Hajime Isayama (諫山 創 Isayama Hajime, born 1986) is a Japanese manga artist from Ōyama, Ōita. His first and currently ongoing serial, Attack on Titan, has sold over 22 million copies as of July 2013. He has mentioned Tsutomu Nihei, Ryōji Minagawa, Kentaro Miura, Hideki Arai and Tōru Mitsumine as artists he respects, but stated that the manga that had the biggest influence on him was ARMS.

Una completa maravilla. Emociones a mil.

Un tomo sobre sueños rotos y sin cumplirse, ah, y sobre sacrificios dolorosos y muy brutales. Definitivamente este tomo me ha parecido el mejor y mi favorito hasta el momento.

¡Spoilers!

Las cosas no están saliendo nada bien. Hay cuantiosas pérdidas y entre esas, han habido dos muertes que me han dolido y me han emocionado hasta la médula de lo épicas que han sido.

Por un lado está Erwin y su sueño tan personal que lo ha convertido en un egoísta pero que al final se redime sacrificándose por el bien de la humanidad. Y por el otro lado está Armin, que es sencillamente de esos personajes tan altruistas y demasiado buena gente como para no quererlo en algún momento. Un sacrificio a la altura de un sueño colectivo y no tan individual como el de Erwin.

En fin, que gran contraste entre ambos pero con los mismos desenlaces. ¡Excepcional! Me puso los pelos de punta.

P. D. Levi, te luciste. Pero no acabaste a tiempo con el maldito titán bestia, perdiste la oportunidad por confiarte.

Holy crap! That was a lot! If I'm being honest, the ending had me so shook, that I completely forgot to rate the book, or write a review; I didn't even mark it as read. It wasn't until I went to write the review for Volume 21 and 22 that I realized my mistake. Wowzers! I've always respected Armin, but now I respect him on a whole other level. It marks a big turning point in the series, making reading the next volume mandatory. With that said, onward we go.

One of the best volumes in the series so far!! Tons of action and emotional moments in this one. I've sort of already had most of this series spoiled for me because of social media but this series is still really enjoyable despite me knowing every character that dies.

Never did the odds look more against the humans fighting the war. Levi shines, Erwin is courage incarnate and Armin is glorious as well. So our only choice is to assume we are all expandable and work from there never felt more realistic

Qué tomo más catártico, coño. Por supuesto, estoy redondeando hacia arriba porque GR no me deja poner medias estrellas, pero menudo tomo. Al fin Isayama ha podido mostrar el músculo (no pun intended) argumental de esta serie, llevando el epiquismo a su enésima potencia. La carga suicida final es la mezcla perfecta entre la épica y la tragedia, y varios personajes importantes mueren como resultado. El autor no deja en ningún momento de mostrar la crueldad de su mundo (o de esa violencia entre razas a modo de pescadilla que se muerde la cola) y entiende que la épica jamás es verdaderamente épica, sino una triste consecuencia de buscar la victoria. Y, aun así, logra que la aparición de Levi me ponga muchísimo más cachondo de lo que esperaría tras semejante masacre porque, ya era hora, he comprendido la relación entre los personajes y la reacción de Levi ante la muerte de un amigo importante. De igual modo, llevando los paralelismos al límite, el sacrificio de Armin para con Eren es una genialidad, cerrando con un broche de oro el arco de un personaje que comenzó como un niño asustadizo.

No sé si los muertos seguirán muertos porque si algo me ha demostrado One Piece es que un personaje no muere hasta que su cadáver se muestre claramente, pero la verdad es que no importa porque se ha ganado igualmente el momento y sé seguro que la parte de Levi-Erwin no se va a tocar más. Confío en Isayama con esto último; Armin todavía puede dar mucho juego y su estado al final del tomo es ambiguo.

Vamos, que ha sido un volumen cargado de acción con toda la catarsis que merece una serie así. La crueldad permea a todas las acciones, los personajes actúan de formas más que lógicas y se profundiza en ellos, las estrategias están muy bien pensadas y los momentos épicos llegan con ese regusto amargo que hace que no pueda dejar de devorar capítulos. Ojalá el dibujo acompañara un poco mejor esas escenas, pero reconozcámoslo: Isayama ha mejorado mucho y transmite todo realmente bien con sus páginas dobles, su paneling reconocible (me flipan los flashbacks torcidos) y la tensión que es capaz de imprimir en unas pocas páginas. Un tomazo como la copa de un pino, y lo mejor es que todavía queda mucho por venir.

Story
It's getting harder to just read 4 chapters and stop. It helps that I'm largely caught up to what's being published in Japan. Things are getting pretty crazy at this point. Some major things happen in this volume.

With the second season of the show finally announced, I'm already looking forward to season 3. There is no way they can wrap things up in just two seasons, especially without the manga being finished yet. It's starting to feel awfully close though.

I can't wait until the next few chapters are published so I can read the next volume. I may have to resort to reading each chapter as it's published soon.

Artwork
The usual here. The art has improved dramatically from the earlier volumes, but I still find the action scenes really hard to follow and kind of messy. Not as bad as it used to be, but not nearly as improved as the still scenes.
