Kids on Bikes: Roleplaying Game Core Rule Book

Rate this book
The door to the old house creaks open, the rust on the hinges groaning as you see the dust floating like spores in the air inside. By the faint light of your cheap flashlights, you see the stairs to the upper floor, its railings gnarled and broken like crooked teeth. Their curve makes the stairs seem almost like a hungry grin, and you wonder if their age will support your weight. Still, you must go in. The only question is who will go first?

Actually read the second edition which isn’t up here yet. Added some cool mechanics in addition to the original. A bit too much about boundaries in this edition. It was to the point that it treated the reader as a child in regard to interaction with peers which just came off as pedantic and overbearing. There seems to be no respect for the individual to be a decent human being and so had to make sure they know to check everyone’s comfortability with every detail. I get it. It was just a little over the top.

I love the concept, but the execution left me wanting.

First, the good stuff:

Its short, and its process makes it great as a backup. Character creation is quick and easy, the game mechanics are also quick and easy... actually too easy in my opinion (I love me some clever mechanics).

It has a cooperative setting creation system... or maybe schema is a better term for it, which makes a quick impromptu game much easier on the storyteller. I know I work much better when I have input from my players

********** ********** ********** ********** ********** **********

Now, my problems:

As a very short book I feel they spent WAY to much time on inclusion and player/storyteller safety. These are DAMN important things, but with only 74 pages I think 1 paragraph on it would be sufficient.

You can play an adult, which I think misses the beauty of the concept. I would have kept adults as strictly NPC's and had the Characters be children, per-teens, and teens.

I do not like the stats distribution. They have 4,6,8,10,12,& 20 – I think I would have gone with 6,8,8,10,10,& 12, letting the Player use one of their Strengths to increase a stat (Conversely if you want to be really bad at something you can drop a stat to gain a Strength).

Doesn't really have examples of antagonists. I think that's a big flaw. Stat blocks for cultists, police, dogs, even ghosts and some Semi-Urgent monsters would have been nice.

It's concept for Powered characters feels really wonky, like they were trying WAY to hard to emulate some very Strange Things. Its also very limiting.

Probably other niggling things, but I will end with this – I have a game mechanics fetish (shameful and embarrassing, but do you remember the game “Universe”? I LOVED the character creation in that game. Took hours and involved calculations best performed on a Cray... or better a Curta [I think I just had a... well 'moment' there ;) ]). Anyway one would think a game NAMED 'Kids on Bikes' would have at least a passing mention of some bonus/mechanic for using a Bike!

Neat little game that provides some very cool ideas for world building and cooperative storytelling.
I do feel that some of the crunch would benefit from some more depth and in a game that is called "Kids on Bikes" I don't really understand the inclusion of adults as playable characters but in the end let's just see how it actually plays first.

An OK-ish system wrapped in at least an equal number of pages of safety tools, capped off with a scenario you literally can't spoiler because it ends with "then you & the players collaboratively decide what else happens". Well ... all right, I guess.

Really liked the mechanics of the game, would change a myriad of things on the context, but is a great game and idea. Can't wait to test it.
