Summer is ending, and so are Daisy and Esther’s days at university (Susan still needs to finish medical school, of course). These last days together are worth their weight in gold, but soon it will be time for pomp, circumstance, and silly hats, as the girls head out into the world and face their futures!
I'm gonna cry! It's over guys! It's over! I mean I got Giant Days as Time Goes by but officially over. I'm gonna miss this. Hopefully As Time Goes By will be another series to continue because I can't say goodbye yet!
I put off reading this issue for far too long but on purpose. I knew this was it. I knew the trio graduated. I knew our story was coming to an end and I was going to be so sad and yet so happy. I know there is still one issue called As Time Goes By that wraps things up in the future but this was it for the main line story and issues. I can hope that there will be more issues of As Time Goes By but I do not think there has been any word on this as of right now (but I would read every single one and buy them all). Over all the issues I have grown to love each and every one of these characters, so I knew when it finally came to the last issue, it was going to be hard for me emotionally despite how great things end up for my favorite characters.
I do not want to give a spoilery summary of this issue because it is the last one and it wraps up so many things for our characters and our biggest journey, university! If you have not read this series yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. I started reading this series on Hoopla on a whim (so if your library offers Hoopla you may be able to check this out as well). After reading the first few volumes on Hoopla I ended up beginning to purchase this series (knowing how much I was loving it, I knew I wanted it in my library forever). In this final issue, we see some of our most beloved characters wrap up university, get to live together again (just for a very short time), deal with parents at graduation (and secret tattoos), and goodbyes. Additionally, at the very end we get a time hop to the future with Daisy and Susan (this is what leads into As Time Goes By.
This series and these characters will always be close to my heart, I will reread it many times. These characters and this series have been like coming home or a warm hug for me the past few years and I will miss it terribly. As I said above I hope As Time Goes By continues but I know it most likely will not. I still have the side issues to read like the one about going to Australia over Christmas break. I intend to read those ASAP and start a reread of the series as a whole as well.
I think my whole dissatisfaction with this issue is because a) I don't want this series to end and this is feeling rushed and b) do they really hold graduation ceremonies at the end of summer in England? Just too much of a disconnect being in the states. Also can someone remind me who the evil villainess is at the end? I totally forgot who she is...
I'm not crying, you are. I've been reading Giant Days for four years and I'm so not ready to say goodbye to Esther, Susan and Daisy. It's a good thing there's a special issue coming out!
This is a review for the entire series so keep that in mind!
I never considered myself the type to get involved in dramas and the goings on between various couples and their relationship status, etc etc. It's part of why I like comic books a lot in general because there's usually not a whole lot of focus on that sort of thing. But I read Giant Days anyway because it is definitely a comedy first and foremost and yeah, it's really good, and it really makes you grow attached to these characters and want to see them do well in life.
Giant Days follows three girls as they go to college together and are the best of friends. Daisy, Esther, and Susan. Daisy's cute, shy, and is having difficulty coming to terms with her sexuality. Esther's pretty, goth, and addicted to drama and being in relationships. Susan's blunt, sarcastic, but with a fierce streak of justice and cares deeply for her friends. The three of them are fantastic, play off one another for a fantastic 54 issues (Plus a handful of extras) and this is just the comic book equivalent of comfort food in my book.
There's no world-ending stakes, but you do grow to care so much for the characters that you are nevertheless gripped by the trials and tribulations they go through. I do also like how the series is split up into three years very effectively. Each "year" is 18 issues long, and with Issue 54 they kind of have to go their separate ways and it's like watching a very good series to completion. You just feel kind of empty inside after it's done because that's it. It has definitively ended, and there are no more stories to tell with these characters.
But read this. It's comedy, with a little bit of relationships and drama mixed in, but definitely worth reading. Easy five out of five for me.
A fitting final send-off, although the last year is bogged down a bit by the fact that Susan has effectively passed the better half of her character development and her smoking habit is never going to be portrayed as enough of a problem to warrant work, so mainly she's just supportive in the background. Unless there's a wedding. Esther and Daisy meanwhile have way more dynamic things going on, and I'm especially fond of Esther's arc as a liberal arts student prepared to hit the real world like a bird hitting glass. Esther is probably my favorite of the three at the end, but the honor of "the favorite" must've changed like five times. I also adore tipsy crew girl Nina who is gorgeous and sweet and god everything I want out of a woman. Guns, goodness, and really gREAT HAIR (okay sorry I'm not that shallow but she's SO fun and really lights up these last few episodes).
Also I know the age difference isn't actually that great but I didn't see why Daisy needed to get involved with any of the first years in res. It's just that she's an authority figure and I know it was mainly interest on the other party's part but come on. You don't need to pair up everyone, Esther demonstrates that pretty well.
I got recommended this when I was looking for relaxing, slice of life comics and since I am still in college this series didn't really fit my bill of relaxing but nevertheless it was nice to read. The stressful stuff was shown in a good comedic way but things were still a lot realistic. What I didn't like how almost every character wanted to be in a relationship and it was too sexual for my taste.
Esther's parents have come for her graduation, but are livid when they see her super weird tattoo. Ed and she graduate, and meet each other's parents. Daisy graduates and her adorable grandma shows up.
An issue like the end of college: Too soon and while you want to cherish the memories so much stuff happens in the meantime. I loved this one and although I would love to spend 50 more issues with them, it is time to go

Wow. I can't believe this main series is over. I've been reading it since college. I've graduated college, entered the real work force, and am currently on my way back to hopefully get my PhD. What a wild ride. I can't wait to read the spin-off series of them as graduates.
OK last issue I thought was the penultimate but this is for real the penultimate, and wow I knew I'd get emotional but I did not expect to get this emotional reading this. Absolutely beautiful stuff wrapping up a pretty much perfect comic series.
