What, in the name of Satan, is that horrific glow?” “You mean the sun?

“Dark Prince” by Audrie Brice is a somehow a surprising book. A first sight a dark paranormal romance story, involving demons and witches, the book is a welcome new take on the genre, which uses ‘cozy mystery’ narrative style to bring the story across.

Amon Zoth is the Prince of Hell, heir to the throne to his just murdered father, who is caught in a fight for power with his own brother Ahriman, his father’s killer, who would stop at nothing to stop the coronation and secure the Throne of Hell from himself. Amon Zoth may have more foot soldiers, he lacks the edge magic wielders give to his brother, thus Amon Zoth jumps at the opportunity to enroll a powerful witch in his ranks: Shelby Mithras, the offspring of a renegade Nephelim and a human witch. Easy-peasy… open a portal to Shelby, explain the situation and bring her to his side.

Shelby Mithras is in fact a witch, part of a coven whose “inner circle consisted of the only members who seemed to realize that there were more than just goddesses, that ancient pagans weren’t vegan, and that is was okay to curse someone in self-defense”, but Shelby is also a cashier at the local grocery store, who really has no idea what she is putting herself into, which becomes more than apparent as she by mistake ends up face to face with Ahriman, to the fully enjoyment of the reader.

The book is a delight, that proves that dark fantasy and cozy humor are not mutually exclusive, both Shelby and Amon Zoth are out of their depth, and will have to work out their differences, while trying to resolve Hell heritage for the better good. Dark fantasy meets ‘cozy paranormal mystery/romance’ and… it works!!!

Take one very arrogant Prince of Hell, then add one feisty human witch. Throw them together into a do-or-die situation – one dire for the inhabitants of both Hell and Earth. Stand back and let the sparks fly. Then strongly suggest that they get on with the actual business of thwarting the enemy.

I really enjoyed this entertaining paranormal/fantasy romance. There’s plenty of action, sorcery, danger, conflict, drama, humour and a slow burning romance that culminates in some steam. I loved Shelby’s character – her wit, her determination and her quick-thinking. I liked her journey of discovery as she realized her full magical potential. Amon Zoth was quite amusing in his confusion over Shelby and the impact a mere mortal was having on his life. Poor demon, he never knew what hit him!

I loved Shelby’s and Amon’s story. Amon is the prince of hell he is to be king now that his younger brother killed their father and his brother is amassing an army to take the throne from Amon, one of Amon’s seers tells him that a human woman called Shelby Mithras can help defeat his brother so Amon goes to the earth plane to get this woman’s help but things don’t go as planned and Amon the prince of hell feels something that he has never felt before and that’s guilt. I loved this story it’s a fantastic read and I definitely recommend this book especially if you love demons and witches.

This is a stand alone novel as of now, though at any point should the author wish, it can be made into a saga.

Based in Acheron, a hell realm, it gives demons a whole new definition.

Very interesting, fast paced & uncomplicated, this book is a great read.

Great reading

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story! At first, I thought the plot would be silly but as soon as I met the characters, I loved it. Shelby was a great character. Plenty of sass and just as sweet. Amon Zoth was like I never could have imagined! A wonderful story. I read it in one night! I just couldn’t put it down.

I really liked this world or should I say worlds. The characters were interesting and attention grabbing. The only thing I don't like is that I feel the story was left unfinished so I really hope there is a second book.

Interesting

This was a fun read for those of us who have dark imaginations. A refreshing change from the sappy Hallmark romance.
