Welcome to Morningwood #7

Pumpkin Cream Pie

Rate this book
A young man with a turbulent past meets the only man with a hand steady enough to tame him.

Seamus is a nineteen-year-old falcon shifter with a bad reputation, just ask anyone. Growing up in the insulated all-shifter town of Morningwood, there isn’t a person around who doesn’t remember each of his mistakes and they aren’t afraid to throw them in his face at every chance. He’d leave town entirely if it weren’t for his little brother and his stupid hope that Morningwood is where he belongs.

Leo Thibodeaux recently returned to Morningwood after his father died, leaving the leadership of the rabbit clan up to Leo. Widowed and a single father, Leo tries to do the best he can for his son, his pack, and his town.

When Seamus nearly burns down Morningwood University, he’s given a choice, go to jail or do the repairs under the tutelage of Leo. Seamus expects Leo to treat him like everyone else does, but amazingly, while Leo does command respect, he doesn’t look down his nose at Seamus. It doesn’t take long for Seamus to realize that Leo isn’t at all like the others. He makes Seamus feel protected, like he can turn his life around, he can be a friend, a better brother, a mate.

Leo recognizes that the timing isn’t ideal. He was meant to mentor Seamus, but there is nothing he can do when the beast inside him recognizes his mate. They agree to keep their relationship behind closed doors, at least until the repairs can be done, but even that comes with its own risk.

Meanwhile, there’s a spooky mystery in Morningwood. Someone—or something—is digging up old bones from the local cemetery and leaving them around town. It sounds like a stunt Seamus might have pulled, but this time he’s innocent. But as his past deeds place him under suspicion, Seamus knows the true culprit must be found, or he’ll lose everything.

Pumpkin Cream Pie is the seventh book in the Welcome to Morningwood series. It can absolutely be read as a standalone for total enjoyment and features an age gap romance, a new and steamy way to eat pumpkin cream pie, themes of family and redemption as well as all the sexy, sultry, fun you expect from Morningwood!

Seamus is an angry person. He drinks too much, smokes weed, sells drugs, gets into fights and destroys things. The opening scene is of him trying to burn the university down over a slight against his brother. We already know his history from previous books. I immediately didn't like him. The whole town doesn't like him. He's nothing but trouble. But see, sometimes, there's a reason behind certain behaviors.
This dinner had been a test, though I hadn't known that until right this minute. We were halfway through our plates, and there hadn't been an argument or sour word. Things could be good. I could be treated normally. It would take effort, and nothing would change everyone's minds about me, but I didn't have to do that. Just enough people so that the entire town didn't think I was a piece of shit."
Leo is the head of his rabbit clan. He's a father and he's respected within his clan as well as the community. He's likable. When he offers to take Seamus under his wing to make restitution, he quickly finds out Seamus isn't what the town would have him believe. And while he has made numerous mistakes, he just needs someone to believe there is more to him than all his misdeeds. He needs Leo.
"I always knew I was broken, but until I met you, I didn't know I could be fixed."

"Before meeting you, I felt like I was suffocating in a plastic bag that shrunk more and more each day. But with you, I can breathe."

This one is absolutely my favorite of the series. I was amazed the author could take me from truly disliking Seamus to rooting for him to get his HEA. I spent a lot of the time waiting for the other shoe to drop for Seamus. And when it does, my heart ached for him. I wanted to strangle Leo at one point but I also understood some of his reaction. I think Seamus forgave him a little too easily and Leo needed to grovel a little more but, I was also glad it wasn't drug out too long and they get their HFN. I want to see more of these two in future books. I think we need to see the town begin to forgive Seamus as well.
This isn't who I want to be anymore. I have something I want to ask you, but first, I need you to know this. I needed you to see that I'm done with who I was."

Another wonderfully sweet romance with a nice twist of a Halloween mystery for good measure! I absolutely adore Seamus and how complex he was... Leo was pretty awesome as well.

This was a cute sweet read. We have Seamus who is not a bad kid but someone who has made some bad decisions. The town looks down on him and is quick to judge him in not so good ways. His mom is working hard to take care of him and his younger brother and he helps the only way he can by dealing. When his brother is treat no so nicely by a professor, Seamus does a really stupid thing and sets fire to the college sign and does some damage to the school property. As punishment for his actions, he meets Leo who is the alpha of the rabbits and makes things with his hands. Seamus has to work with him to repair/replace the things he damaged. There is an instant attraction between the two, but since Seamus is so much younger than Leo he doesn’t want to cross that line. But, Seamus is Leo’s mate and that knocks down the last of the walls. There is Seamus trying to turn his life around while falling in love with his Alpha and doing what’s right for his family. There is a mystery happening in the background of this story and I pretty much had it figured out but that didn’t distract me from the story. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but I will be fixing that.

ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, this story was so good but made did it make me sad. When life just keeps taking you down, you lose a parent and you feel like you have to step in to that role. Help take care of your little brother. But somewhere along the way, you can’t handle all the pressure and you end up doing things you never thought you would. Like pushing drugs to the wrong people. Or pushing them period. And now everyone looks at you like you’re a leper or a leech on society. You’re the pariah. The bad guy, the outcast. And for once, you wish someone would look at you like you mattered.
Seamus was furious. No one made his brother cry. NO ONE. He would get his revenge. He had a gas can, alcohol and a few joints to get this party started. This university would burn for hurting his brother. He started the fire, but before it could burn down, the fire department put it out and he was caught. For one more thing he had done wrong. Now his mother was bailing him out again and the looks on everyone’s faces were pity for her and contempt for him. But the sheriff worked something out. He would fix the damage with the rabbit clan, or the head of the clan, Leo. That doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be another mark against him or anything but he would make it up. But the desire between Leo and Seamus were making things harder, to the point they finally started acting on things. But Seamus was scared to admit, he was scared. He ex had done a number on him. Not physically, but emotionally and mentally. And it left its mark. Leo had to constantly reassure him. But during all this, another thing was happening. Someone was digging up graves and snatching the bones, putting them in weird spots. And when it came after Seamus, he panicked and raced for Leo. But of course, when Leo went to investigate, no one was there and the bones this time were very personal. And Leo treated Seamus the way everyone else did. He didn’t believe him and made him feel lower than dirt. So Seamus took off, thinking it would be better on everyone else. And there may be no making it up.
Once you get a bad rep for something, it seems like no one ever forgets. Or lets you forget. You can’t ever make things right or start over or anything because everyone is determined to rub in your face all the bad you’ve ever done. But when the one person you finally fully trust to have your back, turns on you as well, nothing will ever make that right. Or that’s at least how it feels. It feels like the worst betrayal ever. And Seamus was in over his head. His own mate even turned on him over something he didn’t even do. My heart broke for the man. It was one thing after another. He finally hoped he had found the one man who could change the future for him and with him, but how can he trust him again?
But I felt for Leo a bit too. Although I wanted to shake him first. But once he realized his mistake, he tried so hard to make it up. But when Seamus took off, it was hard to do that. He was going crazy trying to find him and bring him home and make him feel like he should have to begin with.
So yeah, this one was a toughie. A good one for sure, but it will cause you to shed a few tears.

Hawks & rabbits & a Halloween mystery, Oh My !

I loved this book! Welcome back to the unique & wondrous world that is Morningwood. Old friends are back. New ones turn up. There is family angst, loyalty, redemption, cute kids, age- gap, compassion, grudges, biased accusations, passion, a mystery, sex, and HEA. Did I mention Halloween? What's not to love!
This is Seamus & Leo's story. Seamus is always in trouble. When his latest mishap (trying to avenge his brother) has dire consequences , Sean has hard choices to make. Leo is the Alpha of the rabbit clan. Leo isn't looking for a mate, until fate dumps Seamus in his lap. Ever compassionate, he sees his younger self in Seamus, & wants to help. As Seamus's redemption progresses, so does their relationship. Add a mystery to the mix and things get a little wild. Nothing like a spooky Halloween to heat things up.
Yes, there is mpreg. Yes, there are lots of bumps in the road to HEA. But rest assured. They get there. You will love this book. I couldn't put it down!
This book can be read alone
But I recommend reading the rest of the series. It will give you the background to this unique world. Time well spent.
This book contains adult themes and language. MM sex, and is intended for mature readers only.

I'm glad to see Leo meet his mate, and Seamus get his redemption. I think you really have to have read the rest of the books to get the full impact of this story. So many important things happen with the secondary characters of this story. I still love Morningwood. ;-)

Again, I haven't read all the entries yet but of the ones I have, I think I can safely say this was my favorite. We met both Seamus and Leo previously, in small increments but certainly not new to me completely. Seamus ran with a tough crowd and it was easy to have a preconceived impression of the lad but as we all know, everyone has secrets or at least parts of themselves others don't see and it's those parts that can add a heck of a lot of context to what we thought we knew. I actually found both guys very easy to like but that doesn't mean I didn't want to smack their heads together a couple of times to make them open up more.

As for Leo, he might come across as too good, or at least Seamus thinks so and expects to see what Leo hides from everyone once the doors are closed. The big surprise is Leo isn't really hiding anything but that doesn't mean he doesn't jump to conclusions like practically everyone else in Morningwood at some point(I won't spoil anything with more specifics here). It was at this time I wanted to perhaps give Leo a bit more than smack but lets face it, if everything and everyone was super open and super good fiction would be a lot shorter.

I love the blending of healing, hurting, attraction, mystery, and heart that Kiki Burrelli brings to the table in Pumpkin Cream Pie, the whole Welcome to Morningwood series really. Sometimes earning and keeping one's trust is at the heart of a story but it's the effects it leaves on the characters that suck you in and I really think that is what Pumpkin Cream Pie is all about: trust. And sometimes its trusting the author to bring it all together that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and I found that to be very true here. I look forward to experiencing the other entries in the series as time allows me to.

Finally something good from K. Burelli

It's been so long since I enjoyed a work of Kiki Burelli, not because of lack of books but more a thing of quality. Now this book has the same rushed passing, classic and re-re-re-used sexual intercourse scenes and grammar erros. But the story is romantic, the dialogues sound quite natural, the drama is just enough to make you hold your breath and cheer for them to find their happily ever after. And I'm actually wondering... Is she gonna do something with Shiloh?

This series is definitely growing on me. I felt like Seamus was a kindred spirit. Totally misunderstood, barely adult kid. He keeps acting out because everyone expects him to. After a few bad decisions everyone views Seamus with akin to contempt. Leo is the older, wiser Alpha who takes Seamus under his wing. Loves and believes him....until he doesn't. Whew I was sooo mad when that plot complication popped up. Definitely the sign of a good story. I was so invested I was livid for Seamus. Poor boy. As always an HEA just how I like it.

Cried too much

Kiki made me cry too much with this one. Seamus was acting out because everyone always expected the worst from him. Treating him like trash. Leo came along and gave him love and life lessons. It was a fairly quick read, with a perfect side of Halloween thrown in.

Pumpkin Cream Pie is an ok book. There is not much that makes it stand out from other shifters/omega stories. But we have likable characters. And I liked Seamus a lot as he isn't the all-sweet, fragile omega every omegaverse story has. Overall it's easy, enjoyable reading,

The outcast

Seamus is the outcast. The one everyone blames for things. This time he did the crime. Leo agrees to oversee the punishment. Seamus and Leo create a beautiful thing.

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like
‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd,
‘Save the kids' series from EM Leya,
‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or
'Liberty' from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books and
Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times a year (most romances where you can
enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader,
maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok). It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

Fantastic

This was definitely my favorite couple out of all of the Morningwood books. Though I thought that it was odd that Leo never once shifted in this book, and Seamus only shifted twice (once in the beginning, and once at the end). Since the whole predator vs prey mating was such a big deal in the other books, I was a bit surprised that it never even came up as a thing that a falcon is now mated to a rabbit.

But beyond all of that, I loved Leo and Seamus together. I loved that Leo helped Seamus by simply showing him respect and some common decency. That by doing so, Seamus could finally have a chance to live up to someone's expectations. I loved that Leo proved that he would stand by Seamus.

Man I love this series!!!

This was amazing. I laughed, cried, and got angry while still getting those beautiful Awww moments. Here’s the interesting thing about this author. Years ago I got hooked on shifter reads after reading an author that shared a name with one of the characters in this book. While checking out similar authors I came across this book about some guy named Finn and I’ve been hooked ever since. While each series may share some similar traits each is also different. In fact I find this one to be the most unique one I’ve ever read. Humor is a big draw for me in books and people. Yeah I want all the other stuff but I want a natural laugh when I read and Kiki gives that to me with every book in this series. Btw I did laugh so hard I fell out my seat here. Once you read it you’ll know where lol. A dream of a read from start to finish.

It is interesting how after all that happened in previous books, the life as always continued in Morningwood, or not? Jejeje you now will meet Seamus who got in difficulties with the law defending his brother and Leopold who helped him to recover his trust in alphas (and people) in general. In the process they find each other, fell in love and got a great HEA. In this book also we got to witness the aftermath in Arthur and Aries’ story. Amazing reading!!
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*

This is an addictive series that just keeps getting better. This instalment focuses on Seamus/Leo and their bumpy journey to HEA. The chemistry between Seamus and Leo was smouldering and intoxicating.

A fantastic addition to the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great quick read

Seamus really needed guidance, direction, structure, and unconditional love and Leo supplied that and so much more. Leo even had the patience to deal with his rash immaturity and brought a calmness to him. This was a really good read.
