In the final book of Shelby Gallagher‘s A Great State trilogy, Julie and Ned embark on their perilous journey from Colorado to Pierce Point, Washington where Julie will rescue – and adopt – baby Addison. Julie hopes to save her from the danger that is only growing more extreme as society continues to collapse and Addison can no longer be safely cared for by her biological parents.Meanwhile, unrest in Oregon continues to intensify and violence in the city becomes deadly as cultures clash and lawlessness begins to rule. Strange murders are happening regularly and the guilty parties will go to great lengths in order to preserve their freedoms. The Rescue chillingly shows the lengths people will go to so they can survive and thrive in times of chaos and uncertainty. Will Julie and Ned survive the mission through the mountains so they can save an innocent life and help usher in a new generation of self-reliant survivors? What will become of Julie’s ex-husband once he surrenders his parental rights? Will Julie’s incompetent brother make it through the collapse on his own? Will the violence that is overtaking Oregon make its way to the Great States?

Mini-Review:

4 Stars for Narration by Lessa James (Audio Production was great.)
3 Stars for Concepts
2 Stars for 2D Characters
2 Stars for Multiple POVs
2 Stars for Overall Execution

I was not a fan of the first book and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this one. I am happy to report that the third book seems to have a better format, clear plot arc within the book and a story told vs summarized reports.

- Narration was great. There was more to work with in this installment and LJ did a great job in making the story come to life.
- Multiple POVs: I can see why the author would want to have them but they did not add to the story. It would have been better to focus on the main character and what happened around her. There are more than enough elements to juggle in that without adding all the extra POVs. The other POVs can be their own story within the world created by the author.
- While I can see potential in the writing, it was inconsistent. There's a lack of focus in the writing. It's best to have a clear idea about what you want to write and then add the pieces to make that flesh out & shine. Instead, it seemed like the author tried to stuff every tangent and idea into the book. The two books I have listened to are less than 200 pages each. It's not a lot of pages and yet a ton of things are covered in each book because most of them are written as summarized events.
- The covers need to be redone. I don't understand why the series title was made the focus point and the book title looks like a byline.

The best of the Great State series.

This series strikes a good balance between character development and portrayal of collapse. The subplot with the gay guy was fascinating, I wish more in the LGBTQ community could hear what the mayor of Portland admits...

Write more books, Shelby!

Nice ending

Wraps everything up nicely. There are enough there to write another book if she so choose. We also got an update on the state of things nationally and a nice reference to the 299 days books.

Excellent post apocalyptic trilogy.

Shelby Gallagher has created a cast of characters that feel real. She has developed a storyline that sucks you in and keeps you hooked until the very last page. Excellent trilogy set for first time author Gallagher.

It was OK. I enjoyed the parts with Julie and Ned, but way too much time was spent on the Portland people. I didn't care about any of those characters, so quickly tired of hearing about them. They dragged the book down.

The Rescue

Wow! They pulled it off! And so much other drama with Quaatel and Patrick, that was an unexpected twist. Beware USA!

The best of the series

After reading the first book in the series I did not intend to read any more. The last quarter or so of that book was a bit too much man hating for me. But when it was hinted that this book would include work from Glen Tate and a return of Grant, I had to catch up. The second book was better and this one was a great read.

But, there is a glaring weakness. I’m hoping to read a book written by either author to tell us what happened to Stave.

A fitting summary

The trilogy ends sadly, but with some new character development to further show how deep down the rabbit hole Portland goes and the necessity of community to survive.

The tie in with Glen Tate’s 299 Days was well done and very smoothly transitioned back and forth.

Good

After the disappointment that was the second book in the series this story was a little better, not a lot, but enough for a three and a half star rating. I'll be honest in saying that I expected a lot more from the series after the first book. In my mind this will always be the series that could have been so much more.

Good read..

if you have never thought of SHTF from the female side of social collapse. Sorry guys, they count so live with it.

Shelby does a wildfire job of following her mentor, Glenn Tate of 299 days. I wish there could be more, but, alas some stories need to not end.

When she wove in the 299 days story my eyes rolled with the fierceness of a thousand suns.
