I always loved superhero stories, at least until I found myself living one.
A wave of radiation washed over the Earth 22 years ago, changing a portion of the population. Less than an eighth of the world found themselves with strange powers, capable of doing amazing feats. Those affected were named Phenomenals. I am one of them.
Orphan. Hermit. Phenom with blue lightning.
After a case of heart-wrenching bad luck cost me the three people I loved most in the world, this was who I’d become, finding more comfort in the night with only shadows beside me. With my powers, I’ve hunted those who prey on the weak of Vega City as I bide my time and wait for the day I’ll avenge what happened to my brother.
When an unexpected event occurs, my past and current life collide, and I find myself surrounded by five men who’ve decided to join me in the shadows. Can they help me in the hunt for what I desire most? Or will we be torn apart by the secrets surrounding us?
Book 1 of the Vega City Vigilantes Series
The Vega City Vigilantes series is a WhyChoose/Reverse Harem trilogy featuring MFMMMM meaning the female main character doesn't have to choose between her love interests.
**This book contains references involving PTSD, death, violence, and other themes that some readers may find triggering.**
USA Today Bestselling Author A.J. Macey has an addiction to coffee, cats, and swearing. Sucks at adulting and talking to people, so she'll frequently be lost in a book or running away with her imagination when she's not spending time with her husband, daughter, or two cats Thor and Loki. A.J. has a B.A. in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and previous coursework in Forensic Science, Behavioral Psychology, and Cybersecurity. Before becoming an author, A.J. worked as a Correctional Officer in a jail where she met her husband. She started writing just for fun when she was little and continued to create stories for years until finally sitting down to finish and publish a book in 2018!
A.J. Macey does it again! I'm honestly not surprised at this point, because she has hit it out of the park with every book of hers I've read. This book has everything; superheroes, a sassy badass heroine, and absolutely delicious and wonderful guys supporting her, along with suspense and adventure. I loved everything about Evera, from how she handled herself in a bind, to the way she stands up for herself when a bunch of dudes try to tell her they know better.
The story wasn't easily predictable and had me itching to keep reading after every chapter. Book 2 can't come soon enough!
The quest for a good superhero reverse harem continues. I liked the multiple POV and the variety of superpowers, but it was all nicknames, jealousy and the constant arguing got old fast. Only liked two from the harem Acer and Silas.
Just think of a sexy group of Xmen (thats what i was thinking of when i was reading this, lol) and youll kinda get what this book is slightly about. Except they dont live in a school, or are kids and the bald guy running the show is into kinky sex. All thats missing is a wolverine, lol. Still the Phenom's (the one with powers) in this book are pretty hot in their own right and the FMC Evera is electrifying (quite literally!!). I couldnt have loved this book more. Witty, Funny, Sexy and a fantastic story. Couldnt ask for more really
Why is it that when you enjoy a book the sequel is never out yet? 😕
I had a lot of fun reading this quirky UF action/revenge story. Evera was a tormented character who sucked me in to her tale. The guys, while a little stereotyped, were for the most part amusing. I loved their striking sparks off each other as they dance around their attraction to Blue.
The story has some great twists and turns, and a cliffhanger ending that makes you want to continue on to the next book... only it’s not out yet 🤨
I becoming a big fan of Macey. This was big! I love that Evera is strong and vulnerable at the same time. She is the badass and the little girl trying to figure out who killed her brother.
I'm sorry but I can't continue with this book and the main reason is the much older man (one of the love interests) "Uncle" who knew the heroine when she was a kid and he has feelings for her. I know many people like to read about romances with big age gaps and I'm one of them but i can't get over that he knew her when she was still a kid and she used to call him "Uncle" and it's too cringy for me. It's my personal preference though. All in all it's a Dnf for me.
** Cliffhanger Warning! ** This book is pretty awesome. It's a fantasy reverse harem, with superheroes in a dystopian city. Of course there's a conspiracy with a group of Phenoms - or superheroes - and an organization of villains. There's also a steamy romance or four, so it's not just a comic book kind of story. I like how varied the superpowers are, and while the supers wear masks, somebody agrees with Edna Mode about not wearing capes.
Evera, aka Arc Angel, reminds me a little of Batman because of her quest for vengeance, but she's not a bazillionaire. I like how she learns about the people behind her brother's death while finding old friends and joining forces with other Phenoms. I like most of the guys, but I suspect that some of them are keeping secrets.
Lots of typos. A proofreader needs to come to the rescue!
I really like this author. She tells a good story. However this story was only okay. It didn’t have the cohesion her other stories have had. It felt rushed. The plot was good. The execution not so much. I feel like this book was more of a set up for following books that a part one of the story. The decision and actions of some of the characters didn’t make logical sense based on information given. I’m not sure if I want to read the next one but I likely will because I hope it helps this books make sense.
Not what I was expecting when I read the blurb about a superhero RH. It's more deep than that. The characters have history and secrets. There are a lot of players and there is some posturing between the guys that hopefully will resolve. The steamy scenes are hot...but why do they never use protection? Is it a phenom thing? Interesting read and excited for more of this world.
I always enjoy a book that isn’t following the usual tropes. Due to a solar incident, different powers are developed by a small portion of the population. 20 years after the incident the main character is drawn into politics and resistance while investigating the murder of her brother 10 years prior. 5 men are enamoured with her and help her cause. The book gets steamy. Looking forward to the next book.
Meh. I didn’t find anything special about Evera. All these guys falling over themselves for her and she just wasn’t that...anything. Not smart, not mature...I don’t get it.
All the guys sounded the same, regardless of age or background.
She goes on and on about being abandoned, losing her family, etc. but then drops it as soon as she sees them because they’re so hot?
Evera (Blue) wants revenge for her brother's death. What seemed like a mugging to Evera and her brother was not an your brother's life was taken. Someone is pulling the strings an she intended to find out who it was, but she didn't foresee running into old friends who left her when she needed them the most. Now they are back and explaining what happened. New friends seem to have a few things up there sleeves.
Just couldn't finish this, it's probably me not the book but the easy forgiveness the fmc (then Def underage) granted to the guys (one of the uncle kinda persons def adult back then already)
After being abandoned after her brother died while somehow magically they " still kept an eye on her for safety" that if you read the book definitely must have only been focused on either her tits or ass because it for sure wasn't on her safety....
Worth every second it consumed me. Evera is a MC you just cant help but to relate to or at least understand. All her men make you wanna melt into a puddle. Definitely check it out
Dammit plot twist at the end! But omg it is worth it! I love this story with the characters and the emotions they go through. Evera breaks my heart but I hope to see her one day happy and not filled with pain and anger. Looking forward to the next book!
DNF at 41%. Premise had some promise. As did a couple other of the author's books I tried today, but I DNF'd them all. I didn't care for the insta harem building, not believable.
Ev - the masked Arc Angel - keeping crime from the poor and forgotten of Vega City; while trying to remain off the grid. Ev is strong, independent, loyal and caring. This is a character I cannot wait to read grow into herself.
The story building is at a fast clip...especially with the hotties!! Looking forward to learning more about each hunk and how Ev’s relationship with them evolves.
I normally really like this author and as always The storyline is solid. however I can't get past the creep factor of having sex with a father figure. Sorry that was a spoiler. I wasn't able to finish this book but will still read her books and totally enjoy them.
This is another WTF moment ending but it does make you want the next book to find out what happens next. I’m looking forward to reading how Ev and her men handle the challenges thrown at them.
I’m not sold on the characters. For instance, is it just me or does Acer seems untrustworthy and manipulative? Are we really supposed to believe he didn’t put some things together after he saw her face given his black hat assignment not to mention how he reveals certain things to give himself an edge/ bump in esteem in Evera’s eyes under the guise of protecting his Angel. Also, the male characters’ personalities and actions seem to be meld and become more and more similar as the book unfolded. And oh how tired I got revisiting the same emotions and plot points (so overwhelmed, need alone time, need Pb cookies, I want to protect you, I want to punch him, I’m agreeing to be in a harem but my speech and actions say I really want you to myself). Uggh. The final nail in the coffin of making this a three star read was Evera’s complete and utter lack of interest in others feelings/motivations. It’s all about her and how things effect her. Why did she never consider they might have a good and valid reason for their actions since she believed they loved her? Although she doesn’t want to choose and has every right not to (and thank god for that because I’m totally here for plot AND the harem aspect) why doesn’t she seem to care that they seem to be emotionally struggling with the idea of sharing and who they’re sharing with in some instances. I hope the next book has more actual plot development and these characters are fleshed out better. This book however relied too heavily on lots of sex scenes in lieu of plot development. Too bad.
Loved this book, loved Blue, Trace, Kane, carson, Declan and especially Silas. Super powers, sexy men, villains, great story - what more could you want!!!
In 1999, the Rad Wave hit Earth, not affecting most people, giving others Phenomenal abilities, and killing many who did not survive the change. The world has been trying to figure out what to do with Phenoms ever since, but none of it has been good.
Life has been hard for Evera. After the Rad Wave hit, she and her brother were orphaned and left to fend for themselves in a children's home. While navigating growing up, they try to figure out how to manage, hide, and utilize their Phenomenal Powers. 10 years later, her brother is murdered in an alley and Evera is abandoned by the only other people in her life she's close to. Now, 10 years after his murder, Evera is still trying to hunt down his killer while working a low paying job and eating a meal every other day. She has a single friend, Trace, whom she only contacts while in-mask and online, and he helps keep her hidden and safe from those who would take her to experiment on or worse. Following the latest—tiny—lead on her brother's murder, Evera is discovered by The Syndicate, and life for her and Trace changes forever. Evera will have to navigate a decade of hurts and betrayals as she adjusts to her new situation.
I'm usually not keen on RH romance, but I rather enjoyed this one—even if I think two of the guys are alphahole jerks who should be tossed—and thought it was rather well done. There's an interesting mix of personalities and temperaments displayed in here, and each man feels unique. And Evera? Despite being in the age category I usually have trouble reading about due to Brat Syndrome, she's pretty enjoyable as a leading lady. She has plenty of impulse issues and a temper, but she's also a good no-nonsense gets-shit-done kind of a gal. She kicks a lot of ass and takes names.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment in the spring.
I love A.J. Macey and all of her work. This was no exception. I love the superhero storyline but in truth tye mystery of who, what and why in this story is intriguing. I enjoyed getting to know Evera and I hope she gets the revenge she's looking for. In this book we learn why she's withdrawn and surrounds herself with solitude. But when the past collides with the present she learns that maybe loneliness isn't in the cards for her. The guys are all interesting. Acer, the hacker, I adored. He gets Evera and is just so sweet. Kane is hot as sin. The others we're still getting to know and I have to admit Declan has me curious. All in all a great start to a new series you won't be able to put down.
This is a wonderful start which looks to be an electrifying series!! I loved our FMC Evera she is strong, resilient with a touch of vulnerability yet takes no rubbish of anyone! This is such a good book I enjoyed all the characters it had humour, romance and action and it’s based on Superheroes! What more could you possibly ask for!! I can’t wait for the next book!!
