The story of the Culper Ring wasn't always as well-known as it is now, which was due to much of the information about it being classified for a long time. It wasn't until the 20th century that the public gained insight into the existence and activities of this spy network. Since then, the Culper Ring has been the object of scholarly study and discussion, especially in the US. In time, we've learned about the ring's founders, the context of its emergence, its key operatives, methods, and successes. This is a story that weaves its way through a relatively short but decisive period in American history. Behind the main events and the history that everyone is familiar with, the story of the Culper Ring is like a seldom-told chapter that serves as an important piece of the puzzle, regardless of how it might often be overlooked. That is, however, the story that this book will recount in a concise manner so that you can remind yourself of the revolutionary heroes that went unsung for a long time.
Knowledge of the enemy is everything whether in battle or business. This book is a nice overview of the spies and other players in the Revolutionary War. I liked the discussion of the number codes used in place of names and locations as well as the explanation of how the various members were recruited to the ring. It was interesting to me that George Washington did not actually know who most of the spies were since they worked together so well. I liked that this included a small section about the part that women played. Overall, the book is short enough that it moved quickly and kept me interested throughout.

I have to admire the men and women who worked in it doing what they could for their country knowing that there would be no real award and only danger. Benjamin Tallmadge was a true spy master and was able to recruit the right people to do the job. While I wish there was more details, I quite understand that these people lived under secrecy to save their lives and just because the war was over, I don't think the danger for them was.
What an interesting and entertaining book about a moment in history. Good facts and information about the Culpepper Ring. Good book for any history buff.
