Eric Hayes expected a quiet couple weeks of leave before reporting for SEAL training. He arrives at his family home to find the house already occupied by Liam—his younger brother—and Liam’s friends from college. Liam thinks Eric would be a good fit with Scott, a childhood friend, but Eric finds himself captivated by another houseguest. A.H. Shaw is a Ph.D. student, donating his spring break to helping Liam with an engineering project. Shaw’s snarky wit and lean good looks capture Eric’s attention from the first glance. Eric thrives on challenges, and Shaw is exactly what he’s looking for.
This is a short story that moves fast and introduces us to Eric and Shaw and a cast of supporting characters. Eric has only a short time before he goes off to SEAL training and, although it’s exactly what he wants, he knows that the commitment will be intense. Eric has a great relationship with his brother, Liam, and has to shift gears a bit when he realizes the house is fuller than he thought. But Shaw is there and Eric is captivated not only by how the guy looks, but how he feels when they are together getting to know each other.
The story starts off with Eric not sure what to do about his brother’s best friend, Scott. Scott has been crushing on Eric for years and now with a recent makeover, Scott is exactly the type of guy that will turn Eric’s head. But, he’s still not the one for Eric. For a shorter book, there was a lot of time focused on Scott for him not being a main character and it came across like Eric was more attracted to Scott than he was to Shaw. The chemistry was then a little off for me with Eric and Shaw.
It was nice for what it was but I would have liked to have gotten more of the weekend so that I could have really connected more with the relationship. There's a lot of potential but I didn't get as invested as I would have liked. It's a very short novella and that was certainly limiting.
I love my romance stories and I love how angst free this was. It's a fun little read with a lot of hottness thrown in and two not assholes who are just wonderful.
I loved the gentle humor and playful banter. The relationships between the characters, not just the romantic pairing, were interesting made the story vibrant.
