Oltre ai circoli letterari come il famoso Bloomsbury Group e alla Hogarth Press – la casa editrice fondata insieme al marito Leonard –, Virginia Woolf frequentò gli ambienti più esclusivi della Londra e dell'Inghilterra dell'epoca. Questa ricchezza di relazioni è testimoniata dallo sconfinato epistolario, che conta circa quattromila pagine. Quello di scrivere lettere era un appuntamento fisso nelle sue giornate che spesso la impegnava a lungo.

In questo volumetto presentiamo due lettere che Virginia scrisse nel 1932 a John Lehmann, collaboratore e poi direttore della casa editrice. La questione al centro della prima nasce da una domanda dello stesso Lehmann: «Dove sta andando la poesia, o è morta?». Virginia, in quel momento particolarmente reattiva, scrive una lettera piuttosto vivace al Giovane Poeta. Per dare una lezioncina al suo interlocutore, articola una serie di considerazioni molto interessanti sul lavoro di scrivere, sulla differenza fra prosatori e poeti, sulla ricchezza di autori e opere che l'Inghilterra può vantare e che sono ormai parte di tutti. Tutto un altro il tono della seconda lettera. Virginia, forse pentita e con un diverso stato d'animo, riscrive dopo pochi giorni al Giovane Poeta: fra accenni ad altre questioni letterarie chiude quasi materna: «Per piacere guarisci presto [...] Leonard si unisce a me per ringraziarti della tua lettera». La burrasca è passata, è tornato il sereno.

Sono contenta di aver letto finalmente questo libro, mi è piaciuto anche più di quanto potessi immaginare. Leggere una parte dei diari di Virginia Woolf mi ha permesso di restituirle una dimensione umana. Spesso grandi scrittori come lei vengono incasellati all'interno di descrizioni standard,all'interno di nozioni stilistiche e finiscono per essere descritti solo attraverso ciò che si sa delle loro opere. Con questo libro invece ho riscoperto una Virginia più sensibile,riflessiva, che amava scrivere e leggere e sentiva la necessità di mettere nero su bianco le sue impressioni,le sue idee improvvise ma allo stesso tempo era affaticata dal suo lavoro. Sapere come abbia sofferto la scrittura di alcune sue opere o come abbia recepito aspre critiche e anche elogi inaspettati mi ha aperto una porta su quella che era la sua vita di allora, un'ingresso diretto al suo privato che ho varcato in punta di piedi quasi fosse un oltraggio. Non ho ancora letto tutte le sue opere,sebbene sia una scrittrice che amo da diversi anni: ero rimasta colpita dal suo modo di scrivere,per niente facile da leggere ed assimilare ma sicuramente geniale e leggendo questo libro sono rimasta affascinata anche dalla sua personalità e non vedo l'ora di poter leggere altre sue opere, questa volta conoscendo la passione,la sofferenza, il duro lavoro che La scrittrice ha posto in ognuna di quelle parole.

Νομίζω ότι είναι από εκείνες τις φορές που πιάνουν και εκδίδουν ό,τι βρουν στα συρτάρια των συγγραφέων. Από αυτές τις σελίδες βρήκα μία χρήσιμη συμβουλή, πάντως: με δικά μου λόγια, "Μην εκδόσεις τίποτα πριν τα τριάντα σου - γιατί χρειάζεσαι αυτά τα δέκα χρόνια, από τα είκοσι μέχρι τα τριάντα, για να γράφεις μόνο για 'σένα, για να βγάλεις όλες τις νεανικές ανοησίες που έχεις μέσα σου".

Dopo il diario, questa silloge di scritti selezionati per argomento. Non subisco rapimento, né trasporto emotivo, dalla lettura dei romanzi della Woolf. Non ancora, almeno. Ho già scritto che mi ripropongo la lettura in lingua originale; confido in una scoperta improvvisa e luminosa. Ma i suoi diari, le sue considerazioni sulla scrittura, le recensioni, le annotazioni di poetica, proseguono ad affascinarmi e a suscitare ammirazione. Suonano e risuonano nell'animo come frequenza etica. L'autonomia dal giudizio critico di moda, con cui V.W. governa il proprio romanzare è fonte di continua ispirazione. Singolare vedere quanto il giudizio altrui sia per lei importantissimo nei momenti di lucidità e lontananza dalla scrittura, là dove in gioco sia la sua reputazione di scrittrice affermata in un mondo di scrittori (uomini); ma quanto sia poi totalmente ininfluente là dove si tratti di assecondare la propria vocazione alla scrittura, il proprio stile, il proprio sentire e "dipingere" così originale. Un piacere quasi fisico. Una grandezza etica, appunto.

After the diary, this collection of writings selected by topic. I suffer no "kidnapping", no emotional transport, from reading Virginia Woolf’s novels. Not yet, at least. I noted already that I plan to read them in their original language; I still trust in a sudden, and bright, discovery. But her diaries, her thoughts on writing, her reviews, her annotations on poetry, continue to fascinate me and arouse my admiration. They sound, and resonate in my soul, as an ethical frequency. The autonomy from critics, with which V.W. rules her writing is a source of constant inspiration to me. It is odd to remark how other people’s judgment was very important to her in moments of lucidity, when away from writing, where her reputation as an affirmed lady-writer in a male-writers world was at stake; but how - on the contrary - that very judgement was totally irrelevant when she was tense to uphold her vocation to write, her own style, her own original way of "feeling and painting" on paper. An almost physical pleasure, to her. An ethical magnitude, in fact.

Με το που το τελείωσα σου γράφω γι’ αυτό. Τώρα που όλα είναι φρέσκα στο μυαλό μου.

Ένα πολύ μικρό βιβλιαράκι, το πρώτο της Virginia Woolf που διαβάζω και το χρειαζόμουν επειγόντως. Σε αυτό το γράμμα η Virginai Woolf προσπαθεί να μας μεταφέρει τις δυσκολίες ενός ποιητή. Την «κόντρα» ανάμεσα στην ποίηση και την πεζογραφία και τις δύσκολες στιγμές για την ποίηση εκείνη την εποχή. Αφιερώνει ένα αρκετά μεγάλο κομμάτι για να εξηγήσει τη σχέση της πεζογραφίας με την ποίηση και τα άσχημα σχόλια των πεζογράφων για τους ποιητές. Επίσης αναφέρει και μερικά παραδείγματα από ποιήματα των Ώστεν, Σπέντερ και Ντέυ Λιούις που αργότερα έγιναν πολύ πετυχημένοι. Μετά το «Γράμμα σε έναν νέο ποιητή» που ήταν ιδέα του Τζον Λέιμαν που ήταν ποιητής, ήταν να εκδοθεί άλλο ένα βιβλίο με τίτλο «Γράμμα σε μια γηραιά μυθιστοριογράφο» που θα το έγραφε ο Λέιμαν, αλλά δεν έγινε ποτέ.

Η γραφή της εξαιρετική που σε κάνει να μην τη χορταίνεις. Μετά από αυτό σίγουρα θα διαβάσω και κάποιο άλλο δικό της.

Consigli a un aspirante scrittore è un'antologia che racchiude alcuni passaggi tratti dai saggi di Virginia Woolf (Una stanza tutta per sé, tanto per citarne uno) ma soprattutto alcune pagine dei suoi diari.

I diari sono, in genere, testi molto particolari.
A primo impatto si potrebbe banalmente affermare che "non si può essere più sinceri con l'altro di quanto lo si è con se stessi". Ma, a pensarci bene, è davvero così? Veramente siamo in grado di raccontarci la verità senza alcuna manipolazione? Le attenuanti, i sensi di colpa mal celati, le esplosioni di rabbia contenute: nei diari, c'è la verità, ma c'è anche altro, molto altro.
Considerate ora il quaderno di una donna, di una scrittrice, di una lettrice: riuscite ad immaginare quanta materia grezza si nasconda all'interno di quelle pagine?

"L’unico consiglio che una persona può dare a un’altra sulla lettura è di non accettare consigli, di seguire il proprio istinto, di usare la propria testa, di arrivare alle proprie conclusioni. L'Indipendenza è la qualità più importante che un lettore possa avere."
Questa raccolta di saggi, appunti di diario e lettere ci offre un compendio abbastanza incisivo della ricerca intellettuale che caratterizza ogni minuto di vita della tormentata scrittrice. La Woolf vive DI e PER la Letteratura. Molte riflessioni le ho prese in prestito, altre son tutte mie. Non manca mai di stupirmi in positivo.

"Clearly therefore you have it in you to deal with a vast variety of subjects; it is only a temporary necessity that has shut you up in one room, alone, by yourself... All you need now is to stand at the window and let your rhythmical sense open and shut, open, and shut, boldly and freely... That perhaps is your task--to find the relation between things that seem incompatible yet have a mysterious affinity, to absorb every experience that comes your way fearlessly and saturate it completely so that your poem is a whole, not a fragment... But as I do not know what I mean by rhythm nor what I mean by life... and as I cannot tell a dactyl from an iambic... I will move on to safer ground..."

I came across Woolf's line "For heaven's sake, publish nothing before you are thirty" recently and wanted to read it in context. Well, it's Woolf. The letter has lucidity, wit, boldness, and humility that make me burn with envy to write just one thing as well as she did. It also has a looseness and freedom I needed at this juncture in my writing life. I'll probably be rereading it in a week and forcing poet friends to read and discuss it with me.

All that remains is for me to mention that the penultimate paragraph brought tears to my eyes and then whacked me over the head for being so precious. Who but Woolf could do that in just two consecutive sentences?

"رسالة إلى شاعر شاب" لـ فيرجينيا وولف،

قراءة مقالات وولف هي تجربة أشبه بمحادثة عميقة جدًا مع كاتبة حكيمة، جعلتني أعيد التفكير في كل شيء يخص الأدب!

هذا الكتاب ليس مجرد نصائح عادية، بل هو دعوة قوية جدًا للتحرر الفكري.

أكثر ما أثر فيني هو تركيزها على أن الاستقلال هو أهم جودة يمتلكها المبدع، حيث رفضت فكرة أن يضطر الكاتب لاتباع أسلوب معين لإرضاء الجمهور، حتى في زمنها القديم (حوالي ١٩٠٠) كان هناك رفض للتجديد لدرجة أنهم استغربوا شخصيات عادية! هي تصر على أن علينا أن نكتب بصدق كامل وبحرية مطلقة، وهذا هو جوهر الإبداع.

كما لفتت نظري لموضوع الشعر والنثر؛ بدلاً من أن تحسم الأمر، دعتني لأرى أي منهما يحمل القوة الأدبية الأكبر للتعبير عن حقيقتي، وهذا تحدٍ فكري رائع.

وأخيراً، أعجبتني رؤيتها للأدب العالمي، حيث أشادت بسحر الرواية الروسية لكنها نبهت بلطف إلى أن هذا الجمال قد يفقد بعضاً من وهجه عند الترجمة، مما يذكرنا بضرورة التمسك بلغتنا وصقلها. ببساطة، هذا الكتاب يقول لك: "كن أنت، ودع قلمك يعبر عنك بجرأة وحب".

أنصح به بشدة لكل من يبحث عن الإلهام والحرية في الكتابة! ✨

And the more sincere he is in keeping to the precise outline of the roses and cabbages of his private universe, the more he puzzles us who have agreed in a lazy spirit of compromise to see roses and cabbages as they are seen, more or less, by the twenty-six passengers on the outside of an omnibus. He strains to describe; we strain to see; he flickers his torch; we catch a flying gleam. It is exciting; it is stimulating; but is that a tree, we ask, or is it perhaps an old woman tying up her shoe in the gutter?”

Questo libro è adatto più che altro ai lettori accaniti, ma soprattutto agli appassionati di Virginia Woolf. Non avendo letto alcuno dei suoi romanzi, credo proprio di essermi persa il meglio di questo libro.

Ma sono una scrittrice, e questo libro fa venire una voglia matta di scrivere. E poi fa rimpiangere di non poter più scambiare due parole con lei: come ho detto, non la conosco come romanziera, e potrei anche non apprezzarla, ma si capisce da questi appunti che era una mente molto raffinata e molto ricca, che avrei davvero voluto conoscere.

Curioso vedere anche lei che annaspava tra visite indesiderate, che la distraevano dal suo lavoro, ma non sapeva come evitare. Come mi ci rispecchio! Molto tenero vedere il suo atteggiamento ambivalente sia verso la critica che verso il pubblico. Era dubbiosa verso le opinioni positive, o di una contentezza passeggera, e tormentata verso quelle negative, spesso sprezzante, ma d'istinto mortificata o irritata.
Infine, mi colpisce la libertà economica di cui un intellettuale poteva godere all'epoca, senza dover ricorrere a lavori di ripiego. E di conseguenza la libertà che poteva permettersi nei confronti delle autorità culturali, molto più vivaci e differenziate di adesso. Potevi campare scrivendo di letteratura e cultura su un giornale, e anche molto decorosamente. Certo, se eri Virginia. Ma...wow.

Il titolo è fuorviante. A prima vista sembra un manuale o una raccolta di consigli. Invece è prima di tutto una finestra sulla piena vita intellettuale di VW, che può regalarci molto più di una serie di precetti... forse, un piccolo frammento della sua acuta sensibilità.

poem about oneself than about any other subject.But what does one mean by "oneself"? Not the self that Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley have described—not the self that loves a woman, or that hates a tyrant, or that broods over the mystery of the world. No, the self that you are engaged in
describing is shut out from all that. It is a self that sits alone in the room at night with the blinds drawn. In other words the poet is much less interested in what we have in common than in what he has apart. ”

Não consigo classificar esta curta obra de zero a cinco e portanto deixo apenas uma citação. “Afinal, os anos que vão dos vinte aos trinta são anos (deixe-me referir de novo a sua carta) de intensa vida emocional. A chuva a cair, o vento a correr, alguém a passar — os sons e as visões mais banais têm o poder para precipitar uma pessoa, se bem me lembro, das alturas do êxtase para as profundezas do desespero. (…) Escreva então, agora que é jovem, disparates a eito. Seja tonto, seja sentimental, imite Shelley, imite Samuel Smiles; dê largas a todos os impulsos; cometa todos os erros de estilo, gramática, gosto e sintaxe; transborde; tropece; solte raiva, amor, sátira em todas as palavras que puder agarrar, force ou crie, em qualquer métrica, prosa, poesia ou em qualquer língua inventada que estiver à mão. Assim aprenderá a escrever.”

قرأت اكثر من كتاب من دار نشر خطوط، وكلها تشترك بإن ترجمتها معقدة بالاضافة الى ان السرد مزعج

Definirei questo libro come un prezioso scorcio nella vita di un’autrice che ho molto a cuore. Virginia Woolf mi ha fatta innamorare con il suo Orlando e mi tiene ancora saldamente in pugno. Qui ne vengono riportate lettere, annotazioni e pensieri che la rendono non più solo una figura del passato vissuta quasi un secolo fa ma la impariamo a conoscere pian piano. Ci diventa familiare come un’amica che ci racconta delle sue giornate e noi l’ascoltiamo volentieri.
Da aspirante scrittrice l’argomento trattato mi tocca da vicino, anche se questo non si può considerare un manuale di scrittura vero e proprio ma sono grata di poter aver accesso a una finestra sul mondo di Virginia Woolf che tanto ammiro.

هذا الكتاب الخفيف اللطيف صاحب الغلاف الرائع والمُبهج، تطرح به فرجينيا وولف، مجموعة مقالات عن الشِعر، والنثر، والكتابة، والقراءة، وعن الشِعر القديم، والشِعر الحديث، وتساؤلات حول: هل فعلًا توجد غيرة بين الشعراء؟ فترُد الرائعة فرجينيا بأسلوبها الجميل والطريف على جميع التساؤلات، وتتحدث كذلك الأمر عن الروائي السيء، وعن القارئ السيء، وهي لا تُجامل أبدًا.

- ولِمن لا يعرف من هي فرجينيا وولف، فرجينيا هي كاتبة وروائية وناقدة إنجليزية، تميزت كتاباتها في القرن العشرين، رفضت القواعد والقيود في كتاباتها، مُطلقة العنان لقلمها الجميل.

- الكتاب سلس وجميل، يمكنك قراءته في جلسة واحدة لشدّة جمال المواضيع التي يطرحُها، ولرقة وجمال أسلوب فرجينيا وولف.❤️

Bellino bellino. Ora, non voglio essere cattiva, ma io la Woolf comunque continuo a non tollerarla. In queste pagine di diario "già meglio", ma comunque meh, non andiamo molto d'accordo (la parte relativa allo scrivere è comunque meravigliosa.)

Il contenuto del libro è abbastanza interessante ma il titolo è ingannevole perché il saggio raccoglie le riflessioni della Woolf su alcuni scrittori e un diario in cui parla del suo lavoro di scrittrice.

عندما قرأت أثر علي الحائط لفرجينيا وولف شعرت كفريسة محاصرة بأفكار قلم متمرد ، تركت قصصها واقتربت أكثر لأفكارها و قرأت "غرفة للكتابة تخص المرء وحده " فانتابني نفس الشعور ،فطريقة تعبيرها أقرب لأنثى العنكبوت التي تنسج شباكها من الخارج وصولاً إلى المركز تتبعها فتجد نفسك فريسة أفكارها ، فلا وجود لطريق مباشر و واضح لأفكارها .
اقتربت أكثر فأكثر لأرائها من خلال مجموعة مقالات تحت عنوان "رسالة إلى شاعر شاب"ذكرني بعنوان رائعة راينر ماريا ريلكه "رسائل إلى شاعر شاب" ،تناولت المقالات أراء وولف بالنثر، الرواية الحديثة ،القراء‘ لكن الكتاب توقف كثيراُ عند الشعر ، فكما يقول الشاعر العراقي سركون بولص :-" لا أخفي عليكم أنني أنا أيضا أفكر أحيانا بماهية الشعر بخطورة القضية بنوع من التوبة كما هو حال الجميع"
لكن فيرجينيا تمتلك أراء جريئة إلى حد الاستفزاز بالشعر وكأنها أرادت أن تثير الجدل عمداً من مبدأ خالف تُعرف ، تهاجم الشعر ولا تخلو لغتها من الشاعرية ،
تطرح التساؤلات وتجيب عنها مراوغة بسخرية ، فتقول :_"لأن الشعر بالطبع لطالما انحاز إلى جانب الجمال؛و أصر على حقوق معينة مثل الإيقاع،الوزن ،القافية و الإلقاء الشعري ولم يهدف أبدأ لأن يستعمل في استخدامات الحياة العادية .وقد أخذ النثر على عاتقه كل الأعمال المضنية،أجاب على الرسائل،دفع الفواتير،حرر المقالات و ألقى الخطب ..." ثم تعود مرة أخري للحديث عن النثر"لكن،بإمكاننا أيضاً أن نسأل،هل النثر المصمم للتعامل مع أكثر الأمور تفاهة و تعقيداً فعلاً مناسب لأبسط الأشياء و أوسعها ؟ هل بإمكانه التعبير عنها ؟ أن يثير المشاعر المفاجئة التي تعترينا بتلك الشدة ؟ هل بإمكانه أن يغني مرثية ، أو أن يصنع ترنيمة حب ، أو أن يصرخ من الرعب ، أن يتغنى بوردة ، بعندليب ، أو بجمال الليل ؟ هل بإمكانه أن ينهل من منبع قلب موضوعه كما يفعل الشاعر ؟ لا أعتقد .." ,إذا ظننت أن فرجينيا غيرت رأيها فها هي تنهي حديثها بسخرية "فلذلك هو العقاب الذي يجب أن يتلقاه لاستغنائه عن التعويذات و الألغاز و القوافي و الأوزان ."
بالتأكيد لم يصل لفيرجيينا وولف كتاب قادة الفكر لطه حسين حيث يرى أن تاريخ اليونان الذي ترجع إليه الحضارة الانسانية الحديثة والذي يشترك مع الحضارة الاسلامية في أول مظاهر عهدهم ،فحياة البداوة في كليهما كانت قائمة على الشعر وحده ،تستطيع أن تبحث عن فلاسفتهم ،حكمائهم ،قادتهم ، ساستهم ومدبري أمورهم الاجتماعية فلا تجد إلا الشعراء .
فيرجينيا امرأة عملية تنظر للأمور أحياناً وليس دائماً بموضوعية ، عندما تقرأ وصفها للطيور والزهور و أوراق الخريف الجافة وصفها للسماء والطيور ، تنسي حماقتها وتُثقل بهموم وصراعات أبطالها و إن بدت لك طريقة انتحارها رومانسية فقد نفذتها بأكثر الطرق عملية أرتدت معطفها ،ملأته بالحجارة و ألقت نفسها بالنهر .

Questo piccolo libricino è una raccolta di lettere scritte da Virginia Woolf, il cui destinatario è John Lehmann.
La Woolf cerca di consolare e rispondere ai dilemmi di John circa la poesia, e la poca persistenza di questa nell'epoca moderna. Infatti John ha l'impressione che la poesia, col trascorrere degli anni stia perendo, svanendo e perdendo l'essenza fondamentale: la tipica unicità, paradossalmente parlando, dell'arte della parola. Ma Virginia con un atteggiamento materno e incoraggiante invita John a non avere il desiderio di pubblicare le proprie poesie solo per compiacere il pubblico, per raggiungere la fama e il successo, ma l'aspetto fondamentale di tale traguardo è conseguire la maturità emotiva e pratica per potersi mettere a nudo con la propria arte, la propria poesia.
La scrittrice dona a John una prospettiva nuova su cui riflettere: gli dice di guardare oltre sé stesso, di non cercarsi dentro bensì fuori, nei volti altrui, nei rumori e nei silenzi del mondo che lo circonda. La Woolf esorta il poeta a scrivere ciò che più gli preme, a custodire il proprio pensiero irripetibile e inimitabile e a non lasciarsi contaminare dalla folla, da ciò che essa desidera, brama, e soddisfare le loro esigenze letterarie. Fingere non è degli scrittori, sostiene la Woolf, però lo scrittore esaudendo le aspettative altrui 《Si traveste. Recita la sua parte》.
Inoltre Virginia afferma che il proprio mondo, quello interiore, che tanto ci appartiene, a cui i poeti sono minuziosamente legati, è l'estensione del mondo esteriore, il quale spesso sembra distante anni luce, lontano, diverso, freddo.
La Woolf considera che ciascun poeta continente in sé i poeti passati, coloro che continuiamo a ricordare e celebrare. Il poeta è il discendente dei grandi poeti passati che hanno scritto, forgiato le basi della letteratura più maestosa.
La parte accattivante di queste brevi lettere è l'interessantissima concezione innovativa della Woolf secondo cui la poesia è in continua evoluzione, e come tutte le cose mutabili, si adatta all'era in cui nasce, al periodo storico a cui appartiene, in cui cresce.
La grande Virginia Woolf invita gli scrittori a non avere fretta, a litigare e a riappacificarsi con le parole, con la complessità che ciascuna di esse contiene, con la difficoltà di saperle combinare e frantumare, dividerle.
In conclusione, il consiglio, l'incitazione più apprezzato della Woolf è quello che riguarda la necessità dei giovani poeti di mescolarsi tra la gente, di non rimanere soli con i propri pensieri, col proprio io immutabile. Lei reputa fondamentale 《Trovare il giusto rapporto tra il vostro io e il mondo esterno》. Tale piccolo romanzo racchiude le raccomandazioni, i suggerimenti fondamentali per ogni Giovane Poeta.

In this letter that Virginia writes passionately responding to “A young poet” she admits that prose writers fall to a trap of thinking that they know all about poetry and it’s rules, saying she does not possess a University education and thus it is impossible for her to distinguish between an iambic and a dactyl. Practice of prose breeds foolish jealousy and righteous indignation. Rhyme is not only childish but dishonest.

I think Virginia really tries to break down the difference between prose writers and poets surmising poetry is condensed and synthesized. As a prose writer she seemed to have taken time to understand somethings that pertain to poetry. She gives a caution as a prose writer on trying to do poetry “I would rather be a child and walk in a crocodile down a suburban path that write poetry”

I also felt like she highlighter the age of romanticism and realism as far as writing of poems was concerned. She admits that poetry is not dead. Very good advice to the young poet is to absorb from every one especially when reading poetry and not to fall into the trap of writing about self. Self offers no impediment. Poetry is almost always the result of forgetting oneself and finding relation in things that seem incompatible yet they have a mysterious affinity. Further advice to narrate single thoughts and not try contemplate landscapes and emotions within side by side. Virginia mentions several poets in the short letter namely : Shakespeare, Dryden, Tennyson, Pope, Chaucer, Crabbe, Byron, Robert Browning, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats…just to mention a few.

Old designs are so glibly copied that we are half inclined to think them original. What she was saying here was that there is basically nothing new in the world. The words of a poet echo on for a long time…and poets do not really die and thus do not belong to the society of nekrophils

The young poet is chastised to publish nothing before age thirty, he is told age twenty to age thirty is a time of emotional excitement. Most faults in poems have been exposed to the fierce light of publicity while still too young to stand the strain. Friends will pepper your manuscripts better that any reviewer out there.

On fame, the young poet is told greatest poets were anonymous.

رسالة إلى شاعر شاب لفرجينيا وولف.

فرجينيا وولف كاتبة إنجليزية.

أكثر من مرة أريد أن أشتري يوميات فرجينيا وولف ولكنني أتراجع بسبب ضخامة الكتاب؛ لأن لي تجربة في اليوميات الطويلة مثل يوميات كافكا أو يوميات سليفيا بلاث فإني أكون بطيئا جدا في القراءة مع كتب اليوميات الضخمة لاسيما إذا كانت لا تروقني.

المشكلة في كتب اليوميات أنك تمر عدة صفحات وأنت لا تقرأ شيئا ذا بال، ولكن يأتيك سطر شاعري عظيم يحمسّك في أن تكمل هذه اليوميات، ولذلك لم أحبب أن أدخل عالم فرجينيا غير الروائي إلا من كتاب يكون مؤثرا ومسددا.

لم يخب اختياري في هذا الكتاب (رسالة إلى شاعر شاب) وهو عبارة عن مقالات كتبتها فرجينيا في أوقات مختلفة وتم نشرها عبر صحف شتى.

من يقرأ هذا الكتاب يعلم لماذا المؤلفة هي أيقونة من أيقونات الأدب الحديث، ولماذا كل هذه الدراسات عنها وعن كتبها إلى الآن.

هذه المقالات تكشف جزء من التفكير الإبداعي منقطع النظير لدى فرجينيا وكيف هي تنظر للحياة وللشعر وللرواية وللمسرح، وكيف تعبّر عن نفسها وعن آرائها وكذلك عن الكتّاب الكبار بكل شفافية وبكل جرأة.

إنها لا تقول السائد ولا تروّج للشائع، إنها تقول فقط ما تؤمن به ولو كان هذا الإيمان هو عكس التيار.

اكتشفت من خلال المقالات أنها ناقدة عظيمة جدا، ومحللة تسبر الحياة بعين دقيقة مجهرية.

في هذا الكتاب تجد المؤلفة متجلية وحاضرة بشخصيتها الفريدة وآرائها القوية، فهي لا تهادن المجتمع الثقافي، ولا تتملق للقارئ، ولا تطلب ود أي أحد.

لقد كانت عالمة بالشعر كثيرا وتحدث بإسهاب بين الشعر والنثر وكانت تميل إلى تفضيل النثر بحكم أن الشعر في وقتها لم يكن مثل الشعر السابق كما تقول.

تقول: (لأن الشعر بالطبع لطالما انحاز إلى جانب الجمال، وأصرّ على حقوق معينة مثل الإيقاع، والوزن، والإلقاء الشعري. ولم يهدف أبدا لأن يُستعمل في استخدامات الحياة العادية. وقد أخذ النثر على عاتقه كل الأعمال المضنية؛ أجاب على الرسائل، ودفع الفواتير، وحرر المقالات، وألقى الخطب، ولبى احتياجات رجال الأعمال، والبقالة ورجال القانون والجنود والعساكر والفلّاحة.

أما الشعر فقد بقي بعيدا في منأى بين أيدي كهنته، وربما قد دفع ثمن هذا الانعزال بفقدانه القليل من المرونة).

أعتقد أن هذا الكلام ليس خاصا عن الشعر الإنجليزي فحسب بل نستطيع تعميمه على كل الشعر في الدنيا.

الكتاب من القطع المتوسط يقع في 152 صفحة من ترجمة إسكندر حمدان، وهو من إصدارات خطوط وظلال الصادر عام 2023م.

“I must give my reasons, which are bound to be foolish and certain also to cause pain to the large and highly respectable society of nekrophils (…) who much prefer death to life and are even now intoning the sacred and comfortable words, Keats is dead, Shelley is dead, Byron is dead. But it is late: nekrophily induces slumber; the old gentlemen have fallen asleep over their classics, and if what I am about to say takes a sanguine tone - and for my part I do not believe in poets dying (Keats, Shelley, Byron, are alive here in this room in you and you and you) - I can take comfort from the thought that my hoping will not disturb their snoring.”

“But how are you going to get out, into the world of other people? That is your problem now, (…) to find the right relationship (…) between the self that you know and the world outside. And it is a difficult problem. No living poet has, I think, altogether solved it. Moreover, there are a thousand voices prophesying despair. Science, they say, has made poetry impossible; there is no poetry in motor cars and wireless. And we have no religion. All is tumultuous and transitional. Therefore, so people say, there can be no relation between the poet and the present age. But surely that is nonsense. (…) All you need now is to stand at the window and let your rhythmical sense open and shut, open and shut, boldly and freely, until one thing melts in another, until the taxis are dancing with the daffodils, until a whole has been made from all these separate fragments.”

“But enough. I, at any rate, will not be nekrophilous. So long as you and you and you, venerable and ancient representatives of Sappho, Shakespeare, and Shelley are aged precisely twenty-three and propose - O enviable fate! - to spend the next fifty years of your lives in writing poetry, I refuse to think that the art is dead.”

While a fairly long letter, this is a very short book -- more of a pamphlet, really, in which Ms. Woolf responds to a letter _from_ a young poet (who may, for all I know, have actually existed) asking for help in composing his, well, poetry, and seems to fear that poetry is for all purposes dead.

Woolf begins by comparing poetry to prose, to the great benefit of both or neither -- she declares prose writers inferior, in a way, saying that she herself cannot tell an iamb from a dactyl; but then she goes into some detail about how much more trouble poets have compared to prose writers, especially with the modern (for the time) fashions in poetry where, it seems, it is quite impossible to say anything except about one's self. In the end, she encourages the young man to (my words; hers are, of course more elegant) universalize the "self" that he writes about, and concludes by suggesting that if a twenty-three-year-old proposes to spend the next fifty years of his life writing poetry, then surely it is not dead after all.

Sii sciocco, sentimentale; dai corda a ogni impulso; commetti ogni errore di stile, grammatica, gusto e sintassi; rivelati; inciampa; libera la rabbia, l'amore, la satira con qualsiasi parola tu riesca ad afferrare, costringi o crea, con qualunque metro, prosa, poesia, o linguaggio senza senso che ti capiti tra le mani. Così imparerai a scrivere".

Una lettera a un conoscente - un giovane poeta - che è anche un piccolo saggio sulla scrittura, ad opera di un'anima che ha l'inchiostro al posto del sangue nelle vene. La semplicità, la concretezza, la familiarità, la passione con cui la Woolf parla di quest'arte soffia sulla fiammella interiore che chiunque abbia anche solo immaginato di scrivere ha dentro, chi come un piccolo lume chi come un incendio inarrestabile. Chiudi il piccolo manoscritto (nemmeno 100 pagine) e ti rimane quella sensazione di aver piacevolmente chiacchierato di una passione comune con un caro amico. Quali meraviglie può operare una manciata di parole!

her passage on writing whatever nonsense you'd like while you're young is particularly moving. writing away without publishing a thing so that you will not feel the burning pressure of appealing to the public. rather focus on getting things out of your chest as they are. and feel, and create, and explore. and refine. and when you get to thirty, consider publishing.

my first experience with virginia woolf. i deeply enjoyed her romanticism and lyricism. reading an actual story of hers, rather than a letter, is pretty high on my reading goals.
