Marcall's Breakfast Cafe #1

Murder Most Eggscellent

Rate this book
A reluctant witch, with bad luck, gets swept up in a whirlwind of murder and conspiracy.

Charlotte Duffin is a reluctant, unlucky witch who inherits her grandmother’s breakfast cafe.

With nothing left to lose she reluctantly travels west to an idyllic mountain town to begin her new life. She’s grateful for her new friends: the cafe’s loyal chef Damien, and the town’s coffee shop owner, Miranda. And don’t forget the rabbits (who have a penchant for fresh parsley and town gossip) along with their cat pal who lives next door to round out her new life.

Yes, things are finally looking up for Charlotte, but then she trips over a dead body behind her cafe, and becomes the prime suspect. Adding to her woes, the lead detective on the case is an old high school flame.

Working against the clock, Charlotte, along with the help of her new friends (and much to the chagrin of the handsome, but churlish detective) must solve this tricky whodunit before she loses the cafe, and goes to jail for a murder she didn’t commit.

"Murder Most Eggscellent (Marcall's Breakfast Cafe #1)" by B.I. Skinner almost forgets it's a paranormal cozy mystery at times but remembers when it needs that aspect. Charlotte recently took over her grandmother's vegetarian breakfast cafe but is having some issues with the landlord and using her witchy powers. She also inherited her grandmother's talking rabbits, well they only can talk to those who are magical and they want to have hear them.

Charlotte's landlord ends up dead in her cafe. The detective on the case is her one time boyfriend from high school. Of course he's still super hunky and ready to try to fix his mistake of ending things with her. I get the sense that Charlotte has a big backstory that didn't get full flushed out like most first books in a nee cozy mystery series do. Also, this leads Charlotte to investigate because she's very untrusting of the cops to not accuse her of the crime.

Fun culinary cozy

Charlotte is running the cafe she inherited from her grandmother and finds a body outside her back door, her landlord.....the one she's suing. A little bit of paranormal is added to the tale.

Marcus and Marshall are an interesting new twist on an old theme.

A good read. Not the best but it follows themes in have read before but with an interesting new twist. The rabbits Marcus and Marshall. Loved their scatty, exuberant manner but unfortunately the humans need a bit more work. They still need a bit of tweaking to really take form. The plot is an old favourite - grandmother dies, leaves business to her and bodies start dropping like flies with her as the obvious culprit. Can she with her two besties find out what actually happened and get the information to the gorgeous detective before she's arrested. Throw in a soon to be expected wife, a girlfriend, a business partner and a property development company plus gambling and a lot of double dealing. If they can get the two rabbits to calm down maybe they can learn something or maybe Stumpy, the cat, will.
