MOØDe, by leading international photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn, presents images from his extensive oeuvre in which he explores the crossover – in the broadest sense of the word – between photography and the world of fashion.

Corbijn’s portraits of famous figures including Alexander McQueen, Tom Waits, Kate Moss, Björk and Clint Eastwood have achieved iconic status. As visual director for Depeche Mode and through his decades-long collaboration with U2 and other musicians, he has left an indelible stamp on how we look at a crucial aspect of contemporary culture. With MOØDe, Anton Corbijn shows that fashion is everywhere.

This publication features more than 150 images and collaborations from Corbijn’s rich body of work, many of them never seen before.

About the author

Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer, filmmaker, and video artist. He is best known for his black-and-white portraits of artists shot with slow shutter speeds to allow for the subtle movements and gestures of his subjects. “I feel the imperfection is much closer to how life is than perfection,” the artist has said.

Born Anton Johannes Gerrit Corbijn van Willenswaard on May 20, 1955 in Strijen, Netherlands, Corbijn began shooting local bands at the age 17, before moving to London to work for NME magazine as a staff photographer. He has directed over 80 music videos for a number of musicians, including Nirvana, U2, Depeche Mode, and Joy Division. In 2015, the artist was the subject of the exhibition “Anton Corbijn 1-2-3-4” at the Fotomuseum Den Haag, which included over 300 of his most iconic images. Living and working in The Hague, Netherlands, Corbijn is currently focused on feature-length films.

This is one of my favourites, a book of Anton Corbijn and his fashion photography. Let it get through to you and you still don't know what to expect, at least I didn't. The first pages will get you off the wrong foot, photos for fashion brands like Guess and Louis Vuitton. But then we get all these great shots of actors, artists and other celebrities in a way only Anton can present them. You think you know these people, but then again, it's like you don't know them. Every page made such an impact, I had to stare at them longer as I would normally do. Even such a simple thing like putting a moustache on Paul McCartney resulted in something intriguing. As Anton puts it himself "I photograph mostly personalities, but fashion is more and more part of it. We all make a decision in the morning about what to wear, even if it is just a hat or a black T-shirt. Fashion is not always spelled out in capital letters." So great to see that not every photo is in high contrast black and white, but even his use of colours is iconic Anton Corbijn.
