Nothing Ventured: An Angel Drake Short Story of Mystery & Mayhem

Rate this book
Angel has a date with a YouTube star. It’s the crush of her school days, Danny Rush, who perfected being both super cool and insanely hot aged fifteen, then never looked back. Quite frankly, she can’t believe her luck. Angel’s mother is less enthralled. The wiles of a YouTuber mean nothing to a technophobe still having trouble with email. No, she’s more impressed by ‘proper jobs’ , and to that end lines Angel up an unwanted interview, coincidentally, with another old school chum. Angel’s well out of her comfort zone now and, just to make life a little weirder, finds personal items start to go missing, whilst gloating video messages arrive from a thief enigmatically calling himself The Blue Flash. She was trying to grow up and move on, but Angel is sucked back into the relationships of her childhood, where adult versions of old friends aren’t quite what they seemed, and The Blue Flash plots to steal from her the most precious possession of all. - This SHORT STORY is with Angel Drake, heroine of the International Amazon Category Bestseller, ANGEL DRAKE IS GOING SOLO. Reader comments for Nothing Ventured ‘… the opening pages were some of the best I've ever read.’ – Amazon Vine Voice *** ’an enjoyable romp’. - Amazon Vine Voice *** ’This may be a short story, but it packs a punch.’ *** ’Loved the first Angel Drake novel, and it was great to spend more time with the character in this shorter adventure.’

Sharn Hutton scuttled along in the rat race with everyone else, until the advent of babies provided an excellent excuse not to go back to the office. Before too long she realised, however, that 'giving up work' wasn't really that at all. In fact, career motherhood had just as many challenges and disappointments as the corporate world, the hours were longer and the pay was rubbish! The best laid plans and all that…

Time marched on and as the children spent more hours at nursery and then school, she started to write during stolen moments. The seed of a story took hold and eventually grew into her first novel.

Now working from home in Hertfordshire, she wouldn’t trade her tiny writing room at the back of the house for the fanciest of corner offices. Apart from anything else, where would the dog’s bed go?

‘It’s Killing Jerry’ is her debut novel and she’s expecting many more to come. (Books that is, not babies. Definitely not babies.)

A good read. Bit of a slow starter but I really enjoyed it in the end. I liked Angel's character. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. 4*.

Read just for the first chapter if nothing else.

A quick coffee break read. Not tremendous but readable. I must admit that the opening pages were some of the best I've ever read. Who is this heartless killer? Had a chuckle when I read the explanation.
She's drifted from job to job but is quite happy working at the florist shop were she can take her troublesome chihuahua. An escape artist of 'international' fame. Her mother however wants her to get a 'proper' job and has lined up an interview with the manager of the local building society. She remembers him as the 'Boffin. Not as cool as Drake with his YouTube followers, his blue hair, and his panache for being 'down with the kids' . However the job is boring and someone has spoken her mother's smalls (okay they're not that small) off her washing line and set up a new YouTube with a man dancing in them. She cannot see the face but when her chihuahua gets dognapped she finally has an address. Can she get in without being spotted? Will she find out who is the washing line thief and get her dog back? Will she go back to the job she had at the florists?

This was a fun short(ish) story featuring Angel Drake, who proves to be a fun character.
It took a couple of pages to figure out what was actually happening (and that was intentional on the writer's part!) but once I'd worked it out it was a fun romp, with lively characters and situations.
I've already read Angel Drake Goes Solo, and would be very happy to read more about this character.
Angel isn't exactly career-driven, so when her mother takes the opportunity to fix her up with a bank job she's a little wary, but when her mother's underwear starts going missing she is dragged into a mystery to solve.

Angel is working in a forest, and can't believe her luck when the school heartthrob and YouTube star wants to date her. Life is great. Her parents aren't as happy and want her to get a 'proper' job.
When things start to go missing, from her mum's underwear to her beloved dog, Angel needs to investigate further.
A fun short story, great for the holidays.

You had me at .... Mom’s underwear was stolen! Great story to introduce Angel Drake. The book is hilarious as we are dying to see who in the world is stealing Mom’s underwear and more importantly.... why???
The male leads are interesting and repulsive.... very entertaining reading. I can’t wait to read more in this series.

This short story is a fun series of escapades of Angel Drake. It can serve as an introduction to the character who also appears in a full length book. It was an enjoyable romp and the character has great possibilities. Be aware that the last 8% of this is the first chapter of the next.

Angel is a screw up. And seems to attract other screwed up people into her life. This makes for some unbelievably odd encounters. Don't take it too seriously!
