A Highlander in a Pickup

Rate this book
A Highlander in a Pickup is the second book in award-winning author Laura Trentham's romantic comedy Highland Georgia series, full of love, laughs...and highlanders!

When a gorgeous new man—in a kilt—comes to town, life in Highland, Georgia will never be the same…

Iain Connors is the poster boy for the strong and silent type. Growing up a loner at Cairndow Castle in Scotland with only the cliffs and moors for company, it’s understood Iain will assume the mantle of Cairndow groundskeeper when his father is ready to relinquish it. But his stint in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces has opened up a whole new world—and now, rather than settle down, he accepts an invitation to travel to the States to take charge of the Highland Games. After all, he’s led men into battle, how hard can planning a party be?

Anna Maitland is ready to step up for her best friend Isabel Blackmoor, who can’t run the Games in their hometown this year. Surely Anna, a dance instructor with boundless energy, spirit, and charm, is up for the challenge? What she doesn’t anticipate is a man in a kilt who turns up claiming he’s the one in charge. What’s worse about this Iain? He’s so infuriatingly handsome that she can’t help but fantasize about him whispering sweet-nothings in her ear in his rumbly, sexy brogue. . .

Sweet, sassy, and steamy! Laura Trentham has written another delightful romance, a lovely Southern Scottish fusion. Welcome to Highland, Georgia where the men wear kilts and drink sweet tea. A charming small town with a strong Scottish vibe and an annual event that revitalized the town. An event that is in the hands of Anna this year. Anna knows how important this event is to the town and to her BFF who cannot run the event this year because she is over in Scotland having a baby. Anna is excited this is her chance to prove to everyone that she is more than capable, but she’s also a little nervous. When Iain shows up... tall, dark, moody, and in a kilt she is both intrigued and frustrated. And it does not help that she is in the middle of trying to wrangle a sheep while wearing a tutu. Oh let the games begin...The push and pull between Anna and Iain, Iain wanting to help and Anna wanting to prove that she can do everything by herself. There was definite chemistry between these two and it was fun watching them both try to fight it so fiercely. Then one day Anna finds out what Scotts (well at least Iain) wear under their kilts and can no longer deny her attraction.

Such a fun feel-good story that made me smile. Anna is someone you would want to be friends with, feisty, loyal, and fun! Iain was such a great guy, helpful, supportive, strong, and hot (not sure about the kilt though). The two of them together just made me feel good about life and love. All the secondary characters were so endearing and just added even more charm to the story. This is the second book in this series it worked perfectly fine as a standalone, but I will guarantee you’ll want to go back and read the first book and spend more time with these characters. I was so excited to see that there is a third book coming out in September, and even more excited to see who it is about!

Isabel's, best friend, Anna, is about to meet her own Hotty MacScottypants, aka the Highlander of her dreams . . . or is it her nightmares? Should be fun. I've got to admit that I loved the first book in this series. This one . . . not so much. Something was definitely missing this time around. Not sure what. Could be a bigger helping of snark was needed. Maybe it had a tad to much angst. The "I am Woman, hear me Roar" got old really fast. Or, all of them together made me not like this one as much.

Nightmare. That is exactly what Iain Connors was. Anna's worst nightmare. He was here in Highland, Georgia to take over "her" Highland Festival. Well, it just isn't going to happen. This Festival is her chance to prove she is more than capable and Iain is not going to take that away from her.

Stubborn. That is exactly what Anna Maitland was. Iain has come all the way from Castle Cairndow in Scotland as a favor to his best brined and his new wife to help put on the Highland Festival in Izzy's hometown and the woman won't let him do anything beyond tend the livestock. Well, Iain is nothing if not a patient man. The Festival is a lot to organize and she will need him to do more sooner or later. 3 1/2-Stars

I am loving Highland, GA and the wonderful Scottish men that are showing up there. Laura Trentham has me totally hooked on this series and I can’t wait until she releases another. The stories are fun and funny and just plain wonderful to read.

Iain and Anna were hysterical. Anna is uptight … Iain is the strong and silent type. Together they bring sexual tension to a whole new level. And, when they finally act on it, there’s an explosion. And then another, and then another … well, you get the picture.

Anna is in charge of the Highland games … or so she thinks. Iain is in charge of the Highland Games … or so he thinks. They have to learn to work together. He refuses to just be a caretaker for the animals and she refuses to listen to anything he has to say. But, when she finds out all that he’s helped with and the ideas he has for future celebrations, she starts taking some of his advice. She soon finds out that together, they just may put on Highland Games that will rival Isabel’s and her mom’s. But, all good things must come to end. And, it does, abruptly. Anna is left with a broken heart and Iain is back in Scotland miserable. What can they do but be miserable. There is nothing either of them can do. He has commitments in Scotland he doesn’t want to keep and she has aspirations of her own in Highland, GA. But, will the birth of a sweet little baby bring them together and will their true feelings finally be known.

Like I said, Highland, GA stole my heart. The characters, the stories and the love. Laura Trentham has brought both Georgia and Scotland alive in this series. You could hear the Scottish brogue and feel the heat of Georgia with every turn of the pages. And, she’s really trying to answer the age-old question of what’s work beneath the kilt. I guess you’ll have to read the story to find out just what Iain has hidden there. If you love funny, quirky characters and a story to go with them, you’ll enjoy the Highland, Georgia novels.

While I enjoyed the previous book in this series, I found this second book a leap above in every way.

Enemies-to-lovers trope-✔️
Broody, shy, and all-around swoon-worthy Scottish hero-✔️
Capable, but vulnerable heroine-✔️
Slow-burn romance-✔️
Shenanigans-✔️
Kilts-✔️

I can't say enough about how much I loved Iain and his characterization. Loved him! Anna was darling and had some great moments, but Iain carried the story for me. Again, the story is centered around the Highland Games in Highland, Georgia where Anna is sharing preparation duties with Iain. They butt heads only because Anna is reluctant to hand over any responsibility. As trust and respect builds, so does the sexy romance. Overall, a warm and witty romance with an exceptional hero.

A Highlander in a Pickup A Highland by Laura Trentham is book Two in the Highland Georgia Series. This is the story of Anna Maitland and Iain Connors. I have read the previous book, but felt you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Anna is taking over the Highland Games planning from her friend Isabel. So Anna is wanting to prove that she can do this and wants full control. Anna is someone who is taking over her mother dance studio so she always seems to feel pressure to prove herself. Iain has come down from Scotland to help with the Highland Games too but he finds that Anna isn't one for giving up control. But they do start to work together and finding that their feelings are becoming to hard to avoid. This was a fun read I though and really enjoyed it.

Well I didn’t think I could love the second book as much as the first, but I did this one! It’s made me realize I love the intense slow burn of hate to love romance. More like semi can’t stand to intrigued to falling in love. This story takes us on another adventure in Highland, Georgia where two different characters and worlds collide. And leaves the question “can you leave something you always know to be with the person who makes you feel most alive.”

Anna, Izzy from the first books best friend, is left to run the Highland challenges this year. And with it comes the help of Iaen, a sexy strapping Scotsman with secrets of his own. He’s not very good at talking to women so he comes off awkward at times and he infuriates Anna. That frustration turns to lusty fantasizing. But can anything good come from a guy who’s just staying a week... they bump head so much a long the way. Can Anna let down her guard to have help and can Iaen open up to showing feelings?

This book is the perfect push and pull in romance that had me hanging on and rooting for the underdog. And now I can’t wait for book 3, especially knowing who the main character is. Ugh Laura what have you done to me? You’ve turned me into a puddle that needs more!!

Sometimes you realize there is more to a person than you assume from appearances. Never was this truer than when Anna met Iain Connors!

A HIGHLANDER IN A PICKUP by Laura Trentham is a fun and sexy romance as the huge man-in-a-kilt and the fiery dance instructor take on the annual Highland Games festival, as well as each other! Anna has a need to prove herself in her small town of Highland, GA. Put in charge of the annual event is daunting and the handsome Highlander sent from Cairndow Castle is part thorn in her side and part star in her dreams.

Laura Trentham has created another quirky tale about love when you least expect it and Iain is the picture of Hot Scot, for sure! It’s his ability to soften Anna’s sharp edges that makes him even more sigh-worthy.

A fun romance filled with humorous moments, human mistakes and the magical chemistry of love!

In this second book of an already enjoyable series, Iain Connors heads to Highland, Georgia, to take over the planning and running of the Highland Games. In the first book in this series, A Highlander Walks Into a Bar, we already met a gorgeous man in kilts and also the Games. No worries, however, because these books do work as standalones, but when I can, I will read them in order.

Anna Maitland is now in charge of the game, because best friend Izzy (from book #1 in the series), is now unable in Scotland and is actually about to have a baby. But Anna soon knocks head with a gorgeous Scot - in kilts mind you - showing up ready to grab the reins. Now what Anna had in mind, so the two knock heads. But, on the inside, Anna as swooning. Could a man be THAT gorgeous?!

I enjoyed this second book in this series, as the plot, characters and settings were a true delight. I only came across this book because I have the third book, A Highlander is Coming to Town, for review. That was definitely to my benefit, because I was able to devour the first two books.

It is far more enjoyable for me to read books in order whenever possible. I felt like I was rewarded with a very good story, and was more than eager to read the next book.

Lovely read!
The protagonist of the second book of Highland, Georgia, Anna Maitland may come across as a bit abrasive and bitter at the beginning, but keep reading on and you will understand why and will warm up to her. Her father walked out on his family when she was a child, which explains Anna's trust issues. Iain Connor has a different dilemma - he is expected to continue the family tradition of serving as the Cairdraw castle caretaker, but his heart isn't in it.
The story had a good pace and kept me guessing what the main characters would decide. Of course, I knew they would end up together, but not where or how.
As entertaining as the first one, and possibly a bit more realistic, A Highlander in a pickup is a heartwarming story and will be appreciated by fans of the contemporary romance and rom-com genre.
Thank you to Edelweiss and St.Martin's Paperbacks for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

My review :

When a woman receives help for her new assigned task, will she comply or turn her back ...

I am mostly a reader of historical romance, and Mrs Laura Trentham writes historical romances, so explainer why my first read by her is a contemporary one’s.
Despite its being a romcom, with the Highland vibes, it has an undertone of a historical with the life Iain lived and his honor bound way to fulfill his promise.
I loved him, he is such a great and good man, maybe at first awkward but he becomes with ease a much sought after resident, and well respected which is well earned. He is kind and considerate, never the one to overstep. Why I was not very fond of Anna, by her rebuff and rejection of his help, she often hurt him.
For all his size, he is also a very unsure man, seing himself more as an oddity than a confident specimen.
Still, even after the many nays Anna tells him, he is there to step in if she needs be.
Anna lets her own insecurities take the path on everything else, but it gives her no right to be mean with Iain when he is here to help. She is so focused, she sees everyone as an opponent, when working hand in hand could have lifted a lot stress off her shoulders.
Because of her father’s desertion, she spent her life running away, always the one to break up because better hurt than be hurt.

Iain shakes everything she made herself believe, he is no player, he stands for her, assists her and never undermines her own work.
But their time together has a deadline so what after. I understand with a limited time, difficult to project oneself in the future and with her past history, it is worse.
I loved the final twist, as I was quite upset with Iain’s choice.
This is a cute tale of finding one’s place and purpose, 4 stars.

I received an advance copy through Edelweiss. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

I enjoyed my second visit to Highland, Georgia and to another Highland Games. This time around, Anna Maitland is running the Highland games because her friend Isabel Blackmoor, is in Scotland awaiting the birth of her first child. Anna is the local dance instructor who has assisted for years, so will surely be up to the task. Isabel's husband, Gareth, has enlisted the help of his best friend, Iain Connors, son of the Cairndow groundskeeper, to head to Highland and help out. Well, this is a romance after all, so we know there will be some chemistry between these two.

I really enjoyed how Anna's and Iain's relationship developed. Neither of them were looking for a relationship. Iain had to go back to Scotland and Anna was proud of running her own business and running for mayor of Highland. Planning the games didn't go as smoothly as Anna had hoped and there were many incidents that had me laughing out loud. Their banter was also fun and flirty, so it was no surprise that they ended up on a physical relationship. This was a well-paced and entertaining contemporary romance. The story was realistic with relatable characters, even prickly Anna, who eventually softens up. I enjoyed this story and don't hesitate to recommend it. I did a read/listen with this book. The audiobook was narrated by Siiri Scott. She did a nice job with expression and pacing. I enjoyed her performance. I was gifted a copy of the ebook upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

3.5⭐️ This book was like a Hallmark movie but with some spice. Did it have a Scotsman who was good at woodworking, caring for people and animals? Yep. Did it have a feisty dance instructor who was invested in her students and her small hometown? Yep. Were they forced to work together to put on a themed festival in a small highland themed town? Also yes. Not overly complicated or supper spicy just a fluffy book with a HEA.

The only things I might’ve liked were more scenes and conversations between characters showing their deepening bond or more interactions. However, given the page count I felt like the author accomplished a lot and managed to write a likable little couple you rooted for. There were one or two things I found annoying about the MCs but overall a quick happy read.

This was book 2 in the series, but I didn’t know that when I picked this book up randomly at the library. Despite not having read book one it was easy to follow along.

Generally I love this author's work, but this one just didn’t do it for me. First, let me share what I liked. As always, the descriptions were vivid and enticing, and I love the small Georgia town, as well as the glimpses at Scotland.

I also love Iain's character. Big muscular man, Scottish accent, AND a kilt? Yes please!!! He's also an honorable man who takes his promises to his father seriously. He's personable, kind and generous, and it takes no time for the people of Highlands, GA, to be eating out of his hand and seeking out his company. He's great with animals, children, seniors, everybody really, and his huge heart holds a nice helping of compassion. This guy is the whole package, and I adore every cell of him!

Now to the things that didn’t work for me.

As much as I loved Ian's character, I grew weary of being reminded he's not “classically handsome.” Tell me a few times so I get it, but then leave this big-hearted hero's physical characteristics to my imagination. Petty on my part? Possibly, but he also has a unique physical characteristic that's not easily forgotten.

Next, Anna is a shrew. She's antagonistic and quarrelsome through the majority of the book, and there just wasn’t enough of a convincing change to redeem her cantankerous character for me. It wouldn't have been too difficult to make her endearing to me. She has some good qualities I would have liked to see more of those, but as she is, she never won me over.

And the last thing that absolutely, positively did not work for me is bringing politics into the story. It’s only a hint, but it’s a hint too much. I read to escape real life and don’t appreciate anything that even hints at what an author's stance on today's political scene may be when I'm reading a romance. We're inundated with that stuff every day, so it would be nice if there was one place, just one place we could depend on being able to escape it. This is a deal breaker for me. I could have forgiven Anna's character and left a more positive review, but I can’t get past the abrupt shove back into the real world during my escape.

So, you have my impression and can make a decision yourself about this book. If these things aren’t an issue for you or you can overlook them, you’ll certainly enjoy this book. Otherwise, I recommend you check out some other titles by this author rather than spending your time and money on this one.

It was pretty much at turtle speed for the first 65% of the book with nothing happening except for lots of pushing and pulling and both main characters internalizing all their insecurities. It sped up like the hare to the rushed finish and we’re finally at the mildly intriguing epilogue which is essentially a teaser to the upcoming book featuring Holt and a Scottish singer. I’ll probably still read it to complete the series but this is a step down from the previous book and not up to par with the author’s other ongoing military romance series which I love.

This is the second installment in this series and even if you didn't read the first book (why didn't you!) you will not be lost with this one. Anna Maitland, the local dance teacher, is tasked with planning the Highland games this year since her BFF is in Scotland on bedrest at the end of her pregnancy. Since she is not able to be there she sent Anna a helper in the form of a man who is rugged and gorgeous and wears a kilt like he is made for it (and he is). Iain Connors is fresh from Her Majesty's Service and he was supposed to take over for his father as Cairndow's caretaker but when he was needed in Georgia he readily agreed to help. Anna is NOT thrilled to find him in Anna's house nor does she want his help. These two clash but where there is smoke there certainly is fire in the form of chemistry and these two have it in spades. Watching them come together was fantastic! Will they survive after the games or will that be the end of it? Make sure you read all the way to the end. This one is a must read and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

3.5 stars rounded up.

Iain Connors is rather shy and not great with words, in part due to his unconventional and largely solitary upbringing on the grounds of a Scottish castle. Now that his service in Her Majesty's Army is over, Iain wants to explore his options and decide what to do with his life, even though it is understood by his family and friends that he'll take over his father's position as groundskeeper at Cairndow Castle upon his retirement. But Iain isn't quite ready to settle into that routine so when his friend asks him to go to Georgia, USA, to help plan a Highland festival, Iain accepts, sure it can't be more difficult than leading men in the army.

Energetic dance instructor Anna Maitland is happy to step in and plan the Highland Festival that is a tradition in her hometown. She's used to wrangling children so how hard could it be? She's just not expecting the handsome highlander who shows up to take charge. Even worse, the man is undeniably attractive and Anna is not willing to relinquish control of the planning to him, even if she could use some help, and she certainly isn't planning to explore her attraction to him. After all, he's leaving soon, so there would be no point in exploring any connection that might exist between them.

I liked Anna's character in the previous book and was excited for her story, but her insecurities and fear that everyone will leave her, while understandable, manifested in her being ridiculously judgmental of and unnecessarily hateful and demeaning to Iain. Multiple times when he is being nice to her she's deliberately catty by willfully misinterpreting his words. She may be insecure, but she's popular and familiar enough with men to know the difference, especially after she learns that Iain isn't good with words. I think everyone has the desire to protect themselves from hurt, but much of Anna's behavior and dialogue was just immature and made me dislike her. By the time she started acting like she had some sense, it was a bit late for me to really like her. Iain was charming in his gruff awkwardness, but he also made some questionable decisions that took that awkwardness perhaps too far, although he did make up for it.

As with the previous book, there were some supposed southernisms that didn't ring true for me as a southerner myself, but perhaps things are different in the deeper south. Overall, I enjoyed this story and will continue with this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This review was originally posted on my review blog Deanna Reads Books
Highlander in a Pickup is the second book in Laura Trentham's Highland, Georgia series. I read the first book A Highlander Walks Into A Bar and really enjoyed it. This book is about the couple in the first book's best friends. Also revolves around the highland festival from the previous book. You definitely DO NOT need to read the first book to get this book, but it does give you some background.

I enjoyed this one, but I do think I like the first one slightly more. I usually like books when the hero and heroine have some hostility that they have to get over, but in this one the push-pull of them kind of annoyed me. I felt like it took FOREVER for them to get together!

Iain is a really duty-bond guy, but he's the type of guy I like - sturdy, dependable, be there for you in a pinch. He's also so wildly unsure about himself and afraid to make the wrong move when it comes to women. I thought he was an interesting pairing with Anna because she is this strong independent woman, but she also had her own insecurities about what she is doing.

There are some steamy parts in this novel, but in terms of other stuff I've read it's kind of tame. Still enjoyable for a book that is more focused on the relationship between these two.

These two do get their HEA even though I was starting to have doubts about it. It did feel a little rushed at the ending. I also will admit I didn't really enjoy the epilogue. It's third person limited in Holt's perspective (a side character in both of these books) and I think it's aiming to set up the next book in the series. I felt like that was really unnecessary to the story.

A Highlander in a Pickup is the second book in the Highland Georgia Series and it follows the story of Iain & Anna. When Anna’s best friend Isabel is unable to run the Highland Games this year, Anna steps up to the challenge. However, Anna quickly discovers that she might just be in over her head. And when Iain shows up to give her hand, he knocks her world off its axis…..

Overall, I thought this book was a quick and easy read. I had a fun time returning to the Highland Georgia Series and couldn’t wait to see what was in store for us this time. Anna is a strong and independent woman. You can count on her to help a friend who is need. And Iain is the strong, silent type. He’s very loyal and takes his duties seriously. Together these two are very similar and can’t help but butt heads. And the sizzling sexual tension doesn’t help the situation either. I loved watching these two butt heads and deny the feelings they had for one another. I knew it would lead to something pretty special and couldn’t wait to see how it would all play out.

A Highlander in a Pickup is a fun and entertaining read. You can easily finish it in a single sitting. The characters are fun and easy to connect with. The story was easy to read and written well. It had good humor, light angst and steamy moments. All in all, a nice read to spend your day getting swept up in.

Izzy and Alasdair have relocated to Scotland and she’s on bed rest nearing the end of her pregnancy. Having had Anna’s help, and folders full of “festival” information, Anna is now in charge. With Isobel’s mother and her new love Gareth also in Scotland, a busy dance studio to run, preparing to announce her own candidacy for mayor and the worries over ‘getting the festival right”, the last thing Anna needs is a trailer bearing a black faced sheep and a Highland cow (Ozzie and Harriet) to care for. Particularly since the “helper” that Alasdair and Izzy have sent over has yet to arrive. Despite being raised in a community that has it’s fair share of animals, Anna is NOT a fan – and her bewilderment and worries are just beginning.

Enter Iain, recently discharged from the British Army, and the next in line to ‘inherit’ the caretaker mantle at Blackmoor estates, he’s here to help organize the festival. Never expecting the fire and resentment from Anna, nor his visceral reaction to the flame-haired beauty. Sure she’s prickly and a bit stubborn, but her need to control every detail points to her own insecurities and need to prove herself to the town.

As adorable as the first, you can’t help but laugh at Anna’s missteps and Iain’s need to ‘protect’ her, even as they both understand that he’s leaving right after the festival…. But the two work wonders together – adding elements, taking care of the stock, finding time to do some ‘handyman bits” around town and steadily convincing Anna that she’s got ideas – if a bit heavy-handed with them at times, and being a place where she feels safe and valued. Of course, everyone’s sense of “duty” interferes, despite the many (from all sides) people pushing them together. Both are ingrained with a sense of loyalty and duty, however, and it will take some serious chats between Iain and his father, Anna and many others, and a chance at a reunion that makes everyone smile. A great second book in the series with the little Georgia town that has brought a bit of Scotland over the pond!

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I fell in love with Highland in the first book in the series, and was so excited to get my hands on the next installment! I think I liked this one even more than the first.

Anna lives on her own, runs her own successful dance studio, and is preparing to run for mayor - and above all, she wants to prove to everyone that she is successful and independent. So she relishes the opportunity to prove herself by taking over the planning of the annual Highland festival, even if she is in over her head. Then Iain shows up, sent by Alasdair and Izzy in Scotland, to assist Anna, whether she wants it or not.

Anna is outgoing, graceful, and well established in her community - Iain is reserved, towering, and looking for a place where he belongs.

Despite getting off on the wrong foot, sparks soon begin to fly between the two. But it's more than just sparks as they come to know each other and truly care about each other. I love that when Anna finally accepts his support, instead of fighting it off and being independent, she realizes that his support doesn't make her feel weaker, but rather boosts her and makes her feel stronger. I love that Anna and Iain complement each other in the best way.

This is a delightful continuation in the Highland series - it brings back all our favorite characters, introduces some new ones, and is set in the same Highland town - but Laura Trentham manages to make it feel like a story all it's own, and not simply a repetition of the first book. I have high hopes for the next one as well and already can't wait for it to come out!

Many thanks to NetGally and St. Martin's Press for an advanced digital copy of this book; all opinions are my own.

A Highlander in a Pickup by Laura Trentham
Highland, Georgia #2

Anna Maitland has something to prove and believes that running the Highland Games for her town will do the trick and also help her win the mayoral race. She is not thrilled to have Iain Connors show up ready to help her…I mean…men take over and that is NOT going to happen to her! Only…over time her perceptions begin to be possibly wrong and if she is wrong about one thing could she be wrong about others? Will they succeed in pulling off the games and find friendship or more before the end of the book?

What I liked:
* Iain: a gently giant who is so much more than he appears to be at first. I really REALLY liked him! Even when he made a decision based on a promise he gave his father and I wanted to tell him, “NO” – I still liked him.
* Izzy: a bit caustic but with a heart of gold. She loves to dance and her dance students and her town. She has ideas and hopes to implement them.
* The romance between Iain and Izzy – not too fast and gone into with open eyes – really wanted them to achieve their HEA
* The snippets about Izzy and Alasdair – and the name they chose for their child
* The side story about Gabby – hope to hear more about her and Keisha in the future
* The new kilt design…what fun!
* The fact that there were not BIG breakups that were thrown in just for a breakup to occur so they could make up.
* The epilogue – pulling it all together AND hinting at the next book that will be about Holt and Claire – can’t wait

What I did not like:
* I can’t think of anything…just that the book ended with me wanting to know Holt’s story.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Marin’s Paperbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I loved Trentham's first book in this series, A Highlander Walks Into a Bar, so I was thrilled to win an advance copy of this second story which I love as much, or more.
Because Izzy and Alasdair from the first story are in Scotland, awaiting the birth of their daughter, Izzy and her mother have asked Anna Maitland to run the annual Highland, Georgia Scottish festival. Anna takes on the task wholeheartedly, determined to prove to the small town that she's capable of running not just her small dance studio, or the annual festival, but maybe even the whole town since the mayor is not running for reelection. So Anna absolutely does not need any help from the rugged and handsome Scottsman Izzy and Alasdair send to Highland.
Weeelll ... she might not "need," his help as much as come to want it like a black-faced sheep and long-hair cow want water on a humid Georgia afternoon.
Iain feels trapped. Trapped by his father's love of the estate in Scotland that he plans to pass on the caretaking of to Iain. Trapped by the expectations of others when he doesn't know what he wants himself. But arriving in Highland, Georgina and meeting the spitfire dancer who not only expects nothing, but wants nothing, from him unlocks a part of Iain he thought long rusted shut.
I loved this story. Trentham's gift of engaging characters and setting, combined with fun dialogue and sizzling chemistry is a guaranteed page-turner. I highly recommend!

I love the town of Highland, GA (reminds me a lot of Helen, GA- It's the charm of Bavaria, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.) and the quirky people that live there. However, I don't think this book will work as a stand alone, as there is too much content of the previous book needed to really get what is going on and the author really can't add all of it here. Isabel has moved to Scotland with her new husband, Alasdair Blackmoor, and is too pregnant to come back for the Highland Games that her family has run for many years to revitalize the small town. Her mother has also flown to Cairndow Castle to be by her side. They left Izzy's best friend, Anna Maitland in charge, but realize it is too much for one person so sent Ian Connors, whose father has been the groundskeeper at Cairndow, to help her. She is in over her head, but has something to prove to herself and the town, so is not too happy with Ian. Anna and Ian have a lot in common; between the two of them , they have one good parent- Ian's father, who always showed Ian how much he loved him. Anna's mother was mostly critical and the other two, took off. Ian is a sweet giant, who is socially awkward, but very handy. Anna is very prickly. How they learn to work together and fall in love is the story. Lots of amusing banter, lovely descriptions, interesting relationships and as I said at the beginning quirky characters.

So I hope you read the first book in this series (A Highlander walks into a bar) which in it we met Anna one of the main characters in this one and I had liked her in the last book, in this one not as much. Anna was incharge of the Highland games that her bestie Ivy and her mother Rose always held yearly, it was something that the town really looked forward to and helped the economy. Anna did not want to mess up for a multitude of reasons one of them being that her bestie Ivy was having a baby and could not be there for it since she was having some complications which was another reason that Rose couldn't be there. Since it is so much work they sent Iain who was Alistair friend from Scotland, Anna was not very nice to him, actually she was a little to stubborn. After realizing what Ivy was going thru she didn't want to cause her any worry so she sucked it up and gave him a chance, and succumbed to her feelings for him. Everything was great until he had to leave, and he could never leave Scotland and she couldn't leave her school. What happens well grab a copy and Enjoy! I have to say I was really happy that Holt is getting a book!!

Rcvd and ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions.

A Highlander in a Pickup is the second book in Laura Trentham’s Highland, Georgia series. Iain Connors has been dispatched from Cairndow, Scotland, to assist Anna Maitland orchestrate the yearly Highland Festival on the Stonehaven property outside of Highland, Georgia. Anna’s best friend, Isabel Buchanan, has married the next Earl of Cairndow and is on bed rest awaiting the birth of their daughter, so not only is Isabel not traveling home for the festival but also her mother, Rose, has journeyed to Scotland for the baby’s birth, which leads to Anna being in control.

Anna has felt little control in her life. Orchestrating this festival is the one way she feels she can establish her competency, especially in light of her plans to run for Highland mayor. She is not willing to relinquish her control to this Highlander in her best friend’s truck for the festival held on her best friend’s farm.

As the story unfolds, both Anna and Iain find the beauty in collaboration, their own competence, and that relinquishing control may be the only way to truly be free. This is a delightful story and I do recommend it!

* I won this book through the Goodreads First Read Giveaway Program *

This was my first book by author Laura Trentham and it won't be my last! I enjoyed the characters, the Scottish Heritage and the town of Highland. It was a fun read that left the reader wanting more! The author grabs the readers attention from the very start and never lets it go!

This book brings us the wild red haired dance teacher and the giant Scot who came to help with the festival...the sparks fly...the craziness ensues and Anna and Iain can't figure out if they like each other or not. The author takes the reader on a winding, meandering road through the countryside and gives the reader some laughs, some yelling and some comedy relief. The reader zooms through the pages alternating between wanting to read more and never wanting the book to end.

This is book 2 in the series, but I started here and was fine. The reader will want to go back to the first book in the series because it was that fun, but could start here and be fine. A good lighthearted read and one that leaves the reader feeling happier for reading it.

When her best friend is unable to attend to the planning of the annual Highland Festival, Anna is happy to pick up the reigns as it will show the town that she has the right skill set for her future plans. She is determined that it will be a success and has very definite ideas of what needs to be done and doesn’t need help from anyone including the sexy Scot her friend has sent to help.

After leaving the Army Iain isn’t sure what the future holds for him despite the plan that his parents expect him to follow. Having the opportunity to help out at the Festival couldn’t have come at a better time and will give him the physical and emotional distance he needs but he never expected to be attracted to the bossy and stubborn woman who thinks she is his employee.

At times Anna’s personality could be hard to take but there is no denying it comes from a good place while Iain is very understanding and manages to help her especially at times when she can’t help herself. The romance between them is fun and flirty and they balance each other to perfection.
