Revelations and More Questions
What I truly love about this series is the great creativity. I don’t recall any other book that is even remotely similar. Not that I’ve read all that many paranormal stories but this tale is truly one of a kind. The twins, Izara and Kain, learn a whole lot more about their powers but not near enough about how or why they have them. As a reader, I’m still in the dark about who is truly pulling the strings but I love taking this journey along with both Izzy and Kain. Each has their own first-person POV along with other POV’s in third person. It all adds up to a very solid and totally engrossing storyline.
Mysteries are plentiful as the second school year progresses. Izzy is charged with finding evidence against Choyce and it seems that he may be hiding something. Izzy’s relationship with Lee seems to be in jeopardy as Izzy needs to stay close with Choyce while Kain’s desires seem geared more toward the water fountains. Slick has penned a very creative storyline and awesome characters, which makes this a second installment Highly Recommended and I look forward to the conclusion of the story.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited to see that there was another book coming out in this series. I really enjoyed the first one, and I was curious to see what sort of chaos Kain and Izara were going to find themselves in this time around. Especially since the last book left me insanely curious about where this series was going.

I was definitely not disappointed in this one, either. I would even go so far to say as it was better than the first book, with the writing and the story improved all around. It did feel like the second book a series, with a lot of build and not a ton of action, but it wasn’t the worst case of second book syndrome that I’ve ever seen. And I am so stoked to see what happens to Kain and Izara next.

The Good Points About Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed:

The writing was so good for this book. It read more easily, and it was cleaner and the editing felt better, which I really enjoyed. The first one wasn’t that bad, but this was a fantastic improvement.

I love how the characters developed, especially in the area of their powers and how they respond to their powers. There were lots of cool things coming up, and exciting things happening, while it all kind of went crazy for everyone. It was great to see how Kain and Izara are growing into their abilities and how it’s affecting them as people.

Despite this feeling a lot like a second book, it was definitely a hard book to put down. Every time I thought that I was getting a little bored with the story, something crazy would go down and I’d be sucked right back in. The pacing is perfect throughout the story, and it definitely leaves you desperate to know what happens next.

I loved getting to see both Kain and Izara’s perspectives in this book, as well as some scenes from other characters. I’m not one to generally like changing points of view, but it worked really well for this story, and I felt it told the best rounded story.

This cover is a hundred times better than the last book. I love this cover, and it fits the story so well. Not that the last one didn’t. But this one’s better.

The Downsides of Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed:

A lot of things happened in this book, but we didn’t get any big crazy events like we did in the first book. Much of the story felt like it was building up to whatever is planned for the next book. It’s all interesting stuff happening, but it felt like the book just stopped, rather than had a solid ending.

I did find this book a little bit confusing, trying to keep track of all the information and what was happening to who, especially when it came to Choyce and all his history. This might have just been me, or maybe that it’s been a while since I read the last book, but I kept having to go back and see if I had missed something.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and I am so excited to see what sort of chaos and mayhem that Kain and Izara find themselves in next. This was a fun, easy, fast-paced read that keeps you hooked from page one until you’re closing the book and demanding more. If you like demons, urban fantasy, boarding schools, and books that include the 1900s, you’re likely love this series.

Intriguing characters that grab your attention quickly with the curse and powers that have fallen upon them. Ones they do not want. The pull of the moon is strong but the pull of powers once untied is stronger. Lets see how they all cope with continually having to feed on their prey. The choice of these victims it seems is out of their control. When they become the monster they lose a bit of themselves.

The Torvik twins, Izara ‘Izzy’ and Kain, seem to be cursed with the monsters they become. They have no control over them at first but that seems to be changing. The pressures of just being in school can be hard enough but when you throw in what they do when the moon comes out you can see their lives getting turned upside down. They have certain ideas of what they get up to when they no longer have control but when people start to hunt them down for what they are they know they need to be more careful. Everything seems to be interlinked from the past and present with what has happened and what will be. They are developing with their powers and soon getting ready for more craziness to appear. It seems that Tompkin’s School has a mystery of its own, one linked to everything.

Choyce seems to be a key link for the twins as he is the only one who knows what they are going through with being the same. His past plays a part in the future. You can see him getting closer to Izara and you are never quite sure what his motives are going to be but it seems its others that they need to worry about. Chaos is surely going to continue with many people playing a key part. Lee being one of them I feel. He is going to go a bit dark in the next one so will be interesting to see how he copes, or doesn’t as the case may be.

Structure and pacing was good and even though I haven’t read the first book I didn’t feel lost. Mainly because you get a few recaps with the visions and dreams Izzy and Kain have. Will be interesting to see how their powers develop further, whether they discover the mystery surrounding their school and how they are going to deal with what’s coming their way.

I received this ARC from the author to proof and for my honest review.

Beware Possible Spoilers
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

This book is about a brother and sister who have acquired powers they don't want, and don't understand. It's difficult for them to know who they can trust with some pretty dark secrets. They have enemies as well, and they don't know who they are, so their responses are often based on instinct. I love the premise.

The characters are diverse in personality, as are their friends. Izzy is bolder than her brother, and a 'take the bull by the horns', sort of personality. Her brother Kain, is more cautious. Both want to learn more about what they are dealing with. Choyce is a shady sort of gentleman from just before the Flapper era, and he needs something from them.

This book is considered 'stand alone', and I agree that it is, but you will get more into it, and capture the plot sooner if you read book 1, first. I had trouble following and understanding the beginning, due to not knowing previous events and characters. There were also times when I had trouble knowing what specific setting or time we were in, since there is some time-travel, as a few posts transferred as reminders from the first book. There is also a need for editing, as there are places with a word that doesn't belong, and other places with missing words. While the editing issues are minor, there are enough to momentarily kick you out of the moment.

While there is a satisfying ending, there is also a twist which is always fun. The next book is set-up from there, so there is more to look forward to.

*I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. And that is what I will do!*

I cannot say much about what happens in this book because it is a second book and I may spoil the first one ( you can read the review of the first one here ) but I can say that in Tompkin's School For the Extraordinary Departed Kain and Izara are closer to discovering what is happening in that school and what is happening with them.

In this book we have more points of view than just Izara's. In my opinion, that enrich the book as we understand more about this world and more about what the characters are feeling!
As I said in my last review, these books are much darker than what they seem to be and that gives to this serie a lot more of identity and uniqueness.
Compared with the first book, I feel the author's writing has evolved immensely, being now even more captivating and mysterious.

I consider this book an amazing continuation since the rhythm is kept (in fact is even more accelerated in certain parts) and keep us addicted. To be honest, I liked this book much more than the first! And that don't usually happens!

And what to say about that ending? It destroyed me and now I can't wait to read the next one! Arghhhh!

Without a doubt I recommend this book (and the first one) because they have a completely unique and different world.

My rating is 4,5 out of 5.

“Tompkin’s School for the Dearly Departed” is one of those cases where the sequel is even more riveting than the first book, and I applaud the author for not only making the story a true page-turner but bringing even better character development and intrigue into the mix. Izzy and Kain are in the thick of it once again as the new school year starts, and new challenges await them together with new dangers. Choyce and his determination to save his brother at any cost will put all three characters to the test and the consequences may be quite unpredictable. Flashbacks, time travel, new powers and new enemies - all this made me want to turn pages faster to find out how Izzy and Kain will manage to survive yet another year in a mysterious school. Great read! Looking forward to book 3.

Tompkin's School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2) by Tabi Slick is a YA paranormal/supernatural story. The story is unique and original and Tabi made me fall in love with her first book and drew me into a world that is different and enticing. Her cleverly casted words and crafted characters leave you wanting more. The journey with Izzy and Kain is fraught with mysteries and suspense and is truly one of a kind that is totally engrossing.

There is light and dark in all creatures

Kain and Izzy are twins. On the full moon they change into what I picture as a gargoyle, with a human face and feathered wings. Choyce also changes and is over 100 years old but looks to be 17. They also have pretty cool abilities, time travel being just one of them. Choyce lost his brother in 1911 and wants Izzy to help him go back to stop his brothers murder. This thing they all change into is pull to a specific person where they then remove the heart and leave the deaf body. Lee, who is Izzy's boyfriend, has a father on the police force and he is investigating all of these odd murders because his wife was one of them. The school they go to have something called nightwalkers who are trained to kill creatures like them.
I thought this book was quite original. The abilities for the twins were inventive. There are some editing errors. There are several questions, but maybe they can be answered by the next book.

Book Review – Alan Vandervoort

Tompkin’s School for the Dearly Departed
by Tabi Slick

The setting for book two of a trilogy is a boarding school in the heartland - an interesting location for the ultimate battle between good and evil. Within the walls are mysteries associated with the facility, administration, students, and years of history.

Twins, Izzy and Kain, are teenagers with a duel life – discovering the potential of their powers while students at the school. They balance an instinctual hunger along with relationships, classwork, and a horrifying secret. Quests of discovery include dreams, visions, and time travel – piecing together a complex puzzle of history, the origins of their power, and the possibility of changing historic events.

Within the pages is a clever use of irony in a parallel story – the performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Drama Club. The Shakespeare play is known for the tragic deaths caused by pure love compared to the School’s body count associated with pure evil.

The story has multiple layers to challenge the mind and increase the enjoyment for the reader – moving meticulously though normal life, supernatural, and time. Ms. Slick has an extraordinary ability to envision, and relate in words, the realm of the supernatural. Is this an actual spiritual connection with another world or evidence of a very talented storyteller? I’m guessing the latter.

The story highlights the dilemma of the twins and the reader - confronting what we are, what we are capable of becoming, and what influences to accept or reject. At Tompkin’s School, these are life and death circumstances. The moral question of natural instinct is evident: What is an acceptable amount of collateral damage in the quest to stop evil? The reader longs for a hero to emerge, but too many questions build the tension with intrigue. The questions also lead into book three.

This is the continuation of the story of Kain and Izara as they continue their lives and the consequences which go with them, but we start with them on their summer holidays, Izara has chosen to stay with Lee at his home near the school in Oklahoma, but Kain has decided to go to New York and stay with his Aunt.

While Kain is in New York, he has been working as an intern at a music magazine as a journalist, or more accurately, as an errand boy, he was hoping that his would mean he could have a rest from the telepathy, but instead, they are still connected, but because of the distance between them, it is only through their dreams and these are becoming more scary and realistic at the same time. They are also changing in the way they view them, they are seeing them from each other's points of view meaning that they don’t get as much rest as they would hope to. He has also been struggling to control his powers at the full moon.

Izara, however, has been enticed by her power and is finding it harder and harder to control it. The flames she can conjure are appearing more and more often and it is becoming harder to keep others from finding out about them. The more time that she spends with her friends, the harder she has to work to keep them and herself distracted from the truth.

As their powers become stronger and more unpredictable, their other hope of having time away from Choyce and his determination to get them to help him solve a problem didn’t happen either. He is intent on getting their help and gives them both a proposal, he will help them to get control of their powers, if they help him in return, so as they return to school and struggle to hide themselves from the teachers and the other students, Kain and Izara realise that they want the same thing but in different way, Izara wants to embrace what and who she is, but Kain only wants to do that so that he can live a normal life, graduate and continue his life.

The question is whether they can both get what they want and whether the price will be too high to pay. Will their dreams lead them to a solution and will they be able to make a deal to help each other, or will it all end in disaster?

The only way to find out is to go through the steps with them and make the same discoveries which they do.

'Tompkin's School for the Dearly Departed (Tompkin's School Trilogy Book 2)' by Tabi Slick
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5
Finished on July 17, 2017
GIVEN A FREE COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
$2.99 on Kindle | $16.95 in Paperback

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
Visions of the past, powers beyond belief, and a school that has been waiting for them for over a hundred years. Kain and Izara's abilities have advanced far greater than they ever imagined possible and it's all due to their new friend that has joined them...or is it?

This year will bring the Torvik twins closer to solving the mystery of who they are, why they have these powers, and even closer to unveiling the school's most haunting secret.

MY REVIEW:
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The second installment of the Tompkin's School Trilogy switches point of view to that of both Kain and Izzy. This is a bit jarring at first if you're reading them back-to-back like I did, but once I adjusted to it, I much preferred it to solely Izzy's. There were points throughout, though, where it was difficult to differentiate when the POV had switched, and it took me a few paragraphs, even a few pages, for me to realize whose eyes I was looking through.

This book is considered a stand-alone, but I think it's probably necessary to read the first to understand what is happening. Even reading the first book, I still don't fully understand what's going on, to be honest. I still don't fully grasp what these kids are, who I should be rooting for in this story, and why this is happening to them at all. I'm assuming all of this will be resolved in the third book, but after two rather long novels, I can't help but be a bit bamboozled at having more questions than answers.

The plot of this series is extremely creative, and the ending of this book is a lovely set up for the next.

Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2)
By Tabi Slick
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2) by Tabi Slick. It is a story that includes mystery, danger, and suspense. It is a book that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I loved reading about the characters of Kain and Izara. They are finding out how their powers are more advanced than they thought. They are also finding out how hard it is to control these new abilities. Will a newcomer to the school be able to help them? Can they trust this newcomer? What is in store for Kain and Izara? Read this book to find out. The author has woven a tale that is exciting and entertaining. Each page will have you trying to figure out just what is going on. The author has also done an amazing job of making the characters come alive on the pages. Some characters are helpful to Kain and Izara and others have an agenda. Who is telling the truth and who can be trusted? This is the second book in a trilogy and the stories are best read in order. I highly recommend reading this book and series and look forward to the next book.

Tompkin’s School For The Dearly Departed is the second book in the Supernatural Academy Trilogy by Tabi Slick. It is an original young adult paranormal academy story/series- with drama, mystery, action, adventure, suspense, and some fabulous world building.
After reading the first book in the series, I was hooked, and couldn’t wait to read what came next. We meet twins Izzy and Kain in Book One, two teenager who have some pretty unique abilities- but they seem to consider their powers to be more of a curse than a benefit. They still don’t fully understand their abilities- and are still looking for answers. With unknown enemies lurking, it makes knowing who to trust quite difficult. What ensues makes for a fantastic adventure!
I really recommend reading book one- so as not to feel ‘lost’ in this story. I think going into this book as a standalone could be a little confusing- so do yourself a favour and read Book #1 first.
Bring on the next book!

Thank you, Tabi Slick!

I came across the box set for this series through an ad and thought it looked intriguing, so I picked it up. This review is for book two.

Things get more interesting in Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed between the twins Izara and Kain, the secret society running the school, and an acquaintance/friend/enemy—frenemy?—love interest? from the past now in their present. Their powers are growing stronger, and neither Izzy nor Kain know what the right thing to do is—embrace them or fight against them, especially with so many conflicting things coming at them to pull them in different directions.

I enjoyed book two, maybe even more than book one. It keeps you guessing on who the enemies are, more of their past is revealed, secrets are getting harder to keep, and someone close is starting to put the pieces together.

Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed by Tabi Slick is the second book in the Supernatural Academy Trilogy. This boo does need to be read in order as it follows the same characters and their journey the whole way through.
This is a great addition to this series. For me I felt like it really built on everything that had happened in book 1 and showed a great development of the twins’ characters. The book was just as exciting and action packed as I found the first one to be and it was so easy to slip right back into this world – almost like you never left off.
This series is the first that I have read by this author but I am definitely enjoying her work so far. I am looking forward to reading book 3 and other work she has to offer.

I am so here for this series and loving it! I wasn’t sure if I would but I have been hooked from book one and even more entangled now after reading book two. I truly love the way the author spins the web of intrigue as we read and makes you wonder if you even know what is going on. I really enjoy the adventurous feel you get as you follow the twins Izzy and Kain in their second year of school. This brings new questions to light and even more intrigue as to what is happening to these two. I love the way the magic and supernatural pieces are an accentuation to the story, not the whole thing as this makes it seem just a bit more realistic. I am so excited to get my hands on the next book and see what adventures it will take us on next!

Tompkins School: For the dearly departed by Tabi Slick a fantasy of a four-star read. This is number two in the Supernatural Academy Series and it could be read as stand-alone, but honestly, I would advise you to read them in order as they do build the background and the characters. If I hadn’t read the first, I don’t think I would have enjoyed number two as much as I did. When you read this story, you are told it by the twins Kain and Izzy, you are there with them when they figure who to listen to, who to trust and who they shouldn’t. There is a lot going on with this story, a lot of jumping around, but as you read you are able to keep up and keep it all clear. This is a great story and I am eager to read the next instalment.

Good story, decent but disjointed character development, but

The proofreading, or lack thereof, took me out of the story too often. I think it was Stephen King who said - do not let the words take the reader out of the story. Too many grammatical errors (through versus threw comes to mind, as well as to, too, two) with homonyms kept taking me out of the story. I enjoyed the story, trying to guess who the villains might be, but eventually could not help but highlight where a proofreader would fix the prose. The writer should never be the proofreader - the story is your story, and you know it by heart, so the errors we all make creep in but are ignored because you know what the story really says.

This is the second book in this series which I highly suggest reading the previous book first. I enjoyed this paranormal, fantasy story just as much as the first one. This story is full of magic powers and limits are pushed. Kain and Izara are back in this story with a battle between good and evil. They are faced with a newcomer that they are not sure they should trust. They must save the school. Will they do it or will the things lurking in the dark get them first? I enjoy the twins, they are among my favorite characters. They really do make the story for me and keep me turning pages just to see what they will do next. This is a great story that I highly recommend.

Tompkin's School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2). By Tabi Slick.

I have been waiting for this book for what feels like ages. (About two months) I absolutely fell in love with this magical, dramatic fantasy trilogy. We pick back up with Izara and Kain’s story, them struggling to come to terms with there new lives at Tompkins Academy and what they have become, we see their confusion and pain throughout this book and all credit to the wonderful author Tabi Slick, Tabi is a wonderful fantasy author, you are pulled into this story as if you’re right there in the thick of it along for the ride. Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed by Tabi Slick is the second book in A Supernatural Academy Trilogy. The book continues from where book 1 left off, so I recommend reading book 1 first. The twins, Izara and Kain, are getting more control of their powers. The problem comes into with their ever-changing world who can they trust? This series got even better with this book. There is intrigue and adventure for the characters. I really enjoy how the characters are changing and adjusting to their situation and look forward to where they go in the future. This has great world building, as well. I look forward to reading more from this author and this series in the future.

This is my second book by Tabi Slick. Tompkin’s School: For the Dearly Departed is a story that includes mystery, danger, and suspense. You absolutely need to read these in order. Besides the fact that Tabi Slick’s ability to wordsmith is outstanding- you get to follow everything happening easier with reading in order. Izzy and Kain are in the middle of it once again as the new school year starts, and new challenges evolve for them as well as new dangers and different enemies. I recommend this trilogy if you like paranormal and even if you don’t- this storyline is fantastic and will get you turning the pages to see what’s happening next.

I highly recommend reading the first book in the Topkin’s School for the Dearly Departed. You will have the story of the twins Izzy and Kain. This is a YA Paranormal story that has drama, adventure, mystery, and suspense. The Twins have abilities that they are learning to use. They are still trying to find out if their abilities are a curse or a benefit. They are not sure who they can trust and look for answers to understanding their abilities. They are on an adventure but they are still new and there could be trouble coming their way. I highly recommend this book to get lost in an adventure of the twins Izzy and Kain.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. Well it is a new school year for the twins. They seem to be right in the middle of all that is going on. Izzy is trying to figure out more about why they have these powers and how to deal with them. Kain just wants to graduate and maybe going into the music business. The story is good and has picked up its pace from the first book. I am not sure what is completely going on but does not mean I am not enjoying the adventure right along side the characters. I have to see if book 3 will hold all the answers to the questions I still have right now. This book had less editing issues then book one. Next is book three. Yay.

I loved this book! This series continues to just improve. Second books in a series in general are bridges between the first and third. They don’t usually stand well on their own or surpass the original. I might have to say that I’m glad to find this is an exception to that generalization. Extremely well written, I am fascinated by the continued character development of the twins and this paranormal universe. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and series and am seriously on pins and needles waiting for the next installment.

Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2) by Tabi Slick was an interesting paranormal read. I really enjoyed the development of Kain and Izara throughout this book. I loved getting to see more of the history and the attention to detail was great for further world building. This was a really good continuation of the story about Kain and Izara. The story took a bit of a dark turn but I loved it. The twists and turns in this book kept me on the edge and I had no idea where it was going. Tabi Slick has created a winner and I look forward to reading the next installment in this series. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a good supernatural series.

Tompkin’s School: For The Dearly Departed (A Supernatural Academy Trilogy Book 2) by Tabi Slick is a good second book for this series. The Torvik twins are back at the Tompkins School for another year. A school specifically created to kill them and others like them, as near as they can tell. Quite a bit going on in this story, it’s fast paced and there are quite a few details and lots of interesting players. There is the big mystery and it will keep you guessing. Can’t wait for the next one.

Therefore when their lives are put in danger they are st they wits end until they connect thier dots with the past. Action, Adventure and time travel this book is for you.
