Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
We get a breakdown of all the new crazy gantz members. Rapist, killers, weirdos, all of them together, killing monsters...for fun. Unlike what we're used to these guys love to kill. They are all psychos, even the girl who's starting to fall for our favorite hero...KATO! He's going through some tough shit deciding what to do and this girl is calling her a crazy asshole the whole time so he's not having the best time. Oh, also, the vampires start to flip the script here.
Good: The fights are pretty great in this one. Super speed, bloody, and gory. What you expect from Gantz. I also think the new squad is interesting despite being psychos. Kato is becoming a more interesting character too.
Bad: They skip out on a bunch of my favorite heroes. Barely getting screen time.
Overall fun and exciting and a breeze to read. Gantz remains to be a lot of fun! A 3.5 out of 5, I'll bump to a 4.
Kato is still with his morality that refused to kill. He only fight an alien and sent them off to the sky (using Gantz's technology). He saves Anzu, a single mom from the Osaka team, from the alien.
Later, we were introduced to the other Osaka team that have reached 100 points several times; the sadist trio, Sanpei, Tetsuo & Susumi, cleared the game once; Hanaki, cleared the game twice; George/Shimaki, cleared the game 3 times; Kuwabara, cleared the game 3 times; Knob/Muroya, cleared the game 4 times; the strongest among the Osaka team, Oka Hachirou, cleared the game 7 times.
Hikawa and Chiaki team up with the aliens that resemble a samurai. They fight the 3 members of Osaka team. Later, the aliens betrayed them and Hikawa killed them both. Hikawa and Chiaki team up back with the Tokyo team.
The 100-pointer boss is introduced. The boss is a shapeshifter alien.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Ok, wow, things are getting pretty intense. A huge array of different alien species that I believe are modelled after Japanese yokai. Despite the Osaka teams predilections, there are some really great fights here. Katou gets his awesome moment (and a brand new girl to go with it) here despite still wielding that capture tool instead of an actual gun or sword. Apparently, the Osaka team has been doing this for a lot longer than the Tokyo team. Suspension of disbelief required for how a relatively normal girl with little fighting prowess has managed to survive unscathed in a team of made up mostly of degenerates.
Now there are more than one Gantz groups. The fight against the aliens in Osaka continues. Gantz is a graphic novel series of people who must fight aliens to score points for freedom, to restore friends or for better weapons. It is an interesting series and the artwork helps the stories along. The characters develop well.
This is the part of the Osaka storyline where we actually learn something about the members of the Osaka Gantz group. They're extremely badass, but even more dysfunctional than the Tokyo team. I don't expect most of them to survive.
As always, great art and monster design, even if the plot and characterization is kind of shallow.
