January 2, 2020thanks to lingo mastery, I already had two other books from lingo mastery (french and spanish) and I wished there was a version for Chinese since there are not many organised context resources for teaching the most useful and functional words in Chinese.
and now here we are, this book is exactly what I needed for learning functional vocabulary in Chinese, lets be honest, learning Chinese characters is hard by itself, if we dont make ourselves familiar with words in context; it would be alot harder to remember them later. attaching feelings and function to vocabulary in our mind is what enables us to become fluent in a language and without context it would be impossible to do it.
human brain is designed to learn languages in context. as a polyglot I advise anyone who wants to learn a new language to seek as much context as possible, and whats better than an organised frequency vocabulary book like this.

The choice of phrases seems fairly arbitrary, eg "Would you like to play with my spare clubs?"
And even I (a beginner) noticed a few errors.

‘Yuè – Delight’ – a fine introduction to learning Mandarin Chinese
Once again Lingo Mastery has come to the rescue, allowing us to make Chinese more accessible to a wider population. As someone trying to learn Chinese independently (and specifically Chinese characters), this book has been a great boon and a big part (for the time being the largest part) of how I've been teaching myself. I go character by character, write it out along with several example words from Plexo (another great resource!) then copy the sentence the character appears in and try to work it out piece by piece and try to make sense of the meaning of the sentence. For the past few weeks the studying has been off and on, but I'm going to try to stay at a pace of at least 10 characters a day (we'll see how ambitious that goal ends up being!). Right now I'm at #332 which means sometime around the end of June I should have made my way to #2000 :) wish me luck!
I think this is great introductory book to learning the characters, especially if you're a fan of frequency based studying/learning. I prefer it without the pinyin for the entire sentence as it encourages me to look up and discover new characters I don't yet know, but I imagine for others it might be quite helpful to have the pinyin transliteration of the entire sentence.
I would most certainly recommend this book and wish those who take it up success in studying Chinese ^_^

As someone who wants to learn Chinese as efficiently as possible, this is an excellent resource! The biggest barrier with my Mandarin (spoken Chinese) learning was become confident enough to speak with native speakers. I found getting the low hanging fruit, like speaking basic phrases, helps build my confidence and this book helped me build confidence as beginner learning Chinese. It also allowed me to become smother in my delivery and sound much more fluent.
Each word is shown in pinyin but the phrases accompanying the word do not have pinyin. This may seem frustrating but it forces you to improve your reading skills and allows you to become less reliant in pinyin. If you cannot read any Chinese characters, you use Pleco's OCR or Google Translate to scan the characters you do not recognize and convert them to pinyin. Over time you will start being able to read the characters in the book. Once you get a basic understanding of Chinese sentence structure and tones, this is one of the best resources available to expand your vocabulary, practice your pronunciation, and improve your reading skills!

I am neither a scholar nor a language teacher. I have this book in order to help me learn a little Chinese. Living in Asia, I already know a few words but can't string them together. Although I have not completed this book, but only dipped in and out, I think it will help me with that. I will probably not spend much time time learning the characters. It's the spoken word I am interested in. Useful book.

following the "2000 most common Chinese characters in context " which I have studied and used for speaking aloud practice and also bought a second copy... this next book focuses on the writing of Hanzi HSK2 character set. Handwriting of the HSK2 strengthens the knowledge and practice for mastery. I think it's very useful to practice speaking aloud and handwriting as two essential skills and practical lessons for daily use.

I love languages and Chinese is so amazing. I really was able to glean a lot of additional information from this book although I know when learning a language it is important to hear it. I am just starting this language but this book is a great start.
