Lord Ashley Rawdon has agreed to accompany his painfully shy brother, the Duke of Coventry, to a country house party with the goal of securing him a wealthy bride. A dedicated rake, Ashley is so confident he can help his brother to ensnare the lady of his choosing, he offers him a wager. It’s too bad the lady his brother selects is Miss Prudence Winter, who is infuriating, stubborn, and far too alluring.
Pru has no patience for sophisticated, handsome scoundrels like Lord Ashley. Nor does she seek a husband. All she wants is to spend the house party in peace so she can return to her charity work in London. But Lord Ashley is persistent. And far too charming.
Ashley’s plan is proceeding splendidly. Until he finds himself accidentally stranded with Pru, and he cannot resist stealing a kiss…
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
Another amazing story from Scarlet Scott! I just love her besotted heroes. This one was so cute and he just couldn't leave her alone. Even though his brother was thinking about making her his wife... or was he!??! They meet at a house party and he can't stay away from her. He says it's for his brother but from the first scene you know it's going to be a wonderful romance between them. He tries, not very hard though, to be noble but their connection is so hot. I loved it.
Just a simply delicious story and I loved when He regretted his past womanizing ways and wished he had waited for her. It was just too sweet. I can't wait for the next story that is coming out in a week about his brother and Cristabella! There were enough scenes in this book to make me eager to read it. Especially the snowball fight scene. I wish it was out now. But I got it on speed order.
Just can't say anything bad about the story except that it was over too fast and I just wish it would have been longer. Thank you Me Scott for a wonderfully romantic and sweet Sunday afternoon read!
This is a wonderful book. So sensual and passionate. A rake and a lady, but who’s going to fall first.
Pru is the oldest sister , sensible, wise , outspoken, mothering type of woman, she stands for no nonsense. But when she meets Lord Ashley, her defences start to crumble with unprecedented speed.
The man is a force to be reckoned with, Ash is a rake , a bounder , the man has slept with more women than he can remember. He’s helping his brother to find a wife , preferably Pru , but suddenly he begins to realise that it’s him who wants her and not just for a conquest but for life.
These two have an awesome chemistry, it’s a brilliant read I loved every page.
Recommended to all fans of Scarlett’s books . Read the rest of the series too , preferably but not necessarily in order . They’re great .
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Scarlett Scott continues to spin us up in a romance with another adorable tale of a besotted rake and a delightful spinster.
The Plot Lord Ashley, younger brother to Gill, the painfully shy & socially anxious Duke of Coventry, wagers Gill that he can woo the eldest Winter sister Prudence to be the future Duchess. An easy enough feat for a seasoned rake, but much to his consternation Ash is himself very attracted to Pru. Pru, on the other hand, has no wish to wed, forget about being a Duchess, despite the charms, Ash is plying her with all she wants to do is build & run a foundling hospital, using her portion of the Winter fortune. But with constant proximity in the house party, defences start to crumble, attraction blossoms on the journey to HEA.
What I Liked This was a delightful story high on emotion but low on angst. It moved at a great pace and left me wanting more & feeling good!
The character development was perfectly paced, none of the drama involving extended "hold-outs" or "big misunderstanding" there was honesty from the get-go. I am very appreciative of honest characters.
The chemistry between the characters is sizzling without being crass, as is true of all Wicked Winter books.
As usual, Scarlett Scott can weave an excellent page-turner, her writing is great, humorous and does justice to her main characters even though there are many other people introduced who get their own stories.
A little thing that did not work for me was the being wagered part, even though it gets clarified later I took half a star away for that gaffe.
The Hero Ash was a great poster child for reformed rake. His philandering ways are due to his parents' horrendous marriage & his mother's many affairs but he is open to feeling an emotional connection and not until it's too late. He is super protective of his brother and holds him in high regard, helps him out however he can and never belittles Gill's shortcomings. He is respectful & supportive of Pru and her hopes and dreams. All said and done, Ash is a guy with a conscience. I loved him.
The Heroine Prudence showed the maturity to match her age. Not a dewy-eyed debutante, she is motherly to her sisters, has endless patience, is not reticent and displays a sense of self-assuredness. The bond between the Winter sisters is so amazing it made me wish I had sisters! I loved that Pru was not a prude, absolutely unafraid to ask for whatever she wants, let it be in bed or life!
My Recommendation Go ahead and read this novella, then read the entire Wicked Winter series and then go for reading the complete Scarlett Scott bibliography, that is what I am doing!
This was a very good story!! Lord Ashley Rawdon brother to the Duke of Coventry is on a mission to find his Brother the Duke a Wife. He choice is Prudence Winter the Eldest Winter Sister. Prudence lacks self confidence she is tall and believes herself less beautiful then her other sisters. Pru knows Lord Ashley is out to obtain her very large dowry. This seems to be the plot for all the Winter sisters storyline. Improvised Lord or Gentlemen looking for a Rich Wife to bale him out of debt.
What I really like about this story is the tables are turned on Ash. He falls in Love with Pru but he loves his brother and feels guilty about lusting after his brother future wife. But I loved Ash because he helps Pru seen that see is as beautiful as her sisters and bring out her self confidence. But there is a surprise his brother The Duke of Conventry has turned the table on him!!
This was a fun sexy story of love for ones siblings.
I absolutely loved this storyline! I love the characters and the narrative.
I have read just about all of Scarlett Scott this’s historical romance ❤️. She never disappoints her readers. Dev Winters and his wife are having a week long house party. He has five beautiful younger sisters, and he wants them to marry respectable gentleman. Lord Ashley Rawdon is tagging along with his shy older brother, Gill, the Duke of Coventry.
Miss. Prudence Winters is the oldest of the sisters and has decided not to ever marry. Until the gorgeous scoundrel Lord Ashley seeks her out in favor of his brother.
Lord Ashley and Miss. Pru end up attracted to each other! Meanwhile the quiet and shy Duke is actually attracted to another Winters sister!
This was such a fun read, I laughed and at times felt bad for the gorgeous Lord Ashley. This is a well written, flowing story, with great attention to details. A bit of hot romantic scenes. Tastefully written, a page turner, and I am looking forward to Book 6 💕
Lord Ashley, a well known rake, is aiding his shy brother to woo a bride. However, the Winter sister chosen, Prudence, is the one woman that Ashley feels drawn to. Prudence has no intention of marrying and has other plans for her dowry. They are attracted to each other but Prudence, well aware of Ashley’s reputation, tries to fight her attraction to him. Prudence is the eldest sister and has always thought of herself as the one to guide her sisters. There is also Prudence’s over protective brother lurking in the background. This was an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to reading about the last of the sisters. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lord Ashley Rawdon has agreed to accompany his painfully shy brother, Gil the Duke of Coventry, to a country house party with the goal of securing him a wealthy bride. A dedicated rake, Ash is so confident he can help his brother to ensnare the lady of his choosing, he offers him a wager. It’s too bad the lady his brother selects is Miss Prudence Winter, who is infuriating, stubborn, and far too alluring. Pru has no patience for sophisticated, handsome scoundrels like Lord Ashley even if her heart rate increases every time he’s near. Nor does she seek a husband as all she wants is return to her charity work in London & ti build her own foundling hospital. Another engrossing Winters book, Ash & Pru are delightful & every time they meet sparks fly, their verbal bantering is witty & entertaining however their attraction is sizzling. She’s supposed to become his sister in law until Ash realises that isn’t the outcome he wants. I loved both Ash & Pru he's the rake who falls hard & she's the elder sensible sister who finally lets her hair down. I read this well written enthralling book in an afternoon & I loved it. We found out more about Gil & Ash’s childhood, which made me want to read the final story in the series. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Wagered in Winter is the fifth book in the Wicked Winters series. It is based on the Winter’s family and this one is Prudence’s story, the eldest sister. Dev Winter’s was trying to find wealthy, titled gentlemen for his sisters to wed so his wife hosted a Christmas house party and invited several gentlemen. Prudence is not looking for a husband, especially a handsome rake. She wants to live a life of independence and build a foundling hospital. The Duke of Coventry’s younger brother, Lord Ashley, was not seeking a wife for himself but for his shy older brother. To help his brother, Lord Ashley agrees to woo Prudence for the duke. Little did he realize that he would be interested in Prudence for himself! He was so confident in his skills too woo, but when he fails to impress Prudence he suggests a bargain. She will tutor him on how to successfully woo a lady and he will volunteer at her foundling hospital for a sennight. Somewhere along the way, Ashley realizes that he can’t let Prudence go, he had to make her his. This has been a great series and this was a great addition to it. I love all the Winter sisters, they are fiercely loyal, independent and full of spirit. I can’t wait to read the next book that is for Christabella and Gill, the Duke of Coventry. Christabella is supposed to be the wildest sister so it will certainly be full of spice!
It was a pleasure to read this enjoyable story. Loved the storyline and characters. A very entertaining story. I agree with Debbie DiFiore, this series just gets better. 5☆
Wagered in Winter by Scarlett Scott is book 5 in The Wicked Winters Series. This is the story of Prudence 'Pru' Winter and Ashley 'Ash' Rawdon. I have read the previous book but feel this can be a standalone book if you wish to do so. Ash is a popular rake who enjoys his title of that but his brother who is the Duke of Coventry is a shy man who needs a wife. So Ash is set to help him at a country house part to help him court and find a wife. Ash's brother settles on Pru so Ash goes forward to set this in motion. But the more he is around Pru the more he learns of her the more he wants her for himself. Pru is the oldest with no plans to give up her spinsterhood. In fact she has plans for opening a founding hospital. So when Ash starts putting his charm on her and popping up everywhere she tries to resist him but that becomes impossible. Loved reading their story.
I love everything by Mrs. Scott and will always devour her books. The Duke of Coventry struggles with social interactions, and is heavily-dependent on his brother, Lord Rawdon, who known as a rakehell. At a country house party, Gill (Duke of Coventry) enlists the help of Ash (Lord Rawdon) to help him find a wealthy wife. The dukedom is close to ruin and Gill needs a wealthy lady to help bring the estate to good standing and its former glory. Gill sets his sights on Ms. Prudence Winter. The Winters are a notorious, but wealthy family. Pru is the oldest sister and all she wants to do is work on her hospital and be a spinster.
Ash makes Gill a wager that he can win whichever lady he sets his sights on. Pru turns out to be quite a challenge, but unfortunately for Ash, there are some real sparks there. This turns out to be more than a harmless little wager he will be able to forget. Will Ash be persuaded to claim Pru for himself? Can Pru be persuaded to tie herself to a husband?
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Starring Miss Prudence “Pru” Winters and Lord Ashley “Ash” Rawdon.
Ash was suppose to be courting Pru for his painfully shy brother, the Duke of Conventry. But when Ash starts to get to know her he realizes that Pru belongs with him and only him, so he decides to woo her for himself. Ash is a rake through and through... but they make the best husband, right?! Oh yeah!!
Pru just wants to be left alone, remain a spinster, and open a foundling hospital... but everywhere she turns there’s Ash. She tries (and fails) to resist him, but he brings out her deliciously naughty side.
Awwwww!! I loved Ash and Pru... and their Courting Lessons!! My, oh my... these two brought the heat and they were absolutely wonderful together!! I thoroughly enjoyed their road to HEA.
This is the 5th book in the WICKED WINTERS series. Scarlett Scott has done an amazing job keeping me glued to these characters and their stories. Loved each book and I can not wait for the next one!!
Learned a new word: bug·bear /ˈbəɡˌber/ 1. a cause of obsessive fear, irritation, or loathing.
2. an imaginary being invoked to frighten children, typically a sort of hobgoblin supposed to devour them.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and have also pre-ordered it. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own
My Star System: 4 1/2 stars Book was great. Loved the characters. Aaaaaaaalmost made me cry. Will definitely be re-reading this story.
The 5th book in the Wicked Winter series continues at the Winter’s house party with Miss Prudence “Pru” Winter, the eldest and tallest Winter sister, and Lord Ashley “Ash” Rawdon, the rakish brother of the quiet Duke of Coventry. The brothers make a wager about finding a wife for the Duke, which is where Pru comes into the story. Except there’s a smoldering attraction between Ash and Pru. One they are denying because well she is good and pure and he is a rake of the worst kind. So they would not make a good match or match at all because well rakes don’t get married, right? And they certainly aren’t attracted to women like Prudence Winter. She is more interested in creating her own foundling home than marriage!
I adored this story of a rake who falls in love. The interaction between the main characters made me laugh, ache and excited to find out what would happen between these two. The epilogue was super sweet, unexpected and spicy! If you love the reformed rake trope I recommend reading this book. I am looking forward to what happens with Christabella! I received an ARC of this book and chose to post my review.
Scrumptious! I devoured every word that was filled with humor, sizzling desire and a hero who was as handsome as he was full of himself! Used to just looking at a woman and she falling at his feet, Lord Ashley didn't think it would be so hard to obtain Miss Prudence Winter's interest and push her toward his brother! Pru was everything upright and good, passionate about her desire's to start a foundling home with her fortune and no need for a husband. Fortunately (ok my opinion) with her interaction with Ash, she was about to be find out what true desire was and not just was she was reading in her scandalous novel! Witty banter off the charts and a cat and mouse game trying to resist each other, seems to only bring these two together. He, trying to remember his shy brother would like to wed her for her fortune and to save the Dukedom, and she trying her best to resist him but failing miserably! Another absolutely perfect slow heated romance that ends in a wonderful epilogue. Although this can be read alone, do not miss a word of the rest of this series! You will thank me, truly!!
Beautiful, funny, sweet, sexy...everything you want in a historical romance all rolled into one book! Another wonderful inter-connected story of the Winter family, which I found impossible to put down. While this story is about Ash and Pru, you still get some of the dynamics from the other characters in the prior / future stories, without spoiling their stores, or duplicating the books and/or re-reading the same material. I don’t know how Scarlett does it, but you never feel like you are reading the same book twice. The whole series has been great, but I LOVED this book!!
This book was GREAT...probably my favorite in the Winter Series so far! I highly recommend this book to all! I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
I think this is my favorite in this series so far. Ash is so sweet yet rakish. Pru let’s desires shine. shes different than a lot of HR heroines, she’s not shy in her thoughts to herself. She likes his ass not just hi arms like we too often see,and her observations are witty. I loved seeing Gill and Christabelle’s story on the side as well. Though all 5 sisters have their courtships happening at the sane time, these are the only two where we see the stories collide, and I’m here for it.
Minimal sexy times but passion and desire building under the surface. Even the kisses leave the reader wanting more.
Oh, how I am loving the Wicked Winters! This is an amazing series, but can be read as a standalone. Very well done of Ms Scott, how she has overlapped the stories, as they all take place at the same Christmas house party, and yet you can read without having read the others and it still makes perfect sense. Ash(ley) is the consummate rake, who meets his match in Pru(dence), and the fall is hard and so enjoyable to read. So looking forward to reading on in the series. Highly recommend.
Another stellar tale in this series! I am not overly keen on novella length stories but this was well told and very enjoyable. Also, this book had the most adorable epilogue in the series so far.
Sensual and full of tension, this is one of the better ones in this series so far! Love headstrong, practical, and passionate Pru; she was a great character and very relatable. The storyline was entertaining!
I read this right after reading the fourth book in this series, so my view might be skewed. However, after reading about a rake in Willful in Winter with a heroine who never wanted to marry, reading this book about a rake and a heroine who never wants to marry kind of fell flat. This could explain why I gave Willful in Winter one more star than this one.
I thought it was an interesting premise having Ashley try to secure a wife for his shy brother and Ashley/Pru weren't horrible characters. However, it just felt repetitive compared to the previous book. Especially when whole scenes were repeated because Ashley was present in a conversation in the previous book.
Overall, it's not my favorite. However, if it's read separate from the series or with more time in-between from the previous book, the glaring issues I had with it may not be issues at all.
What a wonderful & hot way to spend on a Winter's day! This hero will make you swoon & the heroine stands by her dreams to the end.
As a second son & a well earned reputation as a rakehell, Lord Ashley "Ash" Rawdon is extremely content with his life but now he has found himself at a country house party. His brother, Gill, the Duke of Coventry has been painfully shy all of his life due to his past mistreatment by their deceased father & Ash has always helped him in social situations. Now Ash has agreed to help Gill find a wealthy wife to help bring the dukedom back from their wastrel father's ruin & he is so positive he can maneuver the lady right into his brother's arms they make a wager on his success - until he finds out his brother's choice is Miss Prudence Winter, who is obstinate. argumentative & oh so tempting.
Prudence "Pru" has no use for the handsome rogues, such as Lord Ashley but she does appreciate his sophisticated, handsome looks & the way her heart flutters when he is near. She, however; has her own plans for her life. She does not want a husband & enjoys the thought of freedom to do what she wants with her inheritance. She wants to return to spend time with the children at the hospital her brother patronizes & begin to build her own foundling hospital.
Ash & Pru have a relationship for the ages - he goes from a rake of the worst kind to falling so hard it made my eyes water & she changes from the eldest sister & mother figure to her sisters to a lady who is tired of being boring & wants to have some fun. Ash will not give up his single life & Pru will not let go of her dreams of the foundling hospital - who will win, or will they both lose? I highly recommend this book the the entire Wicked Winters Series - Scarlett Scott keeps you turning pages to see what happens next but I am always sad when it ends & now I can't wait to read Book 6.
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
I am so totally enjoying the series about the Winter sisters, and this book about Pru and Ash is no exception. The two of them have electrical impulses shooting from their fingertips whenever they get close, but Pru isn't quite as knowledgeable about love as she thinks she is, and just doesn't notice. This story is about Ash making sure she notices and getting hoist on his own petard when his courting turns serious.
These two were just cute together. I loved the back and forth between them - the rake and the innocent. Well, maybe not so innocent thanks to "those books". It isn't often I read a romance, especially a historical, and smile almost all the way through.
This book opens with the two of them at odds and ends in a happily ever after. I don't think any more needs to be said about the story. Except maybe that it had just enough steam to keep it interesting but didn't go over the top. I will say it was plotted well and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the characters were developed, especially Ash and his brother Gill. No, I haven't read Gill's story yet, I'm sure I'll get there, but since I'm, as usual, reading them out of order, I now have to go back to the beginning and try to figure out what I've missed. :-)
Thank you Ms. Scott for a book I'll go back to and read again.
Ashley's brother, the duke, has decided that it is time that he needs to take a bride. Since his brother is painfully shy, Ashley has agreed to attend a house party with him. He is also tasked with seeing if the woman that his brother has picked out for himself, would be a good fit. The problem is that Ashley is wildly attracted to the woman his brother has picked out to be his intended. How can he continue to spend time with her, when he knows that he can't have her?
Pru doesn't want to marry. When Lord Ashley seems to keep seeking her out, all that she can think is that he wants to have an affair with her. A rogue like him would never have honorable attentions, even if she wanted wedded bliss. But the more time they spend together, Pru can't seem to fight the feelings that she has developed. Will she change her mind about marriage or maybe have an affair instead?
I loved Pru and Ashley's story! We had seen these two dancing around one another in the other books in the series, so it was fun to finally see their sides of it. Neither Pru nor Ashley had any plans to marry, so it was a lot of fun watching them fall for each other and eventually change their minds. I'm so excited for the next book in the series which features Ashley's brother and the last remaining Winter sister.
I'm really loving this series! They have just enough spice to get you through the cold winter nights! Prudence is the oldest of the Winter sisters and as the oldest feels she must often be the voice of reason. Therefore she cannot allow herself to fall for the seductive charms of the handsome rake, Lord Ashley. Much to her annoyance Ash seems to be popping up every time she tries to sneak away for some much needed alone time during the house party being put on by her older brother. Ash is only at the party to help his shy older brother, the Duke of Coventry, find a wealth bride and fast. Pru seems to fit the bill for his brother's future Duchess, but the only problem is that he forgets that the purpose of meeting with her is to court her for his bother and not himself! These two fight to ignore the sizzling passion that sparks between them, and lucky for us they aren't doing a very good job at it!! I'm really looking forward to the next one in the series!!
Ash takes one look at Prudence and is instantly smitten! Pru takes one look at Ash and seems a rakehell who has slept with over half of London! Ash follows around Pru because of a bet with his brother the Duke who is tongue tied and speaks few words that he will gather information about her as a future Duchess! Pru is constantly hiding from Ash except when they are exchanging stolen kisses! Pru wants her inheritance to start a fondling hospital and one gorgeous rake who is totally insincere will stop those plans! Pru considers herself the oldest and most sensible of the sisters and the least susceptible! What happens when Ash is honest with Pru confesses she has gotten under his skin and his every thought is of her? All bets are off! Everyone knows reformed rakes make the best husbands.......
Lord Ashley Rawdon has wagered his brother, Gill, the Duke of Coventry he can win him a bride. He’s chosen Miss Prudence Winter for his bride. Ashley is a rake, a bounder and he thought it would be a simple wager to win, after all he’s the man has slept with more women than he can remember. Pru is the oldest Winter sister, she’s sensible and very outspoken. She’s far too intelligent and beautiful and to put up with his nonsense, but despite his reputation she finds herself attracted to him. As Ashley start getting to know Pru he realizes she’s not the woman for his brother she belongs with him and decides to woo her for himself. I loved these two, it was fun to watch them tango around each other with their witty banter and simmering passions. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
