Did you know that some frogs can grow hair? There is a lizard that can run on top of water, and moth that drinks the tears of other animals. The okapi look almost like zebras with the head of a giraffe on a short neck.

This is such an informative and interesting book! Every page is filled with amazing facts and information about each animal. There are also wild destinations around the world where you can see cool and weird animals on land and in the sea. I loved reading the short bios of famous and influential animal experts. Of course I had to take some of the quizzes to find out my animal personality and my animal super-hero name.

I love the colorful photographs on every page! The photos are so vivid and full of action, they really bring the subject material to life. I like how the factoids and info are organized in bite-sized sections for easy reading.
This book would appeal to young people who are curious about the world and who love animals!

Full of information about animals and their unusual qualities and circumstances fill this fascinating book. Some spreads focus on a particular animal such as horses, dogs, orcas, star-nosed mole, and the diving bell spider. With a photograph and a couple of fun fact side comments and nerd alerts these spreads share information about a wide variety of different types of animals. There are also sections on animals with specific characteristics in common such as animals with unique noses or that are vampire-like. The FAQ sections answer questions such as do pets really have a secret life or do animals really sense bad guys? There are spreads that highlight individuals who have unique interactions with animals. And some spreads show charts that readers can engage with. For young readers who love animals and fun, browsable books that provide a wealth of information along with gorgeous designs and photographs, this is a great choice. The information is intriguing and even startling. Young readers will be eager to share the things they learn.

NERDlet: Animals looked like it would be similar to Weird but True! Halloween, which we thoroughly enjoyed. It is. Animals is a collection of animal-related facts – pretty straightforward. The scope is massive, and the book is small, which makes it ideal for perusing. Bright photographs, large print, and minimal text make it accessible for all ages. We haven't yet covered every single page, but almost everything we've read has been novel for me. With the Halloween book, we read cover-to-cover over the course of several days leading up to the holiday. We've had Animals sitting out on the coffee table or hearth for a while, and it gets picked up when the mood strikes.

T's favorite parts were the cute animals, like the axolotl, and the quizzes. We learned what type of foxes we are most like, and I'm not surprised he'd be the arctic variety since he took that quiz on a snow day (I'd be a fennec, reveling in the hot desert)! I like my animal trivia, and T likes animals and information, so this little book chock full of photos and facts is a great fit for us. (It also tickled him that it was advertised on the back of his Nat. Geo. Kids magazine!)

A word on National Geographic:
As a child, I loved browsing the National Geographic and World magazines in our home. National Geographic publications were my first stop when I needed information about the natural world or another country, even before hitting the local library. (I'm pretty sure I wrote a whole report in middle school with those as my only sources...in retrospect I should have been using a variety of sources.) Now, T reads the current Kids magazine (Thanks, Granddad!), and we often have the opportunity to review books published by the children's imprint; I'm gratified to see T entranced as I was (and still am).

I love learning about all the various animals that live in our world. This little, square book offers kids snippets of facts, amazing photography, and “nerd alert” boxes with something unique about that animal.

I find that every time I read from these children’s books, I learn something too. The okapi is built like a horse, has stripes like a zebra, and a tongue like a giraffe. The fact that they leave behind sticky, smelly markings from their feet is just another weird and “nerdy” fact that I find so interesting about this animal.

At over 200 pages, this book has to feature over 100 animals. Most of them have their own two-page spread. But, there are also pages called “Nerdsville Central” that feature a more general category of animals like the pigs on Pig Beach in the Bahamas. Some of the animals featured might be more familiar like betta fish or dolphins, but you will still learn something new about them. I found more pages of animals I didn’t know about than those that I did.

Like many other National Geographic books, you’ll find quizzes, flow charts, and FAQs to answer all your burning questions. This small book is jam-packed with all the nerdy animals facts your kid could want. I took this book to a second-grade classroom last week and the kids read it right up until the bell rang for their bus.

When our kids were younger, I gave them a book and a movie for Valentine’s Day and in their Easter baskets. This book would be perfect for either one of those occasions. Elementary-aged kids are the perfect readers for this book, but parents and older siblings could be found sneaking a peek at the pages too!

Is your kid a nerd and doesn’t like to admit it? National Geographic Kids has the perfect guide just for them. This cool book has tons of information and its not all about animals. There is stuff here your kid may know but will learn a little bit more. If your kids don’t know they will quickly learn with these pages filled with interesting little snippets and amazing photos.

In the section covering Freaky Flyers kids will see and learn about flying snakes, squirrels, bats and birds. There is a fun Unicorn section which shares wonderful photos of animals that have a very special horn similar to the imaginary unicorn. There is a horned rhinoceros, a unicorn fish, a helmeted curassow and an artic whale called a narwhal. Some bizarre looking creatures are found here as well, like the hairy frog found in Africa. It even has claws.

National Geographic always has strange, bizarre, and beautiful creatures to share. Parents and teachers can spend time with kids and learn right along with them. Fantastic photos always show these creatures in their natural habits which makes reading and learning so much fun.
