Jessica Christ #7

The End is Her

Rate this book
Saving the nation is women's work.

Jessica McCloud finally understands what her Heavenly Father put her on this earth to do. Unfortunately, getting started is another matter entirely. And before she can convince God to make the necessary life changes, she needs to learn a little something about her own divine nature.

But when shyster incarnate Jimmy Dean gives her the end-all-be-all of unwanted birthday surprises, she'll have to pick up the pace. A lawsuit, a cross-country road trip, and a few bloody deaths later, she's wondering if she's the right woman for the job after all. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking...

Can Jessica complete her mission before Jimmy thwarts her for good?

The End is Her is the finale of the outrageous Jessica Christ series. If you like laugh-out-loud characters, irreverent satire, and blunt truths, then you'll love H. Claire Taylor's conclusion to this hilarious comedy.

“There are few things on this planet that you truly should do, but trying your best to love everyone is one of them, and you do it by making the choice that you will.”

“Even the impossible to love ones?”

“Especially them.”

While I can certainly imagine this interaction between Jesus and one of his friends, I can’t say that I expected to see it in a series that featured him as platonic BFFs with a gay media mogul, took a couple of detours to dream sex with angels, and is named after his sister, Jessica.
Yet, here we are.

This last installment of the Jessica Christ series is perhaps H.’s* finest writing to date. From a practical standpoint, this makes sense because seven books in, you’d expect an author to have such a finely tuned image of the world they’ve created. From a metaphorical standpoint, it had to be: after six books of setup, Jessica is precisely where she is supposed to be, whether she wanted to be there or not. Taylor had to bring her A-game to wrap up all the threads she’s got dangling out there.

Over the years we’ve seen Jessica confront evil on both the small scale and the temptations-of-Satan scale. We grew up with her, navigating friendships, her first period, high school football, college sororities, and small business ownership. We’ve been privy to her internal dialogue with her Father and seen her pull off some of the oddest miracles you could imagine. All through this, she has been drawn inexorably toward her ministry: to bring peace to one of the World’s Great Empires. And here we are.

While consistently full of Taylor’s wry humor, the opening quote is indicative of this novels’ more serious bent toward social justice themes. This should be unsurprising: Jesus and Jessica are half-siblings, after all. And while I imagine that when she plotted out the series, Taylor was not expecting to publish JC7 in the middle of the mainstream acceptance of the Black Lives Matter movement, I can’t help but think that that, along with three and a half long years of the Trump presidency, had some impact on the final product. Whatever the reason, I found this episode to be the most satisfying of all.

To be clear: Jimmy is still creating chaos, the White Light Church is as crazy as ever and Destinee McCloud is just as over the top as she always has been. Everything that I loved about the first six books is still here, just with that little something extra. It’s a great ending to a great series.

If you don’t mind a little blasphemy with your humor, this is a good enough series that even after buying the ebooks, we ordered paperbacks straight from the author to support her writing career.

Where do I even start with this review?
Read it. Yep, that’s it, just read it. Done.

Having got into this series late in the day, I was desperate to read the final instalment. I was extremely fortunate to receive an advance review copy, a bittersweet gift. And it was very much worth the wait.

If you have any semblance of a sense of humour, then this will appeal to you. And if you don’t laugh whilst reading this, then I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you’ve been kidding yourself. You never had a sense of humour and probably never had a soul either.

As you have come to expect from the earlier books in the series, there is superb character development throughout:
Jesus the ultimate hippy – his naïve humour will make you laugh, audibly and in public.
Jeremy the ultimate conspiracy theorist – or is he??
The Devil incarnate continuing to show her true colours.
Rex a feminist par excellence.
And let’s not forget the other supporting roles who chip in when least expected to remind you they still exist and have a significant part to play in the unwinding drama.
And we finally meet the Angel Gabriel.

There is some sublime writing here;
God showing a “human” side, one in particular when talking about dogs, “MERELY THE GOODEST OF BOYS AND DESERVED A PET”. It will make sense once you read the book.
And finally, some deity-strength smiting through a well-timed and humorous intervention with a superb literary angle. It truly is both perfectly fitting and beautifully funny – an act worthy of God, perhaps.
It is also great to see Jessica snap, even if only occasionally. I would happily have seen this more often, but I guess she is just a better human being than me.

And of course, running parallel, sometimes slightly in front, but never far behind, is Jimmy Dean. The well-crafted twists will have you both cringing and high fiving yourself (I cannot even hint at these on pain of a smite from the author).

Despite being fiction, it references the real world with wonderfully biting commentary on us all i.e. “long live the attention economy”. There is another subtle, ever present theme of feminism and empowerment, delivered at times through the unusual form of Rex. Added to a relevance with current affairs (BLM) and you couldn’t wish for a better mix of escapism and humour with just enough reality.

And who could forget the influence of boomerangs, not something I thought I would ever say. Find out what I mean by reading this for yourself. You will not regret it.

The End is Her is Number 7 in the Jessica Christ series by H. Claire Taylor, and is the final book in an extremely funny satirical series based on what the modern day messiah might feel like in current society.

The series starts, where you would expect, at The Beginning and ends with this book The End is Her. For those not familiar with the series, it follows Jessica Christ, the daughter of God (and much younger sister of Jesus) through her life from grade school all the way through to her early twenties. Along the way, Jessica encounters all of the struggles and challenges one would expect (and many you would never expect) being the only daughter of God. If it all sounds a bit blasphemous well, it is. But it’s not meant to be taken too seriously.

In The End is Her, we find Jessica McCloud continuing the struggle to fulfill her prophecy as she understands it from her Father (or is it Mother). Helping her along the way are her Brother (Jesus), her Mother (the other one), her friends, the homeless and even the Reverend Jimmy Dean. Jimmy Dean of course is also thwarting her every effort as usual, as is of course Satan aka Mrs. Thomas (Jessica’s former 3rd grade teacher).

This book (similar to the 6 previous books in the series) is impossible to put down, impossible not to embarrass yourself with if reading it in public (laugh out loud funny doesn’t really begin to cover it), is very well written and definitely does not disappoint!!

The End is Her - H. Claire Taylor

H. Claire Taylor may be the only person who can make off-page beastiality funny. Swinegate! Porcophiles!

This is a funny, fast-paced continuation of the Jessica Christ saga, though there are a few parts which, appropriately- given the subject matter - allow for church-like reflection. Mostly, it is a fiendishly funny, well written parodic commentary on faith, religion, cults, good versus evil, systemic racism, gender discrimination, feminism, and probably a dozen other issues/topics.

Even though all those issues were separately raised in previous books in the series, and even though they all thematically fit in Book 7, it may have been a bit ambitious to bring them all together in this one book. Sometimes it felt as if the reader was being fed 3 Thanksgiving dinners, when all he/she wanted was 2. But It must be hard to bring all the elements of a series together to come to a satisfactory close. The author accomplished this feat, so if overstuffing it a little is its only sin, then so be it (Amen?).

Jessica’s conversations with God (her father/mother/other) are the funniest, best parts of the book. Jesus/Joshua is a larger presence in this book than in previous ones. The combination of his kindness, human naïveté and his divine experience is very entertaining, and as it turns out, valuable to Jessica’s cause.

It’s the last book of the Jessica Christ series, but the author leaves some wiggle room for possible additions with subsequent characters. Or maybe the author is just letting the reader figure out where things will go. Either way, this book is an entertaining and satisfying conclusion.

We'll Miss You Jessica
As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end and this marks the end of H. Claire Taylor's Jessica Christ series. If you haven't read any of this series and you are a fan of fantasy, new takes on religions and the many joys/pitfalls of growing up in small town Texas, then I think you'll love this book. If however you are a religious zealot who can't take a humorous look at how and why people worship, you probably aren't the audience for this series! I love the sensitive badass that is Jessica and I was really thrilled with the relationship she had with her mother. Destinee really goes the distance for her daughter in this one and the many challenges and setbacks Jessica had to endure wore me out! Golly, how much can one girl take? But she perseveres with her cadre of friends and supporters, all well-crafted characters we've come to love (or hate). I was fortunate to receive an advance copy because I was one of many who pestered Claire for the chance to read the final book. But this one will be the most welcome addition to my collection. Thanks for another great read Mrs. Taylor!

Fantastic ending to an amazing story! Nestled in with the hilarious happenings are such great life lessons and messages! As I laughed (and cried a few times) through the book I felt camaraderie/commiseration with some characters, recognized people I know in some, aspired to be more like some (Guess who?), and still wanted to smite one or two. As much as I didn’t want the series to end, the conclusion did not disappoint! H. Claire Taylor’s writing style makes me laugh out loud and, unlike other books I’ve read, my husband actually asks me “What happened?” when I vocalize my emotions throughout this series! The story-line is good enough that he wants to know ‘the gist’ of it, but her writing is so clever that he’s happy for me to read him the section. That says a lot! The ONLY negative thing is that it’s over.
That all being said, onto the heavy… Without spoilers, I have to say that the timeliness of this culmination couldn’t be more perfect. It’s like the authoress had a premonition of our world today when she started the series. It gave me laughter, hope, and perspective in these crazy times.

I received an advanced copy so that I could review the book, and I was not disappointed. The author came through again. I really enjoyed this book. This was a great read- not only this book- but the whole series. If you are looking to dive into a great series that will make you laugh, make you feel, make you think, and is also an easy read on top of all that, you have found the right series.

I'm not a religious person, but I would totally join Jessica's Church. This book takes on a lot of heavy topics but mixes in some good laughs. There are a lot of problems in the world today and I enjoyed escaping into a world where there is hope for a better world tomorrow.

I also support the idea that we should all take responsibility to be kind at every opportunity for every person. Treat others the way they want to be treated in the kindest way possible.

So we come to the final installment of the Gospel of Jessica. Her previous trials have served to strengthen her resolve and prepare her for the ongoing challenges she still must face to accomplish her mission. Now we see her mature into the Christ she was destined to be. But enough of that serious talk.

There are many laugh out loud situations that deliver the snark and satire that makes this series so fun. Jimmy Dean and the White Light Church take their unconventional religious beliefs to absurdly hilarious levels. And you can’t miss the road trip with her brother Jesus who just doesn’t quite fit into the modern world. And the battle with Dolores continues. If you like irreverent humor you came to the right place.

I received an Advance Copy of this title in exchange for an impartial review.

This series has been a funny, irreverent delight and this final installment wraps things up beautifully. If you haven’t read the earlier volumes, do it. You wouldn’t want to miss this saga. We might not all have a publicist and a media specialist like the only begotten daughter of God, but we’re all muddling through life dealing with the challenges fate and Satan send our way. Like Jessica, we also have angels to help us if we know to look for them. And even though we realize God is kind of a flake, there is good work to be done.

This was a fitting ending to a wonderful series. It's bittersweet that Jessica's story is ending, but it also wonderful to see how it ends. All of your favorite characters, and least favorites too, have their arc's completed. I didn't find myself asking "whatever happened to so-and-so with this series. That is actually rather rare these days. I can't recommend highly enough the entire Jessica Christ series. I laughed so much throughout it. Perfect reading at any time.

Great work from a little girl from Texas

I started this series because the premise appealed to me. I continued it for humor, the insights into my mind that I had never formed into actual thinking points, and have finished by being entertained and enlightened. Thank you, Claire. I intend to keep expanding my horizons in my mind and actions.

She is good!

I have loved this entire series, and waited impatiently for this culmination. I have laughed my way through seven books while at the same time being forced to question things in society and look at some harsh realities. Claire is such a talented writer!

I loved all of the Jessica Christ books! The author poked fun at many of Christianity's problems while imagining what would happen if God had a daughter today. Christianity is not sacred, because it's merely a religion. I believe that Jesus is the savior of the world, and this series of 7 books didn't change my mind, it just made me laugh, a lot!

Claire Taylor continues to impress. This is the seventh book in her Jessica Christ series, so be sure to enjoy the earlier works before jumping into this one. I received an advance copy and am happy to share my review of this fun book.

Once again she has written a marvelous book in a delightful style that really engages the reader. Filled with really really really important issues presented so forcefully. She tells a story so well, drawing in the reader with laugh-out-loud scenes and tearful moments. All that, while she also does a fantastic job of portraying the inner landscape of her key characters with insight and heart.

Lots of absurdist humor and serious social commentary, so not for the less-than-openminded. But if you like sharp satire in the spirit of Mark Twain, this is a great concluding book for Taylor’s series.

Wonderful conclusion (??) to the series. I can't wait for Taylor's next opus!

Oh I’m gonna miss this.

I picked up this series and instantly snorted.
From book one to The End is Her- I have been so into the journey, invested in the characters and the storyline.
I’m honestly sad it’s over.
I love everything about this book, the message, the story, Jessica and Jimmy of course come full circle and I can’t help but think how wonderfully crafted this series was!

I’m going to miss the J crew, especially Jesus who always makes me laugh, and this unique, creative, and thought provoking world that was given to us.

Thank you so much for this series.
It will be a reread for years to come.

"Sometimes the wrong thing leads to the right one."
"What goes around comes around. Karma's a boomerang"

In this, the finale of the Jessica Christ series, Jessica is a full grown adult and should have learned from both her troubles and her triumphs, but she's still acting like the whole world is out to get her. There's a lawsuit to be settled, and a lot of other things going on, and her Father wants her to try to change the plant's idea of just who G-d is? Come on already...a 20-something can get enough people to believe this to have everyone believe that?

And so she and the "J-crew" go off to all parts of the country to see what people think of who G-d is. There's a lot of angry responses that just made me wonder if that's how people really actually see- or don't see- G-d. And our concept of the Almighty is exactly what we think it is, and no one should need to spell it out.

Somewhere buries in all the snark is a story I'm not so sure I liked.I've read the entire series and watched Jessica Christ, the daughter of G-d simply being a teenager and I've wanted to drop kick herinto next week at the end of each book. Her run ins with "the bad guys" have been fun, except they've been after things for themselves. In this book, the sad conclusion is that our work as G-d's children is never done. I applaud Ms. Taylor for her work, but I know many won't. Good 3/5

I've been reading this series for a few years, and was excited to read the final installment to see what exactly the endgame for Jessica McCloud Christ WAS, and it was a solid ending. Readers who've followed the series will like this book, which ties up all the loose ends for Jessica and her entourage of family, friends, and angels, as well as making some decently strident points about feminism, Texas, and American Christianity. Was a much longer book than I was expecting, but still a pretty quick read. 4 stars.

A good book, not THE good book

This series is well-written and has great characters, interesting, funny situations, and a unique plot. I have to admit that I almost gave up on the books somewhere in the middle when I realized that I liked every character but couldn't stand how helpless and willfully ignorant the main character was, but the story as so good I stuck with it and was happy I did. The MC got it all together by the last two books. The whole premise really is fascinating; I recommend trying it out.

I didn’t actually lol but that’s just me

I really enjoyed these books, I’m often sceptical about reviews that say “you’ll laugh your ass off” or similar things. However the series has a good hook and that’s what matters. I found I could invest in the characters and as a result found myself reading the entire series back to back. Hope you enjoy them too.
