Doomy Prepper's Complete Guide: How to Survive Fifth Grade and the Apocalypse

Rate this book
Age: 7 and up | Grade: Second and up

An action-packed adventure perfect for reluctant readers!

The Prepper family is prepared for the end of the world. Or, at the very least, the end of toilet paper.

Doomy Prepper knows the rules.

1. Never trade sandwiches with Mikey Fuller. He always has tuna fish.

2. Don’t stare at Mrs. Nebula’s mole. You’ll turn into stone.

3. And never, ever talk about the lights.

When 11-year-old Doomy notices the mysterious lights above his town have changed color, he makes the mistake of telling his best friend, Peter. Now three other kids want to tag along and solve the mystery, too. The group is convinced the lights are the reason their classmates have all started disappearing. As soon as their teacher vanishes and a nasty substitute named Ms. Martian steps in, Doomy is sure something extraterrestrial is taking place.

A surprise field trip orchestrated by Ms. Martian has Doomy and his friends on an adventure they’ll never forget. Or survive. At least not without the help of some Prepper family tricks. And, of course, toilet paper.

Interesting premise. Definitely for the younger kids.

It was a cute middle grade book. My ten year old thought it was okay. Which could mean it was awesome or it could be mean it was okay. It’s hard to tell, she was holding a teddy bear.

It’s 1986 in Catskills, New York, and Doomy Prepper is a fifth-grade boy. Doomy has been seeing abnormal lights in the sky, and people in the community are disappearing. Doomy believes the strange lights are extraterrestrial and somehow connected to the disappearances. Doomy tells his best friend, Peter Peterson, about his thoughts, and Peter thinks Doomy is crazy.

A few other kids hear about Doomy’s suspicions, and Doomy convinces the group that the lights and disappearances are linked. When their teacher, Mrs. Nebula, disappears, a peculiar substitute, Ms. Martian, fills her spot and takes the class on an unplanned field trip. The trip leads them to a mysterious ship and its creature inhabitants. Will this determine where all the missing people are? Throughout the book, Doomy and his friends go on many adventures in an attempt to save the missing people and their town. Will they find them?

Opinion:
Doomy Prepper’s Complete Guide: How to Survive Fifth Grade and the Apocalypse is a very adventurous book. I was eager to read more of the story to figure out the secrets the story holds. Doomy is very likable as a character, because he is brave and helpful to his friends. I typically like more mature themes, but 9- to 11-year-old readers will find this to be a great chapter book to read because it is short, easy to understand, and presents a fun adventure that keeps the reader guessing.

The illustrations give the reader a good visual of what the scene looks like, which helps to imagine the events, characters, and settings. I’m excited that the author is coming out with more books in the series, because I definitely want to read more about Doomy’s adventures. Amie Borst is an excellent author, and I look forward to following her work.

Amie Borst created adventurous characters and a fun, action packed novel in Doomy Prepper’s Complete Guide: How to Survive Fifth Grade and the Apocalypse. Doomy Prepper is a logical fifth grader, whose family is actively prepared for any crisis, disaster, or the apocalypse. He has rules set in place to maneuver through his life in an organized fashion. One of those rules is to ignore the lights in the sky. No one knew what they are or where they came from. It draws Doomy’s curiosity when the lights change colors and flashing. The only one who will listen to him is his best friend, Peter, and a few of his classmates. Could the lights have anything to do with the people in his town who have come up missing?

Doomy Prepper’s Complete Guide: How to Survive Fifth Grade and the Apocalypse by Amie Borst is a refreshing read which middle school students will love. She organizes each chapter with three enticing rules, which gives clues to what Doomy will face in that chapter. Amie Borst uses a variety of characters and personalities. She shows kids that being different are acceptable. Each of the five students contributed what they could without ridicule. Overall, the author is creative and humorous, while keeping the story on track for the targeted age. I love how the author generates a complex web of mystery and suspense. The story twisted uniquely, surprising the reader in the direction it took. Another plus to this fantasy is Sean Bova’s illustrations. He brings the story alive with his inspiring art.

Fun 80s throwback setting!

The 1980s setting worked perfectly for this humorous, apocalyptic middle-grade novel. The 3-item lists that were used to launch each chapter provided a nice touch.

This is such a fun mystery for well, everyone who loves a great mystery. This is a mystery of the extraterrestrial kind if Doomy has this figured right. But he's no slough, he will investigate to find the facts. So much fun and a wonderful middle-grade type read. My kids loved this and want more!
