To protect her incubus boyfriend, Irix, from the angels, Amber has agreed to journey to Hel and assist the humans there with their failing agricultural program. It's a project the botany major and half-elf/half-succubus would normally love, but the elves are stickers for genetic purity and consider her an abomination. Once in Hel, Amber must avoid the elves who would killer her, steer clear of demons who would love to add her to their collections, and somehow manage to create a Garden of Eden out of an arid desert. Human lives depend on her skills, and Irix's continued freedom depends on her honoring her contract with Satan.
Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.
She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.
Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.
This book was much better than I expected and did NOT put the lovely cover to shame.
... Not that I ever expect something mediocre from Debra Dunbar, but clearly I'm no elf; the restoration of the failing ecosystem in Libertytown, Dis didn't sound all that exciting. I was wrong: Agriculture has never been so ... stimulating ;-)
What I didn't expect was how much Ambers's sexual encounters would add to the story. Her incubus half was able to bring the hidden fantasies and unknown depths of a warmonger demon, a charming and loyal little Low and even Kirby the Mage to the surface in a way that was surprisingly... touching. (Seriously, the Lows need their own book. I'd take them into my human household if I could - as long as they didn't expect me to boink them!;-))
There was even a little spoiler regarding Andor, the future angelic babysitter in there. Looks like he's in for the time of his (love) life in the human world;-)
Pssst! *Whispers conspiratorically* According to reliable sources, certain blowjobs have consequences, and what happens in Hel sets the stage for some interesting, and super hot, encounters!
I can't wait (!!!) for Queen of the Damned! No seriously, I.Can't.Wait!
This short was great! Debra Dunbar never disappoints! I hope that some of the demon characters appear in longer works later, and I can't wait for more of this series. Plus, I chuckle every time I think about a demon gate at Columbia Mall. If you've ever been there at the holidays than you can believe that there's one there.
The Iblis has asked Amber for a favour, and Amber is willing to try to let her boyfriend come through the gates to earth unmolested. Amber has to help the freed humans plant viable agriculture for their rapidly changing environment.
This was a lot better read than the rest of the series to date. I enjoyed reading this one.
Amber has come a long way as a person since Demons of Desire. In this book she actually appears competent because she knows the limits of her powers. However, in this, she is also finding herself, as well. Until now she has still been playing with the humans the entire time. This time she is learning about her heritage, her birthplace. Amber has also finally, FINALLY, accepted her succubus side. It instantly makes for a better story.
While technically this is an installment of the Half Breed series, if you only read Half Breed you'd probably be pretty confused why this exists. Then again, I don't know why you would only be reading Half Breed when there is a superior series by the same author. Either way, this story belongs more in Imp than in Half Breed. All the buildup and the consequences of this story are in the Imp series so far, not the Half Breed series.
It’s nice to see Amber coming into her demon and elven powers. She has advanced so much in her skills since book one, and after the events of the last book, she seems to be getting a much better hold of her abilities and putting them to great use! It was interesting to see her be so physically open with other partners without the influence of Irix hanging over her head. She’s coming into her own and finding her own way, making peace with who she is and embracing herself.
It seems the elves have made a lot of headway when it comes to integrating themselves into the lives of the humans on earth, which we’re mostly hearing about in the peripherals of Amber’s story. This story is the first hint of how that integration has impacted Amber’s life directly. Luckily she can use it to her advantage in a small way, using it to get herself out of trouble a couple of times. She is one wily halfbreed.
Debra Dunbar is always good for number enjoyable read. Her previous two about Amber were very good. This one is interesting, but not as in-depth as the first two. To be honest, it is a bit rushed, lacking some of the normal philosophical depth Dunbar provides. It is still a worthy read, IMHO, especially if you want to read in order. Maybe I am being too harsh, as Dunbar is such an excellent writer on many levels, so I guess I expect too much from her. I did enjoy it and recommend it.
As Always I Wish Happy Reads to All from the Unapologetic Book Junkie!
This was a good Imp World novel. I was surprised it was short but I did enjoy the story. And I was happily surprised there was lex sex than the previous novels. It seemed better placed into the story line and worked better around her being a succubus. Amber must travel to Hel and throughout to help the humans survive off the land after the elves leave. She is finally learning to use her powers and not feel like a damsel in distress.
Amber made a bargain with Sam to help the free humans who remained in Hel in exchange for immunity for Irix and the time has come to pay up. I missed the interactions between Amber and Irix in this book but watching Amber explore the home she never knew was all kinds of fun!
Amber had promised to visit Libertytown to help the freed humans maintain the agriculture in the formerly forested Elven lands. Nothing really goes as planned in Hel. Amber's language and cultural barriers were overcome by a very useful Low demon assigned to protect her and translate the local languages. This book is less action packed, but still worth reading.
4 1/2 Bump it up because this is the first Half-breed that I really liked. She finally accepted her succubus status and offers her "services". I liked this better than her trying to fight it all the way. We get two encounters and it is not her love, in fact, he is not in this short less than 100 page novella.
Once again another excellent book. I can't wait for the next to come out. Please HURRY, with lots more so everyone who Loves your books has more to read of this series.
Great little story. Really filled in a lot of the culture overlooked by the Iblis series in both the demon and elf cultures. Made me like one of the, until now, auxiliary characters.
I enjoyed Amber's viewpoint on several different landscapes, to see the difference to what Samantha thought about them in the other books. Love Debra Dunbar!
I will start with the reading order; I tackled the Imp series by itself first (currently eight books) and then I went back and read the series with all the spin-off's and novellas fitted into the order they would belong. I suggest reading the complete compilation of the Imp series, Imp World and Half Breed in their full order because the latter two series fit inside the timeline.
Amber and Irix from the Imp series sneak off for a hot fling in Hawaii in the third book in the spin-off but not all is well in paradise. I have to say Amber's new found lack of inhibition had me practically rolling on the floor with laughter and the girly fight scenes were hysterical! I highly recommend this entire series - I really can't recommend it highly enough actually.
