I absolutely loved this book. It has helped me to draw closer to the church and strengthen my faith. This is an amazing read for anyone who seeks to build their own testimony and draw closer to God. The smooth combination of scriptures and personal anecdotes was superb. I would also recommend that it be gifted to close friends who need peace and brightness during these dark times
This is a treatise on Christian discipleship by Dr. Joseph Q. Jarvis, a medical doctor and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It feels like his testament to the world about how to seek, find, and follow the Savior in the richest possible way, the demands it places upon those who do so, and consequently what it can make of them.
As someone who has often reflected on and haltingly but unyieldingly pursued this same course, however poorly, I found myself drawn to not just what Dr. Jarvis chooses to share in this book, but also the way he shares it—his words, analogies, scriptural passage quotes, historical anecdotes, and more. Dr Jarvis sees the world of following Christ in a way and using a language that is not just sympathetic with but also aspirational to mine.
I find Jarvis’ insights resonant for one who has spent a lifetime trying to understand and live the teachings of Jesus Christ. He is erudite and accessible. In many ways, this is a book I would have liked to have written.
He talks about discipleship in a way that makes sense to me—a lifelong process that demands whole-soul commitment that changes us day by day into the manner and shape of Christ.
Jarvis writes in the tradition of a hero of mine, Neal A. Maxwell, and brings a fresh way to describe principles that are often taught with the same familiar language and thus become a little too familiar to inspire the truths they represent. Jarvis infuses vitality into these beloved Gospel doctrines.
I would commend this short book to all who look to understand the promise of discipleship through the lens of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To those who are unfamiliar with the Restoration it will be intriguing. To all who yearn to follow the Savior in this modern, fallen world, it will feel like a sympathetic conversation with a wise friend and diligent fellow traveler.
It was not what I at first thought it was going to be, however it was interesting to read a different religious (religion’s) perspective on the fundamentals of life.
This book examines what it means to liven your life with an eye single to something—whether it be God or more worldly pursuits. I loved the author’s insight on discipleship, scriptures, and the impact they had on Joseph Smith and those around him. This book identified several scriptural comparisons that I hadn't considered before, which I'm looking forward to researching further. I'm also grateful for those moments Dr. Jarvis opened the reader up to his personal life and how it helped him to see the world through new eyes. I especially loved the examples from his work as a doctor as well as an expert witness in court cases.
The further I read this book, the more I understood how my perceptions and actions can greatly change by modifying the questions I ask. Instead of asking, "Why did this happen to me?" I could ask instead, "What can I learn from this experience to sanctify me? Overall, "What the Single Eye Sees" was well thought out, well written with loads of supporting references both secular and religious, and very thought-provoking. It was an enjoyable read that allowed me to re-evaluate my views on life, death, challenges, and tragedies. Very well done.
"What the Single Eye Sees" by Joseph Q. Jarvis was a very inspiring book. I really loved his insight into faith, hope, and charity. I like how he focuses on how we all need hope in our lives. I recommend this book to anyone looking to feel closer to Christ and to have hope in a difficult world.
Good book about discipleship from an author previously unknown to me. He blends a masterful knowledge of the scriptures with history, sociology, contemporary authors, and poetry to weave an inspiring discourse.
What the Single Eye Sees by Joseph Q. Jarvis is kind of intense--in a good way. There is so much good information about the gospel of Jesus Christ and truly seeing it. Dr Jarvis takes the things we hear about all the time in church, and explains in depth what they really mean and how that applies to you. You won't read this all at the same time, its more of a study as you go book, read a little each day and then ponder what you have read.
