Cold Love #1

Cold As Puck

I was all in.

Down on one-knee. Love you forever. ALL in.
But I destroyed it.
Because that’s what I do.

The worst part…
I’d never see her look at me the same way.
In awe of the hockey god. The stud who made her breathless in bed.
The winner.

I was a champion.
I lost Game Seven and the team put me on a tight leash.
Now I’m back in my home town during the off-season.
Forced to do penance or I’m no longer the Dires’ goalie.

But Sophie’s still there and she’s not buying my acts of atonement.
Why would she?
I broke her heart.
She has no reason to forgive me, but I can’t skate this time.
I remember how it felt when we got under each other’s skin.
So does she.
Hot. Wicked. Hypnotic.
Maybe if I tell her the truth, we can start over.
Or, maybe I’ll lose her all over again.

This book is about Roman and Sophie who were together for 4 years and then forced to separate because his Russian mobster father made him break up with her. They were only separated for 4 years. I had a hard time taking this book seriously because for some reason the author went the route of making him a manwhore constantly dating models. Supposedly he was still in love with her, and he didn’t even question it. My question is not only why he immediately jumped into bed with someone else, but also why he would be so public? He posts pictures of these women on instagram etc being beyond public with them, basically rubbing her nose in it. All of their friends and family see this as well. He is rich and famous and she’s a little store owner back in his hometown where they were supposed to settle. If he “needed” to get laid, fine whatever I guess, but being so public about it made no sense. It was never resolved either. She brought it up once and he deflected. Completely unrealistic being that she took him back so fast. I also didn’t like that he specifically mentioned them when talking to her about people they “dated”. He was so in love with her that whole time and he wants her to believe it, but admittedly was out dating around. The author just did a bad job with this character. She should have tried a different story for the model loving manwhore who flaunts his life on Instagram. It didn’t fit for who she wanted him to be with Sophie. With Sophie she presented a loving man who would never voluntarily hurt her. These two men can’t exist in the same person, because they are a complete contradiction. 4 years isn’t that long, so for him to say he loves her but not only be sleeping with other women but DATING them makes me think he’s full of it and a pice of crap. I can’t respect him or wish for their happy ending. She deserved better than some selfish jerk she had to watch dating every super model in the world after he broke her heart and ruined all of their dreams.

Roman Sorrow and Sophie Fairchild met in the library after he collided into her and they discover they are both from the same hometown.

The first portion of the book incorporates time jumps between eight years...they’ve been broken up for four years and on their first date after their separation, without missing a beat, they sleep together.

He is a master at avoidance and steering the conversation away from anything personal and she meekly accepts. He decimated her feelings to the point four years later, she wept over the sight of him, rather than building an impenetrable wall to protect herself from further hurt.

Roman grew up in Russia under a tyrannical dictator, his abusive father. His mother was able to migrate and obtain a divorce on the condition of a buyout. His mother paid his father thousands of dollars per month.

His father and uncle are involved in a family business based on corruption and smuggling, they faked his death.

His father is once again blackmailing him to get access to Sophie’s father, a military intelligence officer.

It’s unclear if she’s been abstinent during the four years they were apart, he most certainly was not❗️

“You’ve never been that kind of girl to me. Never.”
“Then someone else has?” she tested. “I’ve seen your Insta,” she explained. “There have been a lot of girls after me.”
“Is that what we’re talking about? Who we’ve dated?” I didn’t want to have that conversation. That conversation meant she might open up about who she’d slept with. I knew it was a double-standard, but I couldn’t hear it. I couldn’t imagine her in bed with another man. I’d walked out and left my side of the bed wide open”.

This was a good read. Both Sophie and Roman came from the same town but never actually met until college. They began an intense relationship and things ended. Years later Roman comes back to town to deal with some issues. While here he and Sophie are given a second chance. Thankfully this time it works out fro them.

Great second chance romance. Roman and Sophie dated while they were in college and he ended up breaking her heart. Fast forward years later and they have both moved on, she is working on getting her business up and running and he is now a NHL goalie. After the last game of the season, he comes back home and he wants her. He has always wanted her. The chemistry between them is so hot but is it enough. Will he be able to finally have her after all these years or will she push him away in fear that he will just break her heart again?

This is my first time reading Violet Paige and I was really impressed with this book! I love a second chance romance when it's done well, and this book was a lot of fun to read. This is about Roman, a hockey player who is forced by his manager to return to his hometown for the summer after a devastating career loss. While there, he reconnects with his ex-fiance Sophie, who he hurt badly when they split 4 years ago. I was invested in Roman and Sophie as characters from the get-go; their chemistry and connection was incredible, and the steamy scenes were also super hot.

This gets a 4 stars rather than 5 because I felt like the suspense-esque plots were kind of silly and a little cheesy, especially because they were wrapped up so easily. I think a full commitment to either the dad plot OR the stalker plot would have been better, because overall I felt like it was time wasted that could have been focused on the really great romance.

As a romance, this gets 5 stars from me, but unfortunately the other stuff kind of drags this down, though I would totally recommend this book to lovers of second chance romance!

Hockey Romance

I enjoyed this book
This is a second chance romance serving a small town
Roman is a professional hockey player - the day after losing game 7 he wakes up in a hospital and is told he needs help so off he goes back to his home town
Sophie owns the only book store in her little town
Her friends drag her to the local bar to watch game 7 of the NHL finals after she swore she would never watch him play again after he left her four years ago.
Her father is an American intelligence officer
Roman's dad is mysterious and shady in Russia
Can these two find their way back to each other? Can Sophie forgive him for the pain he's caused her?

I liked this book but I also had some complex feelings about it. I found the storyline entertaining but I had issues with both the characters. It was kind of a shame because I did like these two as a couple and they did have some cute and sweet moments together. I just simply found them annoying. I so wish that Sophie had been a character with more backbone. Her waffling and basic lack of self-respect was a huge turn-off for me. Can you say Doormat? What she said and how she acted were often in direct opposition of the other. Now normally, I would feel bad for a heroine that was treated the way she was. Unfortunately, I was eventualy forced into the position of she doesn't care, so why should I? As for Roman, I felt he was so typical he was practically a cliché. From him I would have loved to see more emotion. I know his past and everything played a part in who and how he was but for me he came off too detached and I had a very tough time believing that his feelings for her were deep or meaningful. Add in that the story itself unfolds in such a way that left me wondering if she was simply his fallback plan or second choice. That for me was a fatal flaw in this book. I will be fair and say though that there are some good moment in this book and I felt it was a good read if not a great one. I am electing to post a truthful review.

Violet Paige heats things up with Cold As Puck (Cold Love #1). NHL Goalie, Roman Sorrow, is devastated after losing game seven of the Stanley Cup. He returns home to Penny Hill, Virginia for the summer. After eight years, he is reunited with the love of his life, Sophie Fairchild; the person whose heart he broke. This second-chance sports romance is suitable for adult readers.

Cold As Puck is a heartfelt and entertaining read. Roman has a lot of dimensions. He had a tragic past that haunts him. He has secrets, and he keeps things to himself. The only person who could ever center him was Sophie, and he gave her up. I love that these two get a second chance. Sophie is an admirable heroine. She was devastated when she lost Roman. She is hardworking and strong. Sophie and Roman have an intense chemistry.

Violet Paige does a fantastic job with this story. It is well-written and engaging. Cold As Puck has interesting twists and a strong plot. It is a solid foundation for the Cold Love series. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

This book starts fun and flirty. Then there is a crash of heartache and heartbreak before the hope of a second chance emerges. Plenty of obstacles are thrown their way in this adventure to find happiness. I was hooked from the first chapter. Once I started, I couldn't put it down.

I'm always a bit wary when I try something by a new author. I've been burned before for sure. But this book was a surprising delight! The writing is great, the story is original - really just a very good read. It sucked me in in the first chapter and kept me interested until the last page. There were no slow parts or boring, unnecessary add-ins; it was a well-written romantic story.

description

The book begins eight years ago, when Roman and Sophie meet in their college library. Roman had seen Sophie once before at a football game in the small town they went to high school in, but he hadn't been able to talk to her then. He quickly convinces her to go on a date with him, and thus begins their romance.

The first part of the book goes back and forth between their initial time together and present day, four years after their breakup. Roman is now a professional hockey player, and Sophie owns a book store in their small town. When Roman's team loses the Stanley Cup, he gets super drunk and gives the team a scare. They decide to make him go home to relax and spend time with a therapist to work through his issues. Eventually, he and Sophie reconnect and build their relationship anew. I don't want to give too many more details because there's a lot in this book that surprised me, and I don't want to ruin it!

description

For me, what really makes or breaks a romance is the heroine. I need someone that I can respect; someone strong. I need a heroine that I would want to befriend in real life. And Sophie is definitely that. She's strong and independent, but not bitchy or overbearing. I really appreciate how she didn't whine or cry or expect Roman to grovel to get her back. She went into their reconnect as a way to get closure for herself. She was totally in the driver's seat with it. And then, when she decided that she wanted their relationship to be more, she actually said something! A heroine that can act like an adult and say exactly what she wants!

description

I love how she didn't let the past drag them down. How she went into their new relationship with a clean slate. There was no jealously over other women or worry that Roman didn't mean what he said. She actually trusted him. Imagine that! No wonder Roman has always had a thing for this woman.

description

Now, I will say that this isn't much of a hockey romance. Besides the little bit at the beginning at the Stanley Cup, there's really very little in here that screams sports romance. I personally had no problem with that because the relationship building is just spot on. But if you're looking for the typical hockey romance troupe, you won't find it here. What you will find is a surprisingly good little second-chance romance with a bit of suspense and intrigue, and absolutely no childish behavior or unnecessary drama.

Quick summary for you: Small town, second chance sports romance with HEA.

Roman not only broke Sophie's heart 4 years ago when he got his chance in the NHL, he ruthlessly shattered it. Now he's back in their small town after a personal breakdown following a Stanley Cup game 7 loss. I'm struggling a bit with this review. The book had a lot of potential for a 2nd chance romance. The story line was a lot like an unfinished quilt. You have all the pieces laid out how you want to sew it together but the seams unravel as quickly as you sew them together. Everything was surface level.

I really wanted to feel the emotions; be transported into the story. I wanted it to happen but it never did. I still think there's potential. I'll even give the 2nd book in this series a chance. We'll see how it goes.

2nd chance small town romance

Roman and Sophie two college kids who meet and then turns out they’re from the same small town and begin their relationship until 4 years later Roman leaves her with no explanation and a lot of debt and money she spent on a future she thought they had . Now while I enjoyed the love story and how he had changed and the talks about mental health I felt like Roman needed to beg more and Sophie deserved a better explanation and more than just take me back

I loved that the third act problem wasn't cheating. This had the right amount of twists and turns for both characters. They both had character growth especially with the jump in timeline. The side characters could've had a bit more of a role to play but they still added to the story. The spice was great and the sprinkling of danger was a nice change in tropes. Both main characters communicated and you could feel their chemistry from the first few pages. Solid read.

I would have rated this four stars but it kind of wrapped up too quickly. Everything was well paced out until about 75% and then it just went lightening speed. Weird cause I still have questions. It bordered on insta love and I think relied too much on “past love”. I don’t think the characters got to know their current selves.

Didnt finish

Didnt finish coz i HATE it when the author has the guy break the girls heart as the beginning of the story yet before we even know what he did and how 4 years later shes still crying when she sees him how can she sleep with him STRAIGHT away what the hell??? No way not entertaining a book with such a weak female

I loved the plot and idea of the storyline but everything felt so rushed that it didn’t feel like we got to actually experience the character development. That all happened off page. There also were too many “villain” plot lines going on and so again they both felt rushed and no development of the story. It had good promise but felt too rushed in my opinion.

I expected more

The characters should have been more defined , it would have moved it out of light reading. Maybe just anti-climatic for me. Needed more depth. I will say, the hot scenes were pretty good!

I very much wanted to enjoy this book. But alas, it just wasn’t enough. Two possibly great story lines ended very anticlimactic. Pages and pages of build up, and poof. Over in just a few sentences.
There are better hockey/sport romance book series out there.

DNF at chapter 18.

I just couldn’t make myself like this book. I tried, and I just could get into it. I did not like Sophie. In my eyes she was just a push over. Roman was okay. He came off as an asshole at times, but that’s typically what I like so I guess that’s why he was tolerable.

I love this story. Roman did not really waste time getting Sophie back when the chance presented itself. Not that he went back home to get the girl. He was compelled to go home. The reason he let her go before was exposed, but it didn’t cause a hiccup in their reunion. I love it…

Russian mafia and Ice hockey

Roman really loved Sophie! And Sophie really loved Roman. What's the problem? Woman's dad, who's a Russian mafia boss who loves nothing more than money.

Great read!

I enjoyed this story of second chances. The lead characters were good. My only complaint is the problems were resolved in a few words. I did enjoy the steam!

Roman e Sophie erano innamorati pazzi.
L'amore riuscirà a sopravvivere?
