In BJ Ward's Landing in New Jersey with Soft Hands , each poem is a journey filled with discovery as we travel roads of America and the heart, trusting always Ward's steady hand upon the wheel. The poems are richly diverse, from 'The Dying of the Light,' with its insistent pathos, or the wry premise of 'Shakespeare as a Waiter,' and the generous elegance of 'Dancing with the Teacher.' What unites this stunning debut is Ward's consistent depiction of a world filled with the anguish and promise of 'something here, something now' that sweet something that won't grasp you or be grasped.
BJ Wards most recent book of poetry, Gravediggers Birthday, was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize. His two earlier volumes are 17 Love Poems with No Despair and Landing in New Jersey with Soft Hands. All three volumes are published by North Atlantic Books (Berkeley, CA).
Mr. Wards poetry has been featured on Poetry Daily, National Public Radios The Writers Almanac, and New Jersey Networks State of the Arts, as well as in publications such as The Pushcart Prize Anthology, Poetry, TriQuarterly, The Literary Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, The Sun, and a host of other journals. His essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Worcester Review, and Teaching Artist Journal. He is the recipient of two Distinguished Artist Fellowships from the NJ State Council on the Arts. In 2002, one of his poems (For the Children of the World Trade Center Victims) was cast in bronze and acquired as part of the permanent collection at Grounds for Sculpture, an outdoor sculpture museum in Hamilton, New Jersey. He lives with his wife and son in Changewater, NJ, and teaches in the Creative Writing program at Warren County Community College.
this book really spoke to me. To this day I read poems like this when I'm around an open mike. I love BJ Ward and consider him a friend. I thank him for all the events he came to when I worked at Borders...
Probably the best teacher/professor I have ever had. He helped stretch my own writing like I never dreamed and I will forever be grateful. these poems reached me on a deep level. A collection I still go back to on a regular basis.
