Rate this book
Improve your spoken French from home with 101 real-world conversations in simple, everyday French. Real French people don’t speak like your textbook… so it’s no wonder you feel unprepared when it’s your turn to speak! This book fixes that. For the first time, you’ll learn to speak French in the REAL world, with 101 authentic conversations in simple, spoken French, so you can become confident in the words, phrases and expressions you need to communicate like a local.
You’ll be transported into a real-world story that unfolds between six French characters, told by the people themselves in 101 authentic conversations. Over 15,000 words of real French, you’ll immerse yourself in a gripping French drama and get an education in natural French in the process. Here’s what you’ll get: 101 conversations in simple French, so you can learn the real French spoken in the street, understand spoken French with ease, and have French roll off your tongue more fluently Over 15,000 words of dialogue - an unparalleled resource that will immerse you in French, at a level you can understand, so you can learn real spoken French without getting lost or overwhelmed Real, daily spoken French throughout - it’s as if we held up a microphone and recorded the exact words coming out of people’s mouths - so you can learn the expressions that real people use on the street (not in textbooks). You’ll sound more authentic when you speak and make French-speaking friends more easily. Situational dialogues from typical daily circumstances, so you’ll prepare yourself to survive realistic French encounters, in shops and cafés, and make meeting people and making arrangements second nature Conversations that are carefully written to be accessible for beginners (A2-B1 on the CEFR), so you can start to learn from real, spoken conversations, even as a beginner, without having to go through the rollercoaster of difficult conversations with strangers Each conversation is limited to around 15 lines of dialogue (150 words), so you can get that crucial sense of achievement and motivation when you finish each conversation, and say “I actually understood all of that!” Word lists with English definitions in every chapter, so you can get instant translations of any difficult words and focus on reading and enjoying the stories rather than wasting time in a dictionary Summaries of each conversation which contextualise each dialogue, so you can easily follow the plot and enjoy the story without getting lost The story is set in France and includes expressions that are typical in standard French. However, since the conversations use mostly “neutral” French, you’ll find them useful whether you’re learning the French of Canada, North Africa or any other French-speaking community.
Created by Olly Richards, internationally-renowned language teacher and author, 101 Conversations in Real Spoken French gives you an education in real French that you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll be better prepared for using French in the real world, speak with more confidence, and take a giant leap towards fluency in French!

I really liked it, it’s exciting, action packed and I love the dialogues. I just wished there had been included a more abundant glossary list as there were many expressions that went me by. I understand that that’s the point with the story learning method, but the glossary list at the end of every chapter is too short, and it’s so annoying to have jot Down long sentences and expressions for future reference. But I will for sure read 101 simple conversations several times and listen to the audion at the same time. Olly Richards delivers quality products but i’m also a huge fan of Frederic Bibard and his language learning products, especially his short -story collections which are packed with expensive glossary lists.

Great book for French students

This book uses all of the verb tenses and contain lots of useful vocabulary for intermediate French learners. Definitely looking forward to more books in this series.

This doesn't quite fit the profile of other books that I'd rate five stars... but it was a good story in beginner French that I was able to read and understand. That's a great combo right now for me. 👍

I bought this one because my French conversation skill is much weaker than my reading and writing skills, and most stories will not give you the sentences you need for daily life. The format is a bit like the script of a play, with each line labelled with the character who is speaking it. There are many examples of useful conversational phrases, which I may revisit later.
However, the story was so engaging that I read most of the book in a single morning and forgot to pay attention to the language itself. This is an example of what should happen for good extensive reading material. I thoroughly recommend it for those wanting more easy-to-read French stories that are hard to put down. Books aimed at learners often need to balance learning objectives with entertainment value. It was obvious in some places that here was a conversation intended to be useful as a life skill rather than to advance the story and in a couple of places a repetition of phrases might be noticed. But the suspense of the story allowed these to exist without reducing the entertainment value of the book. I estimate that you get about 25,000 words of extensive reading practice.
I did spot a few errors. In a couple of spots the wrong character label was attached to a spoken part.

Having been reviving my minimal knowledge of French from many years ago when I did the subject at school through working on Duolingo, I found this book a great encouragement. It shows that you can read more French than you think once you have some basics, because so many words connect to English, and often you can guess a word from the context. I'm not so sure that I found it as useful for speaking French, though perhaps working through it a second time would give me confidence in that respect.

I preferred Olly Richards' Short Stories in French For Beginners. I felt the dialogue in 101 Conversations was uncomfortably awkward and sometimes just irritating. There is a little exposition at the beginning of each chapter. I thought the story was a bit dull also. 101 Conversations began with much simpler text than Short Stories, but at the end, I felt 101 Conversations was actually more advanced than the end of Short Stories.

I say all this as someone who took French classes in high school 20 years ago. I have only been working on my French again for the last five months.

Beginners give this a go!

A little French knowledge is needed, but this is great if you’re in the early stages of language learning. It gets a tad harder as it goes along but nothing overly difficult. The format of small paragraphs and dialogue, along with very short chapters makes this easy to read. Especially if you don’t want to get overwhelmed. The story was fun too and characters easily likeable.

Back in school working on a degree in French and have been trying to listen to, and read, more things in French. This was a great help. There were some sections I couldn't follow but I got the overall gist of the story just fine and really enjoyed it. My only issue is that they could have just made it a book with normal chapters instead of doing the 101 conversations bit. It kind of kept taking me out of the story.

Interesting and challenging for a beginner. I’m likely in the middle of working through A2 level in French currently. I understood the gist of the story, likely not every phrase, but I will have to read this again when I get more skilled, and I’m sure I’ll understand even more. It was perfect for extensive reading, comprehensible input, and lots of vocabulary introduction. I listened to the French audiobook while reading the kindle text, for maximum input!

This book was brilliant for me in my endeavour to restore my A level French from 60 years ago! I read all the 101 conversations in about four sittings, and actually found the storyline to be quite a page-turner, keeping me interested, motivated, and having fun. More please, Mr Richards - and I will definitely try your 101 intermediate conversations next.

I Could Understand

The story is well worth the time. I had fun with the challenge of reading right through without stopping to find out what some of the words were. I understood the story while reading and gained confidence as I read on.

Brillaint way to learn

This is a really good way to retain key words, phrases and grammar. Exciting stories that have a comprehensive glossary after each chapter. Highly recommended.

Fun to read

I enjoyed reading the very short chapters and the vocabulary at the end of each chapter was much appreciated! Good advice in the prologue to not look up each unfamiliar word, but to rely on context.

2.5 ⭐s. I thought this would be multiple common conversations in French. It is in fact one long story broken down into conversations. And this book has tons of errors that any native speaker or advanced student would instantly notice.

I assumed this would be a book of conversations in different scenarios but it's a story in dialogue. I listened to the audiobook, it's simple in the beginning for an intermediate learner and the language progresses as the mystery deepens. a fun listen overall!

Good practice with a fun story about stolen works of Monet. The conversations are short with enough context to get the gist, and enough new words to learn.
