The sequel to City of Angels finds Kit Shannon thrown into a maelstrom of hatred when she is involved in a court case that boils with racial hostility, as she struggles to know God's will both in the courtroom and in her own life. Original.
Tracie Peterson is a bestselling author who writes in both historical and contemporary genres. Her novels reveal her love for research as well as her strong desire to develop emotionally meaningful characters and stories for her readers. Tracie and her family live in Montana.
. Kit Shannon's next case in volume two involves a man that crossed racial lines. This story portrayed how basic rights were nonexistent for the lower classes, clearly reflecting how much prejudice and hatred ruled. You also discover just how far the legal field has changed since then. The elite in the social ladder ruled with prejudice and their extreme hostility seems so preposterous.
This series provides compelling entertainment, accurate historical facts, and spotlights many injustices of the times, along with detailed courtroom drama, based in the early 1900s in California. It is a time of great changes in the world, many positive and some negative. Fascinating things were happening, which allowed Kit Shannon, a female, to actually stand up in her world, for those who needed legal assistance, which had blatantly been a men's world up to that point.
I found myself cheering for the courageous heroine, who was almost always looked down upon because she was a woman, working in a man's world. I am personally beyond grateful that I did not live in that era. The prejudice behavior was much, much worse then. but it should have evolved in more improvement than it has.
Thankfully, this heroine found a tremendous mentor, a rare man, that provided guidance as he encouraged her to follow her dream as a lawyer. She breaks out on her own in this installment. I was beyond thrilled when her tenacious efforts assisted her in overcoming obstacles. Her determination to to help others combined with her faith in God produced incredible results.
This book is able to stand on its own, it is clean, and there is a prevalent H.E.A.
When I finished the first book in this series, I immediately downloaded the second, and it did not disappoint. I love the fact that these books are historical, thoughtful, and full of just enough action and romance while still honoring God and the Bible. The only reason I haven’t started the third book in the series is that once I do, I can’t seem to put it down and get anything else accomplished.
This is a compelling read and full of the truth of life even in the 21st century. We as Americans still deal with prejudice and violence and hatred of others who “don’t look like me”. God is long suffering to us all and hopefully he will continue to show mercy on the human race.
Loved that it was subject matter that was new to me, the twists and some historical incite of not only how people of the time thought, but more importantly to me, the reactions of those who were the subject of those thoughts. I also had no idea it was also a murder mystery, one that was not so obvious as to "who done it."
Incredible mixture of historical and fictional characters brings life to the early 1900s in Los Angeles. I feel as though I know these people. Can't wait to start the next Kit Shannon book.
This is very enjoyable Christian historical fiction. A woman lawyer was very unusual, but Kit Shannon has the skills and personality to pull it off. She is very determined and spunky. There is a moral dilemma that also enters into the story.
Another great adventure in Kit's Trials. I sure was fooled how this book ended. Her faith in God and knowledge of the bible plus some gut instincts had this turned around.
These authors have a way of capturing you in their web, with their descriptive characters and fast-paced writing. I was up until 1 a.m. on more than one night to find out what happened next! Fun stories.
You gotta love a woman like Kit Shannon for it is women like her that give us hope in ourselves, our God and our country. Thanks to James Scott Bell and Tracie Peterson for a story I was unable to put down.
Mr. Bell has written another magnificent book. I can't seem to put his books down when I start to read them. He always has everything in his story. Murder, deceit, love, friendliness and so much more. Must read.
I was surprised how much I liked this second book in the series. The first one, while good, dragged a little...this one did not. I was intrigued throughout and didn't want to put it down. I am looking forward to reading the third in this series.
A little slow getting going, the story jumps around a lot in the beginning. But it definitely picks up in the letter half when the trial starts. I enjoyed this book! I wish I had the backbone of Kit!
Kit is now a real bar approved lawyer and has two cases of her own. One for a wong shi, a chinese immigrant being threatened with deportation because they accused her as being a prosititute, but really she refused that kind of service and the accusor wanted revenge. She got her off, but wasn't able to pay for the service or Kit didn't think she was paid till her secret guardian angel happens to be Wong Shi's missing fiance. Then her other case was for her best friend, Corozon's brother who is accused of assult and abuse of a white domestic. Corozon is of mexican decent and therefore prejudice is brought into play by the people of Los Angelos. About this same time Kit meets a doctor, Dr. Jeffery Kenton, who professes to believe and live his Christian beliefs, but later turns out to be someone who will lie to better his life. Juan is at first convicted of a crime he didn't do, but when Kit doesn't give up, she finds that alot of the witnesses lied and in doing so Juan is the one that is being punished. A third letter that is typed by the same typewriter as the threatening notes that Kit had received clinches the deal for her along with the conscience of the district attorney to prosecute the guilty party. The new evidence sets Juan free and puts a hard legal and social punishment on the great Mr. mungerley. Ted Fox was turned down for his proposal of marriage to Kit because he didn't share her same conviction with religion. In trying to move on he pushed forward in his efforts to build a monoplane. He suceeded only to crash after the first flight and loose his leg as a result. he leaves town even at the insistance of Kit to stay with her.

I hate to say that I liked this book less than the first one. There were far too many elements of trite Christian fiction typical of Tracie Peterson for Bell's far better writing to overwhelm.
The story could have been so much better if Bell had been the only author. The plot was compelling with just enough twists to make it interesting without being unbelievable. However, these good aspects were overshadowed by "preaching" and sudden character changes.
Bell's decent prose is the only thing keeping these books on my shelf. (Okay, I admit that I have a soft spot for the series that still lingers from the first time I read these books and absolutely fell in love with them.)
Thankfully, the third book in the series seems to be free of as much pedestrian writing as this book. Plus, the follow-up series was written by Bell alone. I know without reading that those books will be much better than these.
I was a little disappointed to find that this was the 2nd book in a series (I'm a series fanatic, and must read them in order!), but it didn't seem to matter than I hadn't read the first one. Which I suppose is the sign of a good book -- that it can stand on its own, no?
This was very interesting and a quick read -- fascinating historically, it takes place in Los Angeles of 1904. With a female lawyer (in the story, she's "one of the first to pass the bar, and the first to appear in court") fighting societal prejudices about herself and her client, it's upsetting and uplifting.
She definitely fights for the underdog -- a Chinese girl accused of prostitution, and a Mexican guy accused of rape and murder -- because she knows it's right.
This is the first I've read of these authors, but I'd read another one or two if I ran across them :)
Love this series. Always a good fight for the heroine who struggles with being determined and then wondering if she is doing the right thing. I love her reliance on God and the peace she receives from praying, but it is not without an internal struggle and external challenges. Just enough danger to keep turning pages and wonder if she will make it through, and always an unexpected outcome. I'm looking forward to the next one...
Bell certainly writes exciting historical mysteries. I love all the twists. I love the historical and Christian lessons of women's rights. Love this author. Off to buy the next book!
