About the author

Lalgudi Saptarishi Ramamrutham was a veteran Tamil novelist, having authored 300 short stories, 6 novels and 10 collections of essays.

Born in 1916, he was a native of Lalgudi and one of the writers of the Manikodi era. He started writing when he was 20 originally in English and then changed over to Tamil. He worked in Punjab National Bank for 30 years and settled down in Chennai after his retirement.
La.Sa.Ra. worked for three years as a typist in Vauhini Pictures, which then produced a series of landmark Telugu films like "Vande Mataram", "Sumangali", and "Devata". It was then K. Ramnoth, another South Indian movie director, told La.Sa.Ra. not to waste his gift indicating that his hoping for a career in films would not be salutary. He ultimately became a banker but he continued with his writing.

He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989 for Chintha nathi, a collection of autobiographical essays.

இந்த புத்தகத்தை நானும் இரண்டு வாரத்திற்கு மேல் படித்து கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். முடிந்தபாடில்லை. ஏன்?

புத்தகம் சுவாரஸ்யமாய் இல்லையா? மாறாக மிக சுவாரஸ்யமாய், புது பாணியாய் இருந்தது. பிறகு ஏன்?

லா ச ரா தனது அனுபவங்களை பகிர்ந்த பொழுது மிக வேகமாய் பக்கங்கள் புரண்டது. அவர் தன் ஆழ் மன எண்ண அலைகளை, எண்ணியது எண்ணியபடி வார்த்தைகளாய் வடித்த பொழுது, என்னால் தொடர்ந்து படிக்க முடியவில்லை. என்னுள் ஏதேதோ எண்ண அலைகள், எண்ணங்களை ஆராய்ந்தபடி என் மனம், ஏதோ ஒரு ஏக்கம், ஆன்மாவை உலுக்கி விட்ட மாதிரி ஒரு உணர்வு. என் கவனம் புத்தகத்துக்கு திரும்ப வெகு நேரம்.

லா ச ராவின் எழுத்து பாணி மிக தனித்துவம் வாய்ந்தது. அவரது எண்ண ஓட்டங்கள் அதைவிட.

நூற்றுக்கும் குறைவில்லாத வார்த்தைகளை முதல் முறையாக படித்தேன். இலக்கிய தமிழ் என்று சொல்ல முடியாது. அது லா ச ராவின் தமிழ். நான் ஆகிவிட்டேன் அவரது எழுத்துக்களின் விசிறியாய்.

"இவை என் எழுத்துப் பிரயாசையில் நான் கோர்த்த ஜோடனைகள் அல்ல. தற்செயலில் செவியில் பட்டு, நினைவில் தைத்து, தைத்த இடத்தில் தங்கி, 'விண், விண், விண்...' குளவிகள்"

A little reader observation - Whenever as a reader, I read the written words, my brain projects it into the character and the voice you hear it in is a variant of your own. This book stands out since even when you read it out loud, your brain refuses to make any claims to the words which it knows it can never match as yours. The book is life, soul and spirit La.Sa.Ra.

The vignettes from the life of La.Sa.Ra, his tangential takes and view points, his meandering chapters and an arrogance which is naked in the words - you cannot love this man. As he claims he is a 'Sol Upasakar' (Oracle of the written word?) his words landing and playing with the spaces on the page. The clarity, the reverberations in each and every chapter is unmistakable and final.

By the time you are done with the book, you are not sure you know La.Sa.Ra the person, but you do know about the people he writes about - about Bhagavandas, Anna (his father), his mother. He goes to great depths to establish them in the minds of the reader and at times leave them as lumps in your throat. The chapters around deaths of people were morose.

It took me a long time to finish the book but I did not want it to end. I had goosebumps reading the tamil at multiple places - the sounds vibrating in your innermost depths of being. To be honest, there were words I did not even understand reading them again and again to make sense, but that just added to the resonance. You know how you can lose yourself in the music even if the song is in some other language. This is similar and I can't express it in words.

I started it as a BR with Kavitha and Prem - but thanks to my poor multitasking, I am the last man standing. Special thanks to Vimal for recommending the book to me.

The book initially gives a startling effect and progresses as a serene flow.

The work reminds of Rumi's quote "When you do things from your soul, you feel a river in you, A Joy".
It really is a soulful work.
Some chapters are so deep that I felt like a novice. Maybe a few years later I could understand them(as said by La.Sa.Ra. in Chapter 41_ பாஷைக்குள் பாஷை)
It's definitely a re-read and that's in a single sit.

1989ல் லா சா ரா என்று அழைக்கப்படும் லால்குடி சப்தரிஷி ராமாமிர்தம் அவர்களுக்கு சாகித்திய அகாதமி விருது பெற்றுத்தந்த, நாட்டுரிமையாக்கப்பட்ட சுயசரிதை கட்டுரைகள் தொகுப்பு தான் இந்த சிந்தா நதி.

80 களில் தினமணி கதிரில் தொடர்கதையாக வந்த கட்டுரைகளின் தொகுப்பு தான் இந்த புத்தகம்.

பொதுவாக தமிழ்ப் புத்தகங்களில் ஆங்கில வார்த்தைக்கலப்பு இருந்தால் அதை வெறுக்கும் எனக்கு ஏனோ இந்த புத்தகத்தில் அதை ரசிக்கவே தோன்றியது. ஒரு வேளை அது தோழி விமலா தேவி அதை உச்சரித்த விதமோ, இல்லை 80 களின் அக்கிரகாரத்தை, வாழ்க்கை முறையை எட்டிப்பார்க்க முடிந்தது என்ற கிளாசிக் புத்தக உணர்வா, இல்லை ஆங்கிலத்தை தமிழலளவு விரும்பாத என் அம்மா எப்போதாவது சில ஆங்கில வார்த்தைகளை அழகாய் பேசும் போது, எப்படி என்று கேட்டால் 80களில் அவர் வாசித்த தொடர்கதைகளில் வரும் வார்த்தைகள் அவை என்று கூறுவதன் நினைவா ஏதென்று அறியாமல் என் இதய அரையில் நிறைந்து வழிகிறது இந்த சிந்தா நதி.

"புழுவின் முதுகு வெடித்து பட்டாம்பூச்சி" என்பது போன்ற உவமைகள் அழகு. 'நேர்த்தியின் நியதிகள் 'எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த கட்டுரை.

ஆனால் என் மனதில் என்றும் நீங்காத இடம்பிடிக்கப்போகும் வார்த்தைகள் இவை தான்,

"அம்மா என்றால் ஒரு அம்மா தான்.. உன் அம்மா, என் அம்மா, தனித்தனி அம்மாக்கள் கிடையாது.ஒரே அம்மா."
