Immortal: Last Call

Rate this book
“I’m something like sixty-thousand years old, and I’ve probably thought more about my own death than any living being has thought about any subject, ever. I used to be unduly preoccupied with what might constitute a “good death”, although interestingly, this has always been an after-the-fact analysis. What I mean is, following a near-death experience, I’ll generally perform a quiet review of the circumstances and judge whether that death would have been objectively good, by whatever metric one uses for that kind of thing. I’m not nearly that self-reflective while in the midst of said near-death experience. Facing death, the predominant thought is always not like this.” A disease threatening the lives of everyone—human and non-human—has been loosed upon the world, by an arch-enemy Adam didn’t even know he had. That’s just the first of his problems. Adam’s also in jail, facing multiple counts of murder, at least a few of which are accurate. He may never see the inside of a courtroom, because there remains a bounty on his head—put there by the aforementioned arch-enemy—that someone is bound to try to collect while he’s stuck behind bars. Meanwhile, Adam’s sitting on some tantalizing evidence that there might be a cure, but to find it, he’s going to have to get out of jail, get out of the country, and track down the man responsible. He can’t do any of that alone, but he also can’t rely on any of his non-human friends for help, not when they’re all getting sick. What he needs is a particularly gifted human, who can do things no other human is capable of. He knows one such person. He calls himself a fixer, and he’s Adam’s—and possibly the world’s—last hope. That’s provided he believes any of it. Last Call is the sixth book in the Immortal Novel Series, and also the end of a long journey for one immortal man.

About the author

Gene Doucette

Gene Doucette is a hybrid author, albeit in a somewhat roundabout way. From 2010 through 2014, Gene published four full-length novels (Immortal, Hellenic Immortal, Fixer, and Immortal at the Edge of the World) with a small indie publisher. Then, in 2014, Gene started self-publishing novellas that were set in the same universe as the Immortal series, at which point he was a hybrid.

When the novellas proved more lucrative than the novels, Gene tried self-publishing a full novel, The Spaceship Next Door, in 2015. This went well. So well, that in 2016, Gene reacquired the rights to the earlier four novels from the publisher, and re-released them, at which point he wasn’t a hybrid any longer.

Additional self-published novels followed: Immortal and the Island of Impossible Things (2016); Unfiction (2017); and The Frequency of Aliens (2017).

In 2018, John Joseph Adams Books (an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) acquired the rights to The Spaceship Next Door. The reprint was published in September of that year, at which point Gene was once again a hybrid author.

Since then, a number of things have happened. Gene published two more novels—Immortal From Hell at the end of 2018, and Fixer Redux in 2019—and wrote a new novel called The Apocalypse Seven that he did not self-publish; it was acquired by JJA/HMH in September of 2019. Publication date is May 25, 2021.

Gene plans to continue writing novels for both markets (traditional and self-published) as long as that continues to make sense. His most recent self-published novel is Immortal: Last Call (2020). He is currently at work on a large science fiction world-building project taking place on his Patreon site, the result of which will be a multi-novel series.

Although I could read many more Immortal books, I appreciate it when a series goes out on a high note. This was an excellent conclusion to a fantastic series.

Immortal: Last Call (The Immortal Series Book 6) by Gene Doucette

Please give my Amazon review a helpful vote - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Learn25&am...

This seems to be the end of the Immortal series. We see author Gene Doucette ravel up the threads that have been spun out since the first book when 60,000-year-old Adam decided to sober up and deal with the life around him. As we've watched him deal with problems, and then discovered in the last book that there was an overriding conspiracy behind it all, we've seen Adam renew his acquaintance with people from his past and species that are impossible.

In this book, Adam is trying to save the "impossible things" from a killer epidemic and take revenge on the other immortal man whom he didn't know was his immortal nemesis. Adam is almost out of gas. He's gotten rid of his wealth. He's under arrest. And, he's in Chicago.

But people we've met in past books show up at the right to lend a hand. In addition, Adam reaches out for help from Corrigan Baines - the hero of Doucette's "Fixer" series - for Baines' help. It seems that Baines is from a family that can "see" slightly into the future. This is something that can be very useful if you are trying to stay alive when assassins are trying to kill you.

This is a fun book. Adam is an amusing character and his observations about his past are always engaging.

This may not be the last we see of Adam. Doucette can start a new series if he wants. There are also the novellas that cover different episodes from Adam's life, which Doucette can expand upon for the sake of his fans.

A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:

I didn't realize how much I missed Adam (and how pissed off I was how the last book ended). This is, hopefully, Adam's last adventure, and as such, there are some fun elements brought in to wrap things up.

First, I'm not usually a fan of crossovers, but the author brought in the "Fixer" in a fun way, diving into Corrigan's family history. Of course Eve needs to be a part of this and she plays a better role than she has up until this point. Also, the list of old acquaintances and friends that make an appearance is long, but that's sort of how a farewell tour should be.

The reason I didn't give this sixth book five stars is that the last chunk of the book has a lot of "explanational asides" as the characters (usually Adam) explain how things happened between plot points. I get it, there was too much ground to cover to wrap it all up, but at times it does get a bit monotonous.

But overall, I loved the Immortal series and felt like this was a great ending to it all. There was a bit of wiggle room at the end if the author wanted to continue the series, but please just let it end here. There are other series to write!

Of course if you've read the series this far, you're going to read this one. But if you haven't even started this adventure yet, go grab the first book and...

Read it!

Best of the Series
September 09, 2021

Gene Doucette's 2020 novel [[ISBN:9781953637055 "Immortal, Book 6: Immortal: Last Call"]] is very probably the best book in the series. Unlike the previous books, in this one, Adam knows what's happening, knows what he has to do, and just gets on with it. So, it's more "action-ish" than "head-scratching-ish." It also has a far more satisfying ending than the previous book did. Plus, Doucette ties it nicely into his "Fixer" series of books (which is an interesting juxtaposition). I've got a few minor nits with the book, but they're mostly preference-types of things. So, I'm happy to rate the book at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5.

Great series!

Gene Doucette has become one of my favorite authors. The Immortal series is entertaining and contains a certain amount of snark that really appeals to me. I don’t recall if this is the last book in the series but hope it isn’t. Whenever you’re dealing with a character like Adam, a 50,000+ year old immortal, humor has to be part of the equation. The fact that Adam spent much of time walking about the earth as a staggering drunk hunter/gatherer/farmer adds to his appeal in my opinion. Of course there are a lot of other things he’s done and he has an interesting set of nonhuman friends to keep things interesting. Overall if you’re looking for some light and fun reading you might want to try this series.

This is one of my favorite book series and I've enjoyed all six books plus the short stories and novella. There were a surprising number of grammatical errors in the book but I didn't let that affect my rating of this book.

The book (and series) is witty and humorous and a fun adventure though I did find the ending of this story to be a bit anti-climatic. Though I believe the author has stated that this will be the last book in the series the ending did leave room for further stories. You really need to read the previous books in this series to enjoy this one and it wouldn't hurt to read 'Fixer' as well.

Most excellent finish

It has been a very interesting journey with Adam. The books always gives you two stories, the main line and stories of his past that are relevant. I am sure that historians around the world must have had a special chuckle many many times along the way.
Read this book. Read the entire series. You'll not b sorry that you did. I think that I'll wait a few weeks and then read it again to savour the journey now that I know how it turns out.
Bring on number seven, please.

A very well crafted conclusion... maybe

In this installment Adam finds himself 2 or more steps behind the guy who seems to want to kill him. In addition this same guy has released a pandemic on the supernatural world. So, in addition to staying alive he has to find this guy to get the cure because his girlfriend has contracted the disease... Good luck in following all the twists and turns in this one...

I think, aside from the very first book in this series, this one was the best. What a fine way to wrap up the series, which has had so many memorable characters. The Immortals: Adam and Eve (not the ones in the Bible), Iza the pixie, Eloise the Vampire, Mike Lycos the Werewolf, Mirella the Goblin, the list goes on and on. I will miss them, but I won't miss Gene Doucette, since I've just begun his Fixer series.

All good things must come to an end.... until there's another one.

I don't like that this may be the last Immortal story, but I liked the way it wrapped up Adam's quest...and a lot of loose ends that I didn't even see coming. What a great tale about his journey!
...and now it's 1AM and I think I'll go pour a toast to Adam, to Gene, and try to figure out what to read next. Enjoy the Immortal series!

I'm at the point in this series where the plot is secondary to the characters. I almost don't care what happens in the story, I simply yearn to catch up with one of my favorite people, Adam. He's so detached from worrying about himself but, at the same time, he cares deeply for his friends. Also, I love the snippets of history that emerge as he tells his story.

I'm sorry it took so long for me to get around to reading this one.

I think this is the last in the series and it was a great read. Got a bit weird in the last book but this one was a bit more ‘normal’. I liked the main character and how he sees the world as he lived it and it makes more sense as quite practical with no embellishments. It’s this that makes the series. Fun read.

Not bad...A good continuation of the story with some threads resolved and some others advanced...I'm very curious about the next book :) I'm hoping it will be a bit more similar to the first two in nature :)
