, my name's Michael." He continued to smile, curiosity sparkling in the deep brown depths of his eyes. "What's yours?"
Without taking her eyes off the book, she replied, "Alex."
"So how old are you?"
Alex was silent for a long time, looking just slightly annoyed. "Sixteen."
"Oh. Me too." He laughed.
She closed the book and put it aside, taking a drink of orange juice out of the bottle.
"What happened to your cheek?" he asked, curiosity evident on his handsome features.
Alex frowned at him, confused for a moment. She winced and jerked her head away when he touched her cheek lightly with his fingertips.
I wanted to like this book. I really did and tried very hard. It has a great storyline, but the writing style severely diminishes it. There were many hit and misses. Majority of the time, the dialogue was not believable. For example, for two years this girl went to school, was around other people and not one person noticed her bruises? Also, as an abused victim, the way she spoke to her “abusers” was very unbelievable. I highly doubt she would have been able to have a boy in the house in her room, have boys calling the house, call her stepmother a bitch or to talk back to her dad. In fact, she would have been allowed to do majority of the things she did. And a lot of this occurred in the beginning of the storyline. That’s what makes the book unbelievable.
When I read, I love to become the main character; or have it acted out in my imagination like a movie playing for my personal enjoyment. Sadly, that was not the case with this book. It jumped all over the place, which was very confusing. I’ll be honest and say there were moments when I would start getting into the story, then something cringeworthy, not in a suspense or exciting kind of way, would happen and I would have to put the my kindle down for awhile. I would literally have to force myself to start reading it again.
This is my first time reading this author so I cannot speak on her other books. I’m giving the book two stars because of the great potential. I hope it can go to an editor to revamp it.
Reading the story she goes through so much mental and physical abuse. It gives off this potential to have her finally doing something about it because she meets this boy who makes her believe that not all people are bad. It gives you hope that she will finally find the courage to tell someone about it and then Nothing happens. I mean absolutely nothing happens to show her getting stronger and leaving the toxic environment of her home. She just goes to her school dance and the book ends.
I enjoyed the story, loved the characters and even felt the subject area being covered was done well. I will definitely be reading the next instalment as I'm curious as to where this will lead.
