Never Forget: This book is the first in a two part series about life in the Canadian wilderness during the war of 1812. It connects that tumultuous time in Canadian history with the Napoleonic wars in Europe. This is one of the first books I have read that do that. It is a refreshing change to books that are very narrow in their setting. Life constantly changes and the British Empire was born of the use of the working class in Britain, the slave trade and the merchant trade using the Royal Navy and the Merchant navy to grow the wealth of a very small group of people in England. This book attempts to show the connection between that reality and the colonies. The main character Jane has an interesting history. She has healing skills which are used to help some soldiers during the war of 1812. She meets a gallant captain who loves her and leaves her. However she finds out she has titled relatives in England and decides to meet them. The book tells of her adventure crossing the Atlantic and arriving in England to a completely different culture. Well done Catherine Grove on painting a credible picture of a gallant lady who manages to navigate two very different cultures on her own terms! This a great book for Canadian and English women to read.
This is story about history, determination and opportunity. It is beautifully written in the first person. You quickly get to know the person and understand her character and challenges and her desires. Very entertaining as well as informative.
