Set primarily in one of the most visited areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Ghosts of the Cove takes the reader from the turmoil of the Civil War to present day east Tennessee while providing a glimpse of a unique pioneer community and the people who settled there. Seeking a brief respite from her job as a prosecuting attorney, Abby Edwards stumbles on an injured man whose search through his family genealogy reveals surprising secrets from her own family's past.
This split tale starts with the 1800s part, telling the story of Abigail and Jacob, husband and wife who lived in Cades Cove, Tennessee during the Civil War. That war tore apart many families, theirs included. The reader can tell right away that Cades Cove is a favorite place of this author. She described it with all the love it is due. I love that place also.
The other half of the tale takes place today, in Knoxville and Cades Cove, and it the story of Abby and Jake and how they manage to untangle the mysteries of the past. With the help of ghosts, as promised.
The story isn’t overly supernatural and leaves everyone in a good place, but there are bumps along the road, of course. Some of them tragic. But all of both stories are well told and you’ll love this book.
What would it take to make you believe in ghosts? Abby Edwards is debating where she wants to go in life during a brief vacation at Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She is led to rescue an injured hiker by a man - but is he real or a ghost. This is a nice story combining the mystery of what happened to a Civil War family with a contemporary romance that develops as former strangers find connections in their family histories. I found it an enjoyable, not too demanding read.
