Finley Creek #7

Lost in the Wind

Rate this book
(Alternate cover edition of ASIN B07YBBP2QS.)

She had survived. She could survive. She would survive again.

After a brutal assault and cancer as a teenager, Dr. Nikkie Jean Netorre wouldn’t let herself be called a victim.

Nikkie Jean wasn’t a victim. She was a survivor.

Now a pediatric surgical resident at the best teaching hospital in Texas, Nikkie Jean knows there’s nothing she can’t make it through if she just keeps going. Even an F4 tornado bearing down on the hospital she loves so much.

Even falling for Dr. Caine Alvaro, Chief of Medicine at nearby Barratt County General Hospital.

Caine—identical twin to one of the few men Nikkie Jean half-way trusted. Caine, the one man she doesn’t fear. The one man she had almost let in. Almost. Just when he got close to her, they both retreated behind the walls they’d erected years ago to protect their hearts.

Caine’s past was just as painful as Nikkie Jean’s.

They were two wounded people surviving in a world of hurt.

As Nikkie Jean fights the instincts telling her to run from the one man she could love, and Caine fights the urges to protect the first woman to break through the shell around his heart after the loss of his wife two years earlier, the pain swirls around them like the storms bearing down on Finley Creek.

Until the only ones they can turn to are each other.

But actions have consequences—a lesson Nikkie Jean and Caine had learned long ago. Their actions have led to a very big consequence for both of them, and for Caine’s three young children.

Nikkie Jean and Caine have just changed everything for everyone.

But the actions of another physician are far more sinister—and Nikkie Jean just might become a victim once again.

Unless Caine could keep her safe from the one threat they couldn’t see coming.

Who is Calle Jaye Brookes?

Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).

Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?

In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!

Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.

She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.

She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.

They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.

I'm a sucker for romantic suspense that is on sale! This was another Bookbub deal where I failed to see it's in the middle of a series - although it's the first of the Disaster books. But this series is an ensemble - where a different set of characters is featured in each book so you don't really have to read the previous ones - but be prepared to be bombarded with a ton of names of characters from previous books so I did feel like I missed out a bit.

I liked that the main protagonist is a pediatric surgeon and would have loved to see her interact more with her patients. However, she was dealing with a lot of other problems as the plot moved along at a fast clip. Overall, a quick read with characters that I cared about.

The beginning of this book was extremely confusing. I put it down several times, but... it was also intriguing enough that I picked it back up. I loved the characters, especially Nikkie and Caine. I'm not sure what all the relationships are with other characters, but there are a lot of siblings involved on Caine's side of the family.

This is #7 in a series and that is definitely obvious. Suggest strongly that if you want to know what's going on, start at the beginning. I liked the way things turned out for the couple but there were an awful lot of threads left dangling. I'm not sure I liked it enough to read more. I might, just to see if those threads are tied up.

Overall, not a bad story. It has a HEA that satisfies for a romance. But buyer beware - the beginning is very confusing and you are definitely starting in the middle of what's going on.

Lost in the wind 💨

The next highly anticipated book in the Finley Creek series is here❣️I have been waiting for what feels like ages for this book, but let me tell you it is well worth the money 💰 The other thing I really love about these books, is how interconnected they all are with the characters and the families are ever evolving to include someone new, friend and/or family.

This story focuses more on Nikki Jean and Caine but it also has some more stories within the story, going on in the background. I’m not sure how Calle does it but her books are complex in nature but fascinating and I absolutely love them💕

I’m looking forward to Izzy and Annie’s stories next😍

Much too complicated

There were too many character and too many sub-plots. It was such a hard story to follow that I almost gave up and quit reading after the first few chapters. Will not read this author again.

I would be hard-pressed to say what I love most about the books in this series. Is it the alpha males? Or maybe the humor? Then there's the feisty women who don't wait around to be saved by said alpha males. Let's not forget the wonderful world building and cast of supporting characters. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it here!

Earlier i had read one of the PAVAD books and that tempted me to try this one.

I was really disappointed with this book. I kept waiting for it to get better. It kept getting worse.
There were many many things wrong with the book.

1. Apparently this book is part of a series but a standalone too. I have ready many books by many authors which fall under that category. Also it has not often been that I started at the beginning of the series.
In this book, there are too many references to each of the previous books and it is done really badly.
Nothing is really clarified and you feel that the author is expecting everyone to read the complete series in order.

2. It seems like its a small town . However almost every woman in the town has been abducted, raped, stalked or has had violent trauma committed to her and many of those apparently by doctors. How likely is that? Seems absolutely ridiculous.

3. The icing on the cake. The villain. He seems like an incompetent blumbering idiot. Almsot everything he does is unplanned , impulsive and foolish. In every single place he is introduced, he says he loves/worships his wife and then he lusts after all the women. He keeps embezzling/misaapropriating funds. His portrayal is completely contrary.

4.Nikkie Jeans trauma. There are a number of books where the protagonist has had a lot of terrible things happen to them and the way it is portrayed, you connect to them and feel deeply empathetic with them. Here the description, the way it is brought is not so. It is disjointed , in parts and then later repeated multiple times so much so that you feel like saying "Enough Already".

Reading the blurb, it really looked like there was a lot of potential and it would be quite an interesting read. However due to all the above reasons, the book was really not good. I just kept waiting for either parts of the book to get better or for the book to get over. Finally the latter happened.

I am not going back for more at least in this series

Kinda sad

When the book starts and all the characters are being explained as who belongs to who, it's very confusing!!!! Stick with it, MOST of it get cleared up eventually, but much later in the book. You gotta feel for these women and what they went through. An interesting family scenario that's very sad for a large group of siblings until it works out. I did enjoy it.

100 chapters in a 300+ pages. Soooo many people and background stories. Not a lot dedicated to the 2 main characters.

After starting this book, I realized I had read 4th book in this series. With the amount of unnecessary drama and too large of cast so I didn’t continue the series.
This book like the other is too dramatic and the keeping track of the cast is difficult. Though, I really love Caine, the father. He was wonderful with his kids. Nikki Jean was a spitfire hiding a traumatic past. They come together over comfort and then it’s a uphill battle to get them together. I would preferred more romance and less suspense.
I have to say, I appreciated the storyline related to medical insurance fraud, as I was once the Charge Auditor for a hospital. The author seemed to understand HIPAA, is a plus.

More a Romance

I began Lost in the Wind believing it was a thriller or a mystery at the very least. It is much more a romance. I also somehow had the impression it was the first book of a series when in actuality it is the ninth. I started somewhere in the middle I guess. Lost in the Wind is good with less than half dozen errors.
I'm really not capable of rating a romance because I just don't read them. Therefore the three stars. It probably deserves four.

Soap opera in book form

Good things - recovery and long term trauma effects discussed. Villain thoughts are presented where he tries to explain himself.

Bad things - so much drama! Twins separated, mom who sold multiple kids and now they are looking for each other, drugged victim saved by a tornado, Father issues and the father shows up after 13 years, surprise baby, wife who left and died tragically.

Marked a number of issues with wrong word selection. So much drama that we miss out on dialogue.

Romance level: one night stand. Closed door sex scene. Not as much lust as longing turned to love.

warning/triggers

I felt that the main subject of this book definitely needed a warning about the triggers in it to any women who had ever been assaulted. It didn’t and that’s why I gave it 3 stars.
The romance and family issues were strung out to amazing lengths, it was a bit much.
I won’t be reading more from this authour.
No swearing, blasphemy, open bedroom door, crudeness or vulgarity. Just triggers!

Excellent story but

There were a few editing mistakes that took a 5 star to a 4. Spoiler/example: towards the end the H gets shot, first it was his chest, then shoulder and by the time he got to the emergency it was his arm. Another character that got shot at first was 2 times and then became 3. A few places where some major thing was mentioned but nothing was previously said about it when it happened. On the whole a good story though and I would recommend.

What an enjoyable story. The characterization was good. There was a bit too many characters though... I was quite confused at times. And I was dissapointed with a very abrupt resolution. Why? I didn't want it to stop so sudden. There was suppose to be more, right? I found myself still thinking of the main characters, wanted to open the book and look for more. Nik and Caine was quite unique characters. Well done to the author.

This is the thirteenth of Brookes’s books that I have read. I enjoy the stories and love that characters from other books are threaded through the stories. Having said that, this can also be one of the confusing parts, especially when it has been a while since I read that character’s story.
Glad that I don’t live in any of these cities or work at these hospitals. Just about everybody has been kidnapped, held at gunpoint or been injured in a traumatic situation.

Amazing

Callie Brookes keeps knocking thwm.out of the ball park with the Finley Creek series. Another great book that builds the Daviss family further--hope.to eventually get a book that puts that family fully together and answers all the mystery. Brookes does an excellent job crafting stories with believable characters that overcome disabilities and adversity. Always full of action and plot twists, suspense and romance.

Dr. Netorre survived cancer and a brutal attack as a child--she didn't consider herself a victim but rather a survivor. Dr. Caine Alvaro survived both a rotten childhood and then a stint in the service. He was the director at a small hospital, a widow with 3 children. Revelations of families within two close hospitals and the inevitable meetings were painful. Strong characters, fast read. I enjoyed this series and will look for more. I rate this a 4.5

Who wouldn’t want to be Nikki Jean’s friend? She is a breath of life and joy wherever she goes. But there is hurt, deep and wide behind everything beautiful.

There also are unknown dangers. Mother Nature plays for keeps, but there worse horrors out there.

This story will grab your emotions in ways you never imagined. It digs deeply into people and their motivations.

I almost gave up on this book multiple times. I probably rated it higher than I should have because of the two main characters being so clueless about how they felt about each other. They could have passed for junior high children. Books like this have made me almost give up on women authors (and I am one). I don't know why, but I rate this one 4.5 stars.

Caine and Nikkei Jean were the main characters. I really try not to get reading a series book. This book was more like a romance then a mystery. I don’t like Romanesque. It also didn’t feel finished which was my own fault for not watching to stay away from series. I finished reading it although a friend told me if I don’t like a book by 50 pages, I should quit reading it.

Nikkie Jean

Nikkie Jean was a pediatric surgery who looked not much bigger than her patients. Her boss was a big, dark handsome man but his twin was even more handsome, at least to Nikkie Jean.

Romance

I thought this would be more mystery and drama than just prolonged romance waiting to happen. This is a series book and I was lost at first because I had not read any of the previous books. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more of I knew to read in order.
