First in an enthralling Series of which I plan to read each, EVERY DYING HOUR introduces intrepid investigator Martin Aubrey, currently an insurance fraud investigator, but until 18 months ago a well-liked police detective. Set in 2043, in New Aberdeen Maryland, a near completely Artificial Intelligence operated futuristic city, this Series commences with an explosive beginning and the fully ratcheted tension never relents.

Aubrey is a fully realized and constantly evolving character and a great choice for protagonist. His intellect combined with intuition often leads him to successful conclusions unexpected by others; and despite danger to himself, he'll rush in "where angels fear to tread" to protect colleagues and prevent loss of life.

This is book one of the Martin Aubrey series and is set sometime in the future, when a revolutionary pill has been created which does away with people’s need to sleep. One of the main four things that people and animals need to continue their very survival, to eat, drink, reproduce and to sleep. Now sleep is a thing of the past for those that can afford this new pill, called Z or Zentransa. Employers are supplying their staff with this pill for increased workdays and productivity and some like the police force, to help solve more crimes hopefully.

The pill gives a twenty second high, called zoning, but some find it gives them intense pain, so not all take them if they can. It has made a very clear distinction between those who can afford the pill and those that can’t and so can only manage menial jobs, for little pay and struggling to survive. Not everyone in society is happy about this splitting of society based on haves and have nots. A group called One Front for the People (OFP) is building momentum and gaining followers. A bomb attack brings this group to the attention of the police and is witnessed by Martin Aubrey, a former cop, but now insurance claim investigator. He left the force some eighteen months ago after a disastrous event during a firefight left him responsible for a fellow officer’s death. He has lived with regret and deep depression since and this may be his way back to some redemption.

Martin is the only one to spot something odd in the footage about the first bomber and is asked to help out as a contractor for the police force in their investigation. More bombs are going off and now children are being targeted with something no-one can make sense of. They fall asleep, but then can’t be woken up. They are in a deep sleep, but not a coma. Both the bombings and the Boarding School Syndrome (BSS) as it is become known as, are all being claimed by the OFP. Martin is asked to join a couple of officers on the BSS part of the case and soon comes up with more questions than answers. There are killers out there, but Martin doesn’t know who he can trust, as nothing is actually what it seems. How these things are linked to the Z pill and the company and people behind its creation, is yet to be discovered, but all the children affected so far, are linked to those working in that company.

Who will be targeted next and whether Martin can redeem himself in some way is for you to find out. There is a violent group behind all these bombings and it seems the police chief is set on locating all the members of the OFP and Martin isn’t sure that these are one and the same foe. The local prison called the Keep and the creepy Tappers, as they are called, who are judge, jury and executioner for prisoners and have complete control over the prison and what happens there, leave problems for the BSS part of the case. Some of the people Martin wants to question are there, but prison visits are not something that happen. Stopping some of the people behind the violent events may not be enough. This book leaves questions and events still to be investigated in the following book and I look forward to reading it. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Trigger warnings for bombings, terrorism, violence, warfare, etc.
Actual rating: 4.5 stars

This was a really enjoyable read! I was intrigued by the central mystery of the bombings, and how it related to the boarding school sickness. Our main character is a likable every-man, whose had his share of hard knocks but is still a compassionate, heroic character. He's intelligent, perceptive, and willing to look past his own pre-conceived ideas to try and find the truth. I did feel at times the author made other characters look stupid to make him appear smarter (there are several observations that you can easily pick up on as the reader, but no other characters take note), but it wasn't too grating.

Our central villain is a little stereotypical, but still clever, so it was fun to watch him and the hero try to outsmart each other. There are a lot of mystery elements here left unresolved. Even though this is a series, I didn't expect the mystery to span multiple books, but we only uncover part of the conspiracy here, with the promise of more to follow. Honestly, I'm pleased, because I really like our protagonist and would be happy to follow him down this rabbithole.

Overall, this is a really solid story if you're into detective/police fiction and are open to a little sci-fi spice.

I guess the story of a disgraced policemen becoming a new hero is a genre unto itself. This is such a story. The characters fit neatly into stereotypes, but that adds to the charm of the story .Certainly the idea of a chemical that does away with the requirement for sleep opens the door to many new storylines. The plot is not too convoluted. There are two threads for the terrorists fighting the use of the sleep replacement because it is expensive and causes a separation between the users and the poor that creates problems. In this story, Aubrey is the catalyst for catching the terrorists who are sending out human bombs. The second front, the causing an illness in the children of the rich remains open for the next book in the series. I got a free copy of this book through Hidden Gems, and I probably will wait before buying the next in the series.

I recueved an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Intriguing story about a series of bombings, a chemical agent, and the activists who caused it. This story kept me constantly trying to figure out exactly how the purprtraitors would be caught. At times it gets pretty slow and can lose interest but the overall story is interesting and the world building helps to make an immersive experience. Not so much of a mystery as to who is doing these things, but the mystery is in the why and whether or not Martin will be able to stop them before the next event.

This is an interesting story but not quite SciFi. The author did create some interesting characters and the mystery plot was interesting, but he keeps slipping from the future to common day items for these cops and has trouble letting the reader help solve the puzzle. I hate books that end with an opening making you read the next one. Well I am afraid I won't read the next one. I did like the hero and followed him to the strange ending. Not my thing but if you like cop stories set just a bit far in the future, then the story is there.

With such a unique premise, this book’s plot really captures your interest from page one! The main character is both likeable AND engaging and I really look forward to seeing more from both the author AND from Martin Aubrey!

I loved the concept behind this book! The notion of a pill to do away with sleep was engaging and opened up a world of possibilities. That said, the story itself tended to lag behind this awesome concept :(

This is not my kind of book, I don't read sci-fi or any kind of futuristic stories. BUT I loved this. So many unexpected turns, it kept me gripped and the twist at the end was a real surprise.
I'd definitely recommend this one.

I was excited (and honored) to have been able to read an advance copy of this about six months ago, and I was thoroughly impressed. This is a compelling story - a gripping, exciting ride that is not only a great story on its own, but lays a solid foundation for the trilogy that it kicks off. It is much better than I would expect someone's first novel to be. This book reads fast. I enjoyed it very much.
