Anabeth is a sixth-grader, popular and a natural leader - until a new girl, Mindy, shows up. Mindy is really different from Anabeth's best friend Rachel and her other classmates - she talks back to adults and doesn't pay attention in class. Anabeth is flattered when she's singled out as Mindy's new best friend, even though it means shutting Rachel out. Later, when Anabeth stands up for herself she is ostracized in the same way she allowed Rachel to be. The monster-themed birthday party (complete with games in which spaghetti stands in for brains and grapes as eyeballs) stood out in my memory years later. The title refers to a sculpture on a field trip taken by the class.
