Ancient Egypt is a subject of endless fascination for me and for many others, but given that books on the subject are so numerous, what does this one offer that is distinctive? Two things, in my opinion, one which I liked, and one which I didn’t. The good thing about this book is the abundance of very fine illustrations: the author is also a professional photographer, and it shows. What I didn’t like is that the material is approached thematically rather than chronologically. If you can’t physically get to Egypt but would like to work your way through all the major sites with a lavishly illustrated guide, then this is the next best thing to being there in person. But if, like me, you prefer something with a more tightly organised chronological framework, then it probably isn’t for you. The three stars I give are a reflection of my own tastes, which are slightly different to the author’s.
