This book has a lot of fantasy elements at their best--unique, original, and intriguing. There were numerous fantasy creatures and landscapes that were imaginative and richly described. I wish some of them had had even more "screen time", and I think a tad more world-building would have made this creative, immersive fantasy world even better, but it was delightful to read as is.
As for the story itself, it definitely took some unique twists and turns that I was not expecting. For the first half of the book, I felt I knew exactly where it was going. However, as I got closer to the end, there were plot twists I had not predicted. Overall the ending was superb. The last several chapters felt like excitedly unwrapping layer after layer of paper to get to the prize.
Without giving away any spoilers, I'll content myself with saying that the Christian message of the book is very nicely executed. I will admit that stories of this nature are sometimes wasted on me, and I feel like they're too sappy or happily-ever-after, but that was not the case here. It was inspiring and uplifting to read, and a beautiful portrayal of heart wrenching pain turned into joy and strength.
