It seems I'm in the minority on this one, but I had to give up on this book about 25% of the way into it. The main reason for this is that this book read more like the outline of a novel rather than a novel itself. The writing felt clunky and rushed, and it needed another few passes to properly flesh it out.

For example, check out this snippet from the novel where the main character is explaining what his world is like to an alien woman who has never encountered anything from Earth before:

“I live in the United States,” I replied easily. “It is part of North America. It is packed with over three hundred million people who spend most of their time working jobs so they can buy stuff for themselves that they want and need.”

“Why would they do such a thing?” she asked with a look of concern on her face. “Do they not have families? Mates? Friends? Is that not reason enough to work hard and enjoy life?”

“For some it is, but everyone is different,” I told her as I noticed we’d made our way back to my hut. “Many of us value our families over possessions, but not everyone does.”

“And this is the place you want help returning to, Ben?” she asked with a tilt of her head.

That really short quote summarises what in my mind should have been a conversation that lasted a couple of pages at least. I just can't buy that she'd arrive at the conclusion that our society values material things over all else from just that short collection of sentences describing where he is from. It just feels like the author wants the alien woman to arrive at a conclusion about our world as quick as is humanly possible, and can't be bothered to lay the groundwork to get her there naturally.

This is just one example amongst many in just the opening quarter of this book where this sort of thing was happening. It's like the author is so eager to get to the good part of the story that he just couldn't be bothered to do the groundwork leading there. When relationships between characters started to form in a single paragraph and the protagonist started growing attached to the world around him enough to think about staying even though he is a prisoner who has never really interacted with or seen barely anything of this world, I felt like someone had cut necessary pages from the book I was reading and I knew it was time to step away from this book.

It's a shame because this author is capable of much better things. His Skullduggery series, in particular, shows that he has the talent to create a rich, imaginative world filled with well-rounded characters and strong relationships. However, in that series, he has taken the time and effort to tell that story properly.

2-stars for me on this one because though I never finished the book completely, I'm not sure the author did either.

I was searching through science fiction books when I ran into this.
And I thought... what the hell, let's have some fun.
The story is about Ben, a guy who ends up on a mermaid island, so to speak. Except that the mermaids have legs (so they can have everything needed for sex), they're all gorgeous, hungry for sex, and there is not one single male on the island except for our lucky main character. And the bad guys raiding the island. Convenient, no?
So, Ben is nice looking, athletic, versed in the art of sex, of war (he has to defend his mermaids), of farming, tool making, fishing, did I forget something? He's good at practically everything needed in the story. He's actually better at fishing than the mermaids who have been doing this for generations.
So, this will either boost your ego because you imagine yourself in his place, or totally depress you because you'll think that compared to Ben you're a loser. Or, you will slap your forehead at every page flip thinking, gee, this is so dumb...
But okay, I still enjoyed the read. I needed something that did not require me to actively think, and yes, I also enjoyed the male ego-boosting stuff, the sex, so it wouldn't be fair on my part to give it less than 3 stars.

No... Just... No...

I really can't stand stupid MC's. "May I ask a question?" You mean in addition to the 5 others you literally just asked? No, no you may not. "How do I prove trustworthy?" Hmm, I dunno, maybe tell the truth? Asking is good, but when they clearly want to trust you, all you have to do is be honest and complete the tasks they will inevitably give you. They're not going to go through the expense of keeping you prisoner indefinitely, so they're either going to give you something to earn their trust or kill you...

I've now read five books in this series, and rather than review each one, I want to provide a spoiler-free overview of what I've picked up. This way you can both get an idea of if you want to dive into the series, or if you've read this book and wondering "is this what I'm getting involved in?"

As stories, it's pretty much an uninteresting Male Savior. Says right there on the blurb. But the guy comes in and changes everything because the societies are just too uncreative to have thought of say, bows, or making a fence. That said I do enjoy the survivalist builder element of developing and changing things, and in that the series does not disappoint. MC is perfect, the women are perfect, every meal is the best he's had--and boy do we get details about every meal. Plot-wise, at first it's just day to day 'x needs done, Mc has a plan, they do the plan'. With each book, the author gets better at bringing on conflict, but the author still isn't that great at action, and confrontations, etc.

Speaking of action, the main antagonist of the series are orcs, who are just...stupid ugly slaver rapists. That's their sole motivation. Come in, kil l all the men, kidnap the women, the end. But they're so incompetent it's a marvel they accomplish this. That kind of wimpy superficial opposition--"the enemeis are smelly gross rapists"--feels really lame. What it also means is that there are practically no other men in the series. (From what I understand some readers of this genre get upset if there is any guys, so I guess this is normal? It's still a bit offputting.)

As Erotica, it's okay. The sex is very predictable. 3-4 sex scenes per book. Oral as foreplay, missionary or girl on top (and the very rare instance of handjobs, oddly). Don't get me wrong though, there are legitimately hot scenes. An important thing here, the impregnation/pregnancy kink is ALL over this series. Nearly every sex scene ends with "fill me with your seed/fill my womb up", all the women want babies, they all need repopulation, the main character is eager to knock up everyone he meets, he goes on about the presence of the baby bump, etc.

I personally stuck it out for book 5 because there are raccoon girls on the cover, and I feel like it was worth it. In part for the gratification, but there's a really great amusing scene in it. The conflict is more interesting here.

Also I can't finish this review without mentioning the excellent audiobook narrators. Without them I likely wouldn't have kept going.

If this doesn't sound like your thing, I think the author's other series Monster Girl Base is better overall and I would recommend that. That said this series is not Bad, it's fictional junk food, a guilty pleasure that is entertaining enough to keep you reading.

Another MC that talks about how impressive they are right off the bat but is really dumb and uninteresting. The monster girls weren't event that interesting. There really inst anything new or original about the story. The island thing was kinda interesting but just ended up being a let down.

Logan Jacobs pretty much, like other writers with similar works, pretty much has a cookie cutter way they go about writing novels. And if youve read any of his other works, you know what will happen in this one. Nothing ground breaking or earth shattering, but Ill probably fall for it again when the next series is released.

Shockingly surprised by this book

This is my first Logan Jacobs book. I stumble upon this book by accident and decided to give it a shot. The blurb sounded good and it has a ton of rating so I went in completely blind not knowing what to expect.

Honestly I thought this was going to be a smutty book and it surprised the heck out of me!! This book isn’t what I thought it would be. There is a wonderful story that immediately sucks you in. It’s not smutty it’s just a really REALLY good fantasy story.

It’s been awhile since a book has surprised me as much as this one has. I will definitely be reading the second book in the series, and other Logan Jacobs books.

Monster Girl Islands, Vol. 1 (My Kindle Review)

“MGI” centers on Ben, a young Coast Guard who after trying to attempt a rescue through strong waters, he wakes up to find himself on a mysterious island that turns out to be inhabited by Aquarian-type reptilian women. He quickly adapts to the island, learns how the women live and will unexpectedly become the person responsible to save their species.

This story is certainly something ecchi-like, fanfic-like and pleasurable guilt. I wouldn’t completely say it’s like a fantasy romance for men, but it’s like both romantic and fanservice at the same. The story and fantasy setting is pretty basic and tame while having iffy dialogue every while. In the end, it’s an awfully entertaining read that sure to get your attention. The girls may have vampires and werewolves, the boys have aquatic monsters. B+ (83%/Very Good)

Pretty cool story, felt like Conan meets Aquaman-ish, had a heck of a lot of sex going on, some pretty wicked fight scenes, and creatures.

Too MartyStu

Heavily focused on sex, MC is uber-competent and manages to easily kill animals that these supposed primitive women can’t using the exact same weapons. Then the women make obvious errors in prepping game and also lack basic skills of farming and fishing. The women were so incompetent I couldn’t keep reading.

Rough start that gets better

Harem lit with adult situations, first person
The first part of the book is gripping with a well-done sea rescue suddenly goes wrong. For the MC, Ben, this serves as the transition to an alien planet. Since it takes place in the Bahamas, this could be an homage to the Bermuda Triangle and stories of vanished ships and aircraft. There's quite a bit of profanity in the first half; an attempt I think to prove how manly the MC is, but thankfully it eases back in the second half. There's an unnecessary comment about "weepy chick stuff", but the author thankfully focuses on showing that he cares tor the women, rather than indulging in stereotypes. These dings nearly made me select 4 stars, but the story did improve.

I have the impression the village comprises thirty to fifty individuals, but that's never discussed. Since it's an island, it must be a rather big one since it once supported a much larger population.
While there were no real surprises, the writing was good with a strong opening, and the story got better as is progressed. Definately will buy book 2. Recommended.

Spoiler alert ***

Part of any good fiction, including harem literature, is the relationships. Jacobs does a good job creating distinctive characters for the MC's inner circle. Since all the other males having died leaving many lonely women eager to babies to perpetuate their race, one of his jobs is to repopulate the island. At book's end, after three months, there are two, possibly three pregnancies. With 30-50 women in the village, he's not working very fast, especially considering a big difference with humans. What difference? It's a big one. The native females complete gestation in three months, not nine. This accelerated birth rate is accompanied by a shorter lifespan, too. The dragons, too, apparently live at an accelerated rate as well. It's not discussed, but it's a question whether ALL the life on this alien world are shorter-lived.

A second thing that stood out was about halfway into the story, the MC is transformed into the male version on the monster race, the dragon-kin. The MC barely considered this, readily accepting this change without a second thought. For readers, he started out as human, so maybe there is enough investment to keep reader interest; becoming alien severs a reader-hero connection, so it puts more emphasis on empathy built to that point and the strength of the writing to keep reader interest.

Part of the attraction of "monster girls" is the notion of interspecies sex or even breeding. Ben even wonders if they're even compatible. He's assured the women are mammals, too, and sure enough, once is enough to knock up two of the three main love interests. With the MC now changed into a male version of the species, however, there's no big deal about alien males having sex with a lot of females. At one point, one woman tells him that while they had mates, the males often serviced unpaired females. The taboo of breaking the Western sexual practice of monogamy is thereby defused. It's no longer, gasp!, this human guy is banging many monster females and trying to have babies with them, but aliens with socially weird (loose) sex practices.

The stated reason for this transformation is to facilitate his link with his dragon partner, but the fact that Ben is fertile with these women prior to becoming an alien male weakens the impact of the transformation. Indeed, the women only appear to have reptilian traits with some floppy ears and scales, but they act pretty much like human women. That's not a minus for me, just anobservation.

That's my take. Your mileage may differ.

I wanted a peek on the other side, and I was unimpressed. I was expecting something racy, but it was pretty bland and shallow.

Is this really what men like? Really? Are they really that basic and BORING!? Is this supposed to be erotica? I am confused.
The sex was super BORING!!!! Any adult romance book for women that you can find has hotter sex scenes than this, literary any, BY MILES. This was super vanilla and dull.

Plot, hello, where are you? There is only male ego boost. LAME.
The MC is a nice, simple and jolly guy full of self-esteem and self-efficacy (although, who wouldn't be under those conditions) and of course, zero emotional conflicts.

Savior complex. Hero complex. Adulation complex. Messiah complex.

I have to say that the audiobook male narrator was great. It was the only thing that allowed me to finish the book, that and the fact that I speed it up x1.35.

Did not finish. This is soft core erotica for 13 year old boys. The MC is shipwrecked on an island where all males have been killed by invading orc pirates. All the the remaining women are damsels in distress, even the warriors who are incapable, at least in the first 1/5 of the book, of defending themselves, let alone their village, and must be rescued by the new, and only, man.

Bottom line: Total, complete and absolute drivel. Unless you are a 13 year old boy looking for material to fuel your fantasies, don't waste your time.

DNF. I have read Jacobs before so I understand his way is quantity over quality. However upon trying this series I didn't get too far. The beginning, before moving to a new world, was ok. It wasn't great but it was what I would expect from Jacobs so I was enjoying it. The problem for me was when the MC lands in another world it is soon discovered that he is a simp moron. I hate hate hate stupid, weak male MCs. After passively allowing himself to be enslaved, and abused he goes into power simp mode and I had to put it down or start fighting the urge to vomit.

I've read a scant few of these naughty novellas so I don't have an even chart to compare them. So instead, I will compare them to other blockbusters I've read here.

This book started off with a lot of questions and misdirections. I wanted to know what happened to that family and their poor dog who were doomed to drown in the storm.

Then there was the part where our MC succumbed to his wounds for 4 days and there were a few speeches there about "last night" and other things. Small mistakes on this but found no where else in the story, to the author's great credit.

A lot of authors I've read, when it comes to writing a story following a man by himself, focus on having him start weak-ish and develop strength rapidly with his tribulations. Our MC started out more powerful due to his own lifestyle, but it was written in a way that was believable, forgivable, and understandable. He's not powerful, but he's able, a valuable asset not yet a one-man army.

The author does a pretty decent job of detailing as well. Everything is detailed other than our MC and the dragon. All we know about him is curly hair, swimmer's build. But the women each were given a page minimum to describe how hard they made him become. This was good because the reader could gain a clear idea of what each woman looked like and how they differed. In my personal opinion, too many sea terms were used for colors, but make sense considering the MC's background as a waterbro.

This is my personal opinion as well but shared by a good portion of novel readers world-wide: The MC was a bit too chaddudebro in certain parts. The swearing was very cavalier and yes he served in the coast guard. This makes sense, but it's still a bit much for those of us who still prefer reading to comics and tv shows. Our MC thinks with his crotch first and hardly has control over what it makes him say. Which isn't out-of-place in such a scenario, but there are better ways of handling his interactions.

Now onto the important bits: The bedroom scenes and combat. Straight up, it's lit sh**. My man Logan manages to capture all important details pertaining to combat and leaves nothing in the image unpictured. This is a skill that most PROFESSIONAL authors fail at and this man does it all with ease and perfection. Not too much detail to gross or bore out the reader, but not too little so the reader is confused or begging for more info. Just the right amount to show us exactly whats happening, how its happening, and what it causes.

Our MC himself is honestly a stand-up character. Despite the swearing like a sailor (again I know he is one) and his standard guy speeches (again I know he is one), he's respectable, respectful, kind, considerate, and seems to be a great husband/father. He proves himself time and time again to be selfless, putting himself before any kind of danger to protect those around him, no matter how vulnerable or powerful they may be.

All in all, this was a stellar book that kept me on the edge of my seat for the 6-7 hours it took me to finish. The sex scenes were enjoyable and plentiful, yet spaced out enough for you to know that this book is not just smut. The action was gripping and made you feel as though you were there in the battles. A great book and I am very much looking forward to the advancements of the series.

Solid world building and character development from Logan Jacobs that is built on a concept that's starting to get a little worn out, but succeeds in delivering an enjoyable tale anyway.

The basic premise of this book is the lone human male getting dumped into a setting with a bevvy of beautiful women all gagging for him to impregnate them. We've seen this quite a few times in the harem genre and with varied results; thankfully this being one of the better ones. The protagonist very much falls into the "Stock light-novel hero" trope, is good-looking and has a hero complex. Nothing earth-shattering there but Ben is at least a likeable character, if a little plain. I'm hoping his character will get fleshed out further in book two of this series, which is next on my reading list.

The sex scenes aren't overblown and gratuitous but have enough spice in them to be intriguing; though the fact that Ben seems to be coming across as some sort of sex-god's a little aggravating. I can't help but feel that a little dry humour or wit would complement these situations and ground the character better.

Ben's total lack of empathy over taking life is a little disjointing, though the fact that the opposing force here is also incredibly two-dimensional and feel like cardboard cutout villains doesn't help there either. This is a facet that I sincerely hope book two improves upon as right now I am distinctly underwhelmed by it and guaranteed that this title wouldn't receive a four star rating from me. I'm regarding this book as a middle to low 3 star read and sincerely hope that book two improves on these aspects.

I've read a number of Logan Jacobs' works by now and his quality of writing definitely seems to see-saw a lot between 'somewhat mediocre' and 'rather good' with his Arena series being his best works in my opinion.

I really enjoyed it

While this story has been told before, what pulls it through is the writing, characters and action. The characters are likable and have really good development in the course of the story. It’s interesting to see Ben evolve from a regular guy to a great leader using the skills he learned as a coast guard. I also liked Mira and how she goes from menacing him to finally spending the night with him after realizing he’s on their side.

The action was pretty good. I really felt like the characters were in peril and that the raiders could return at any moment. I almost thought there would be another battle towards the end after they fended off another infantry of scouts. The sex scenes were also interesting. They felt natural and well described.

I don’t have much to say other than if you like magical girlfriends and harems as well as zero to hero stories than you’ll like this. I hope a sequel for this gets made because I would like to read more about these characters. It’s a shame Ben never found that dog in the beginning. That could be a good way to start the next story. Bottomline this was a great book that I highly recommend.

DNF, I forgot I was reading it and wandered away
Started this book thinking it was the least worst Logan Jacobs book I've started. There is almost nothing about this book that sucks or is offensive, but there are hundreds of little things that break the narrative flow. there are odd sentence structures and awkward phrasings but the biggest obstacle to finishing was this:
I feel like this guy was home schooled and has never meet another human face to face in his life. did he have no friends in high school? has he never had a job with coworkers or customers? was this guy raised on TV and internet? none of the human interactions feel authentic. not just scripted, but poorly scripted like a bad sitcom from basic cable. It's distracting and I lose the flow, then I realize that I don't care what's going on because I couldn't care less about any of the characters and I'm not connected to the plot. Sad thing is I also feel like a half way decent editor could have smoothed this out polished it up and found a real gem in here, or at least a sparkly rhinestone that could hold my attention.

Series Review 2.5 stars

If you read the first book, you will have read all of them. Seriously! The same thing happens in every book! Dragon guy goes to an island which is inhabited by women. He has to fight while fighting the orks that are running around the islands being stupid. During the story there will be 3-4 sex scenes, often at strange times and rarely with any rhyme or reason about which random woman is the lucky recipient. Sometimes there is a new Pokémon dragon to bond.

I should probably mark this as a spoiler since I just gave you the plot for all 14-15 books there are in this series, but I won't because you really need to know what you are going to be reading.

Oh, somewhere in the middle of this, the narrators will change and it will not affect anything. (yes, I am still bitter about the skuldugery pause to redo the audiobooks)

Bottomline, Logan Jacob cranks out some really good books (Skuldugery) and he can make truly bad ones (shcolomance), and everything in between... this series, while not bad, isn't really good either.

Wow, I out of curiosity wanted a few laughs at a male sex fantasy and feel rebuked.

For a haram book this has very few scenes. There’s literally more kissing and polite male/female interactions than romantic interactions. What does this particular story tell a woman about what a guy might want. The main character has his ideas heard, he protects the woman in his life, he has a dog-like dragon, he makes improvements and it appreciated in a totally non-sexual way, he’s works hard, he wants a family, he eats meat and potatoes (lol)… I seriously would never have believed how wholesome and simplistic a man’s desires could be.

I’ve read one other haram series and it was all very aggressive and male organ centric.

This first book in the series is surprisingly more focused on different needs being prioritized especially for being the only person with a penis on an island with hundreds of women who want his babies!

My female brain is so curious now, I feel like I will definitely be reading another book in this series.

Monster harem-y goodness

An awesome introduction to a new series by Logan Jacobs and now probably my favourite series by this author (in front of Arena, God of Magic and skulduggery). The action is well paced, the world building is also really well done. The characters are all likeable and the ending is set up well for a continuation into book 2 and the plot line leaves it open for many more to come. The sex scenes are not fade to black, are not over the top and don't fill up the book unnecessarily.

This is the bastard child of Tamer by MSE and Island Jumper, but done in such a way that it is unique and a pleasure to read. I am now awaiting book two to see how Ben, George and all the women in his life weather the storm that is coming. Do yourself a favour and read this book now!

A good read, lacks depth

Liked the book, it leaves a lot unexplained . Maybe it’s the genre of single male surrounded by extraordinarily beautiful women, but the author asks us to accept a huge leap in reality.

The protagonist is former US Coast Guard, responds to a Mayday in a freakish storm and is washed overboard after the rescue and ends up on an island, somewhere??? Bermuda Triangle is never mentioned but it is an area of mysterious happenings.

The island is inhabited by beautiful lizard (dragon) women who are either quite primitive or clueless or both. They are warriors but have no clue about fortifying their settlement. How they survived for 4 years without a male to guide them is beyond....

Our protagonist saves the day, teaching skills of archery, fertilizers, fishing and impregnating the women. He becomes the Dragon King.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked the book, but the author left unanswered questions for us.

This kept sitting at the top of my Kindle recommendations, so I eventually caved and read it. I was leery, as a lot of the author's other work has not impressed me, but this was surprisingly (for the genre) tame and generally readable.

The MC was a bit of an idiot early on (e.g. risking his life and the lives of others to save a dog he didn't even know) but got better as things went on. Not perfect or classic by any means, it is well written and doesn't drown you in the minutiae of building and survival stuff. Regarding the second point, the fact that he came up with the ideas and the locals took them and ran with them was a nice change from the "I must do it all myself" MCs in so many other books like this.

Great start to a series with really good potential

Enjoyed the book a lot although it feels a bit slow at the start doing the setup for Ben to wake up on an Island that seems to be on another planet/dimension. For me the story didn’t really take off till the arrival of George then I had trouble putting the book down and was disappointed when it said ‘end of book one’. I enjoy stories where unprotected sex actually results in pregnancy, and the consequences involved, including the protectiveness that parents will have. Looking forward to the next book which I hope will not be a long wait.

Nonsensicality

There are a few good character moments, and the sex scenes were surprisingly decent.and there ends my praise. so much of the world is incoherent, they have only stone but carve it into swords, they are on a tropical island but grow wheat and don't have boats. Also I don't care if the gestation is 3x faster than humans that is no way that there is a heartbeat, Audible or otherwise after the equivalent of 3days. And that is assuming an instantaneous fertilization and implantation.
After a little ways through the book I was completely unable to maintain any suspension of disbelief. do your research when worldbuilding .
