Her job was simple. Kyra didn’t expect any complications until the mayor of Snowbury caught her eye. Lost in the storm of attraction, Kyra struggles to finish her job of gathering information to convict a cartel leader’s son and bring a mob boss down.
Claudia is the mayor of Snowbury, and she knows something is going down. However, she’s surprised to find that her town is a coveted stop for drug traffickers, and Kyra knows more than she’s telling.
Claudia is willing to play games with the wily coyote if it’ll get her answers. But the unexpected happens, and Claudia ends up not only sleeping with the probable enemy but falling hard for Kyra. As she sorts out friend from foe, Claudia becomes certain of two things, she wants Kyra in her life and when the smoke clears, the enemy will be in ashes.

When I made predictions of who would be coming for Kyra, I made the prediction of Brynn or Delaney. They were the two most prominent. Who I didn’t think about was Claudia. She made a few appearances at the Coalition backing Sam. I didn’t think too much on her except as an ally that would become important for Sam and Mallory.
Well, I am glad it was Claudia. I loved the personality of Claudia. And I felt she was due her moment in the sun. She was one tough alpha. She also had a slightly cooler head than Sam. Which speaking of Sam, I continue to like her less and less as the series goes on. Perhaps she was always an asshole and I just didn’t see it as much since the first book was about her. She’s too much and her mate seems too little.
Anyway, I was curious as to why Claudia was enthralled by Velvet/Kyra. I liked Kyra, but she fatigued me with her withholding of information that could have prevented a lot of what happened or at least allowed them to maybe spare some of the bloodshed and see what was the true undercurrent happening to the town. Maybe it was the passage needed to be taken to obliterate the Coalition? I liked the courtship of the two most of the time. I think the Mayor played less games with her feelings and her intentions. I guess when you’re as broken as Kyra, that could be hard to see, feel and believe. I am glad they were able to figure it out.
The books follow the same pattern. A dancer blows into town either running or infiltrating from something horrific. That trouble follows them to town or is already there. One of the dominants sees them dance and that starts the initial attraction. The dancers are always some type of shadow walker with gifted abilities. Sam challenged each one. Lol The mating dance starts. The distrust is crazy and annoying. Then finally they get their mate of a lifetime. Same premise but each story has its own tale and some are just better than others.
Claudia surprised me. I didn’t see it coming, but I kept hearing about especially in the second book about Sydney and Cambridge. There were references from Sydney and about the female dominant hyenas. It sort of opened the door. And all I could think about was a comparison to Bali and the “Midnight Jewel Series” and how life can be living like that. I do believe Kyra could get pregnant.
The ending could have been better, but maybe not necessary. These stories usually continue into the next installment. I wonder who is next? There is still Brynn. But now there is Dylan. Will Delaney make a comeback to the series? The three Shadow alphas are mated. I can’t seem to pick who the next “damsel” will be. I shall know soon. :)
So far I like the whole series, but Claudia is intersex and I found that very interesting and something different. Kyra's actions and skills are similar to those of other shifters, but also differ due to their rare breed. But that's always an issue in the other books too. If you like sexy shifters with mild action, this might be of interest to you. That’s the best book so far…
3.5 stars. The way the coalition decides and rules doesn't make any sense at all. Not even in fantasy world. Jenner is portrayed as a blind idiot, both as person and cop. I thought - based on previous relationship -, that he at least has some common sense,so him, turning out the way he is, is a big disappointment in storytelling.
Aside from the third book (which i really disliked and found wildly problematic), I've really enjoyed this series overall. However, with the introduction of a dozen or so new 'bad guys', the story has become so convoluted and weighed down with conflicting motives and machinations that i am having a very difficult time following them all. Trying to keep track of who's who and how they are related, let alone which ones are part of which alliances and schemes is all but impossible without keeping a very extensive chart. Complicating the issue is the fact that we've heard mention of several of the packs of various animals which reside in the area including Mystic, Snowbury and Hartford but have never really had a full rundown of how extensive the territory is, where the packs lie in relation to one another etc. A map and full list of packs, their alphas, and their loyalties would go a long way to clear things up.... At the end of this book, without giving away too much, I'm unclear who's still around at all?? Anyhow, I hope the next book is a lot tighter and starts resolving some of the chaos instead of adding to it....
