The Way Out

Rate this book
Chase Bond and Carly Richter never dreamed their jobs as Deputy U.S. Marshals would be marred by sex scandals, broken marriages, and lost fugitives. Now their tarnished reputations have earned them the unglamorous job of protecting the Chief Justice of the United States during his summer in London. Both of them knew the demotion would be boring. But neither of them knew it would be so deadly.

In the nation’s capital, President Charles Windham is in the fight of his political life. When he decides to take away Americans’ Second Amendment rights, he pulls out all the stops by ignoring the Constitution and bribing a Supreme Court Justice. But his plan is beginning to unravel. With his upcoming impeachment trial and possible removal from office, the President comes to the very deadly conclusion that there is only one way out—make sure the Chief Justice never makes it back to Washington.

With the rule of law and the good of the country at stake, Bond and Richter race to keep the Chief Justice out of the crosshairs of the most powerful man in the world.

Rob Shumaker proved to be a stellar thriller writer when I devoured his political series. I hoped this standalone would be just as impressive, filled its just as much political machinations. Shumaker does not disappoint with a story that mixes politics and a stunning race for justice. President Charles Windham does all he can to ensure a favourable result in a high-profile Supreme Court case. However, things do not go as planned and some of his financial incentives end up as front-page news. When Congress decides to impeach him, he will have to face trial in the Senate...unless the Chief Justice cannot preside. IN an effort to stymie his critics and the constitutional process, President Windham and his cronies concoct a plan to ensure impeachment never takes place in this political thriller. Shumaker weaves quite the tale and keeps the reader on their toes.

The life of US Marshals could not be more exciting for Chase Bond and Carly Richter. However, personal and professional scandals keep them shelved for punitive reasons and the Atlanta Field Office no longer wants anything to do with them. They are shipped to DC, where their assignment is one of the least exciting on paper. They are to protect the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court during his summer lecturing in the United Kingdom. With something being better than nothing, both Bond and Richter accept the job and prepare for a summer of rain and boredom.

Meanwhile, politics in Washington is heating up. President Charles Windham has a case going before the Supreme Court in which the Second Amendment is being assessed. In order to ensure the case goes his way, the president makes sure a few Associate Justices see things his way with some fiduciary incentive. Unbeknownst to the president, someone has ideas of their own and the case falls flat. News of the bribes reaches the press and the House of Representatives does not hesitate to act, sending Articles of Impeachment to the Senate for the trial. In up to his neck, President Windham needs an out. He turns to the US Constitution to find one, which might mean pulling a few levers to ensure he is never tried by the Senate.

With Deputy Marshals Bond and Richter in London alongside their protected, they are enjoying some quiet times. All this changes when someone tries to strike out and kill the Chief Justice. They realise the hot water they are in and that the impeachment trial hangs in the balance if the Chief Justice cannot make it back to preside, as is directed in the US Constitution. Now, they must protect the Chief Justice and ensure he can make it back to DC before he’s killed. All the while, a president hopes that his connections in the underworld can come through and save his presidency. A chilling story that keeps the reader hooked to every page, as Rob Shumaker shows his mettle.

A strong story must have a clear pathway for the reader to follow. Rob Shumaker does that with this well-paced novel. The narrative builds from the opening chapters, providing the reader with a foundation on which the rest builds. Alternating locations and perspectives, Shumaker develops a strong political story and tosses in a few ideas to keep the reader intrigued. Characters emerge from all sides and the various faces make their mark, keeping the reader entertained as they wait to see how it all plays out.

Plot points fuel this thriller, tossing twists and turns where the reader might least expect them. This constant change provides a story that grips the reader from the opening pages until all is revealed. Politics has a way of staying mysterious and Shumaker ensures this is the case. While a standalone, the story is one that could be expanded into something series related. I enjoyed the parallels and differences with this piece and the Capital series, which had me hooked during a recent binge reading.

Kudos Mr. Shumaker, for another winning novel!
