Sophie Keyes has made a mistake that might destroy the universe. The Traveler has an offer: go back in time, fix your mistake, and save the world. Easy. Except that fixing Sophie's mistake means destroying her life, and Lincoln Marshall won't stand to see that happen. Not if he can time travel with them to find another way.
Their attempt to jump into the past goes awry and dumps them into Reno 2006, where Elise Kavanagh is in hiding with James Faulkner. It's a delicate moment in the timeline, and if Lincoln takes a single wrong step, he'll change everything. He can't go to Elise for help. He can't speak to the woman he's loved for years, touch her again, kiss her... Not unless he's willing to bring the universe that much closer to destruction.
For the Godslayer, Lincoln might be willing to lose it all. For the Traveler, it might be a step too far.
War is breaking out in Reno 2006, and the consequences threaten to ripple through time--assuming that they don't make the entire world fall apart first.
Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy and paranormal novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.
If you would like to know the instant my next book is available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a wicked cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil
Ah, to be vigorously and repeatedly punched in the gut by S.M. Reine! There's nothing quite like it if you ask me. #brbdead and stuff.
P.S. I didn't think this universe could get more beautifully fished up than it already was. But then S.M. Reine did the Time-Travel Thingie (TTT™). And everything went to HELL⁸. P.P.S. This series is part of S.M. Reine's Descentverse and a downloadable reading list for the books in this universe can be found here: https://smreine.com/wp-content/upload... You're welcome and stuff.
This was one fast ride! I remember feeling that so much had happened that I must have nearly been done with the book. I looked down and was shocked to see I was only 44% done. SO MUCH EXCITEMENT in this installment! It's going to take me awhile to soak it all in.
So... I may have mentioned once or twice that I love this author. I think I've also mentioned that when a survey was posted a while ago by this same author that I chose Lincoln as a character that I wanted to learn more about. This, dear readers, is a lesson in...be careful what you ask for... Just kidding, kinda...
Really, I'm loving the Fistful of Daggers series, but it is not even close to what I expected. It's way more. It's been interesting to see what's happened in the Descentverse since Genesis from another perspective - and Lincoln's perspective is most definitely "different". I know I said that I wanted to learn more about Lincoln, but it wasn't because he was one of my favorite characters. It's not that I disliked him, I just wanted to know how he got to be the Lincoln he became when readers saw him again in some of the post-Genesis series and even more so in Dana McIntyre Must Die. Let's just say that if my first introduction to Lincoln would have been in Lonesome Paladin, I might not be quite so curious. He comes off as an arrogant, grumpy, bigoted... you get the picture. But, since I know who he becomes, that side of him just intrigued me more. Which brings up another point. You can probably start with A Fistful of Daggers, but I wouldn't recommend it. Lincoln's been around for quite some time in the Descentverse and there's a LOT of history between him and another key character that you'll miss out on if you start here.
Okay, enough history... except that's kind of what Hell's Hinges is driven on... FYI - get used the vagueness because even as I'm writing this, I have no idea where I'm going with this review. That's common when I review a book I loved, but this time it's more than that. A LOT happened in this book. A LOT! That book description gives you just a tidbit of the craziness that surrounds Sophie and Lincoln when they travel back in time. I was totally unprepared for what Sophie faced in her past. Lincoln was totally unprepared to face a past that included Elise and no one was prepared for the consequences of the drastic changes made to the timeline. Readers saw sides of ALL these characters, plus a few others, in a way they've never seen before. To say that this was an intense read would be an understatement. It was epic!
Then there was the end... let's just say that The Spellslinger can't come soon enough. Cliffhanger doesn't come close to where characters were left at the end of Hell's Hinges.
I've wrapped up a lot of my reviews in the Descentverse trying to convince readers to pick up at least one of these books. There are many places to start, but I honestly don't think that this series is one of them - at least if you want to get the full effect. Especially because of the fact that Hell's Hinges spends so much time in a past that becomes so altered - without knowing how things initially happened, you won't really understand how crazy... um crazier? they become. You can visit SM Reine's website for a complete list of books in this world. Just go to her FAQ page on the website and click on What order should I read the Descentverse series in? I started with Seasons of the Moon and haven't looked back since. ;)
I received Hell's Hinges in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I liked it but it just didn't quiet grab me for a bit as the other 2 books in the series, I think for me it was when it split into Sophie's own timeline and Lincolns separate timeline. It was weird seeing Elise and James again and knowing what was going to happen and to be fear I thought Lincoln dealt with it better then I would. Fear not there is still plenty of action, doing the complete opposite to what the time traveler told them to do (seriously what did he think would happen!) and magic galour and what book would it be with out a little death!
I can't believe the twists and turns in this book! How everything has changed to the compete opposite! But Also almost reversed! I am in complete shock! I laughed so hard at this it was amazing
These books are insane! Just when you think you may have a handle on the timeline and storyline in this world, there's another book to throw everything up in the air again.
We left Sophie and Lincoln in kind of a bind. Full disclaimer, if you haven't read any of the previous books - what are you doing? You definitely need to start at the beginning. It's been a while since I read the original books, so I'm sure I missed a ton of references to the original timeline, but it was mostly a separate tale. You should at least know where things end up with James and Elise, because the framework of that is critical to appreciate the changes created here. So, as I said, we start with Sophie and Lincoln along with the Traveler.
The Traveler has kidnapped Sophie to make her pay for something that we are not entirely sure of. That quickly gets explained when they manage to go back in time, back to the same timeline where Elise and James are semi-retired and dance studio owners. Sophie is thrown back into her teenage life, secluded and protected. Lincoln gets thrown into his younger body, complete with an even more flawed decision-making brain than usual Lincoln. Sigh.
So what happens here? Well, they certainly screw up the timeline. Instead of trying to avoid big changes, they make *all* the changes. Sophie ends up escaping her farm, Lincoln crosses paths with Elise and all hell breaks out (or heaven?). Either way, there's a lot of killing, death, magic, and so, so many changes to the timeline that I am so very invested in. I still despise the Lincoln/Elise relationship and will forever be rooting for the Elise/James broken love story. That aside, this story had all the action and adventure that you would expect from this world. Obviously there are a lot of things left undone at the end of this book because there are more in the series, but it wasn't a "smash your kindle" type of cliffhanger. I'm definitely interested in where we go next here, and if we ever get the original timeline back.
Honestly, I LIKE Lincoln and his weird sense of justice, but I don't know if he's the best guy to tap for fixing wrongs of this magnitude. I mean, he made a MESS of things with poor Sophie's situation. A MESS.
On the other hand, given what we know about him in the future, I'm going to guess that he's exactly where he needs to be, doing exactly what he needs to be doing. Which means these messy, timeline-fracturing events are all part of the big plan, right? RIGHT!?!?!
That said, HOLY WOW, have things gone sideways on this little group. Gods and demons and monsters and all other manner of crazy are doing their thing and it's VERY different from what happened originally. Which kinda boggles my mind when I think about it too hard. Elise and James and secrets and NO JAMES AND ELISE DON'T DO THAT YOU'RE JUST GOING TO END UP HURTING ONE ANOTHER EVEN WORSE THAN YOU DID BEFORE.
Time travel, man. It gets you every time.
Speaking of secrets...Hi, Sophie. You have a kinda big one, don't you? Also, I kinda loved you showing your intelligence and unintentionally putting James in a weird head space. Because James thinks he's big stuff and then he found out there's a whole lot more out there than what he knows and he has to deal with that and an unscheduled apocalypse and HAHA WHOOPS.
BUT WAIT. THAT ENDING. HELLO. WHAT'S THIS?
Yeeeeaaaaah.
I honestly don't know if these books would be as impactful if you haven't read the interconnected series that builds this world (and then destroys it) a piece at a time, but I am blown away by this wild ride. It's insane. It's bloody. It's a roller coaster of EPIC proportions.
And HOLY WOW it's fun. So fun. Good, bloody fun for the whole family. You know, if you're into that sort of thing.
I... what just happened? I'm so terrified and amazed and terrified right now?! The time travel - excellent. The end result - um? There are so many things to say about this but at the same time I can't, because spoilers? And I'm still in shock so I really don't know what to say right now!
Okay. So I've read the first series that started all of this. Reading this installment, when they go back to the beginning, was a shocker because... everything changes. Timelines are now in danger of being permanent. And my brain simply cannot handle the implications of that, but at the same time, some of the other series already out hint (or maybe they don't?) about the inevitable, but then what does it mean for certain other characters?!
Reine is a great writer, in my opinion, because her words suck you in. The flow is great and she almost always pulls you in. The last two installments were easy to devour for me because it was all about rejoining old characters in new parts of their lives (or old, depending). With this one, it was sort of introducing new people, and because of that, I had to change gears and either slow down or speed up when changing POVs. But despite all of the excitement and angst, I really got flip-flopped by James and Elise's reappearance. They were my everything, and they personally took the spotlight from Lincoln and Sophie; I started wondering more about them than the other two, and that complicated things a little. But it was almost always entertaining (I say almost because the other POVs of "new" people just didn't have the foundation that would guarantee a hooked attention from me) and I seriously recommend this author and this series. If you do start, I recommend the first few series, but you could honestly start anywhere.
Oh, wow. Where to start? I think I have whiplash. Just when I was wondering where Lincoln’s books could possibly take us next... this happened. Tangent time. I recently went back through all of the Avengers and spinoff movies with my family so that we could watch Infinity War - don’t ask why we hadn’t yet, it’s a story in itself. So after we finally finished, naturally, we got to hypothesizing about what would happen re. Infinity stones and timeline alteration. Because, as we know, the possibilities are endless when it comes to time travel, right? Enter The Traveller. I’m not sure if it went over my head, or it’s yet to be explained, but long story short, The Traveller took Sophie to correct a wrong shed made many years ago which altered the universe. Lincoln somehow convinced it that Sophie shouldn’t have to pay for her mistake, and they all agreed to go further back and rectify a wrong that occurred centuries before that. But they only go back ten years. Which, as long-standing readers know, gives us a Reno completely different - and vaguely (VERY!) reminiscent of things we read a few series’ ago. I’m trying to be subtle here because I don’t want to give it away. Let’s just say... this book is full of some co-stars most of us have been dying to see again. And a couple of unexpected surprises in the forms of ancient demons. Coupled with some truly awesome back story based soooo long ago, this book has a little bit of everything. I kept trying to turn the page at the end, hoping for just a little bit more. You know how, most of the time, Sara doesn’t leave us hanging? Yeah, this is not one of those times. Maybe it’s not a full cliffy, but it’s enough of one that my mind will continue reeling for the next few days. I feel like I haven’t done this justice, but it’s really a take a leap kind of book. I could never have seen this coming and I was so engrossed by all the happenings, I struggled to put it down for.. ya know, sleep, etc.. Breathlessly anticipating the next installment!!
I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this book blind, without having read the book summary. It was a very pleasant surprise when Lincoln and Sophie found themselves sucked into 2006 Reno at the hands of The Traveler, where James and Elise are in hiding, predating the events of the Descent series. I got the opportunity to learn more backstory about the two characters that made me fall in love with Sara Reine as an author. At first I was confused and a bit disappointed they were traveling so far into the past, hoping to see more of Ophelia/ Lincoln's family/ werewolf drama, but was thrilled when I realized where/ when Lincoln had landed. I found myself drawn in, waiting to see more Elise and Lincoln interactions, the chemistry between the two characters enthralling.
They went back in time to fix the world, but in a usual fashion, everything Lincoln and Sophie do seems to break it further. With looming seemingly irreparable damage, and substantial deviations from that which we remember from Descent, Reine's well crafted universe may collapse in on itself. I for one cannot wait to see what comes next; if a solution is hiding just out of reach of us readers.
I recommend this series to urban fantasy lovers. It is quite compelling, and it will leave you on your toes craving more.
First of all I have to say Sophie was never one of my favourite characters so her boo hoo I have to fix it routine left me a little cold. Linc seriously needs to think more before he acts but his addiction to Elise is alive and well. I agree with some other readers that the time travel thread was a bit hard to rationalise having lived that timeline already with those characters and for it to now be in disarray - well what happened to "don't change too much or it will change the future." That idea seemed to go straight out the window as everything we know about the future is in flux. Personally I loved James and Elise and relished the opportunity to visit them again. Betty was always a fun character and it was great to see those moments from a different perspective. I am a huge fan of this author and was offered the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. Initially I found it a bit hard to get into as I kept thinking of the previous future but once I wrapped my head around that fact it was all systems go. This latest installment was like a runaway train, frightening exciting and a little insane.
Let me tell you about Hells Hinges! It is absolutely unbelievably awesome! Seriously, I could not put this book down. I took it to work and sneaked in reading time when I should have been working. LOL Sara can weave a story that no other author could ever come close to. She creates incredible worlds that I wish I could visit. This story starts out when the “Traveler” takes Sophie and Lincoln back in time to solve the mistake Sophie made when she was younger. But they end up in different places. Lincoln in Reno, Sophie in her childhood home. When in Reno, Lincoln accidently runs into Elise Kavanaugh’s best friend, Betty. And things just take off from there, exciting, breath taking adventures. Lincoln is his hottest ever in this book. Whew! *Fanning myself* Lincoln has always been my fave male character in Sara’s books. And the ending???? Big twist! Big, big, big twist! You must read this one. You just have too! I received this book for an honest review
Um. So. How to write a review that a) does this book justice and b) is spoiler free? Heck if I know, but here goes...
I still don't know if I like Lincoln. His choices are ... questionable. And, in part, I think that's because I haven't quite wrapped my head around the nature of the relationship between him and Sophie. Now, it's fair to say that poor decision making abounds in this particular volume - and from some familiar characters that I thought knew better. But. The specific circumstances of this book's narrative arc might account for it. Or maybe I'm just looking for justification.
This book is reminiscent of the Descent series in its style and pacing. And when you read it, you'll no doubt understand why. Whatever the spin I choose to put on it, the effect of this book was like being inside a washing machine on spin whilst on a roller coaster. I'm thoroughly shaken up.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Holy Mother of All Demons. This book. Lincoln knows he needs to find Sophie and save her from the Traveler... OR does he?
I won’t give away the whole book with a description so I will just jump straight to my jumbled up feelings. Sara killed me with this book! I never would have guessed the crazy turn of events that take place in this book. It left me completely begging for more! I think out of all the books in the Descentverse this one far surpasses the others as my favorite!
I was so not expecting anything that this book brought to the table. None whatsoever. I was in angst trying to figure out what could possibly come next! Wow. Just wow. I can’t even put into words how good this book is or how much I loved it. All I can say is you have to read it for yourself and you should definitely read it!
Hold on Reine fans this one is going to throw you for a loop. Book 3 of A Fistful of Daggers is extremely well written, and the format is totally different than her other books but never fear it only made the book that much better.
Sophie has been taken by the Traveler and Lincoln is determined to get her back. The problem with that is the Traveler seems to be able to stop anything from happening and knows everything. Sophie is being accused of breaking the laws of the universe which holds the fabric together and the only way to fix that is to correct Sophie’s wrongs. Lincoln together with Sophie and the Traveler will travel back to correct her mistakes if it’s the last thing they do.
The creativity and imagination in this one are terrific! The layer upon layer of intricate details is mind blowing and where all this goes next is anyone’s guess.
So! A forewarning, if you have not read the Decent Series featuring characters James and Elise, do that first before reading this! This book touches on some serious spoiler aspects of that series. Sara hides lots of little Easter eggs in her stories that relate to her other books but this is the first one where it clearly reveals the major twists/events.
All in all, as Lincoln travels with Sophie and The Traveler back in time, of course the first thing that he is told is, "Do not disrupt the timeline." And what does he do? That. Just that. It's an alternate storyline than what you read in the Descent Series which is unquestionably intriguing to explore. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is some of the plausibility of some of the characters as I knew them. Maybe I just need to re-read the books where I originally discovered them.
Holy buckets Batman! What an ending!!! These books weren’t published during my first two read-throughs of this multi-series line of awesome. So this is my very first reading of the Fistful of Daggers books and I have not been disappointed! It’s changed the events so much and I absolutely love the results. I had a dream the other day that the last book in this set was hated by everyone and I can see now that there is no way in The Garden that anyone could hate these books. I can’t wait to dig in to the next book! As a matter of fact, that’s exactly what I’m about to do. If you haven’t read anything by this author, what are you waiting for?!?! A sign from Adam? Just don’t start here. Go to her website, download the chart and start from the beginning. Go, go NOW!!!
Well hell!!! yes pun intended - Sara knows how to turn you inside out and hang you out to dry!! The plot in this one made me feel like my brain had been turned into a pretzel and I had to repeatedly remind myself to breathe!!! Lincoln manages to get himself into even stranger situations, if you can believe it, and he is rather shocked to encounter people from his past!! Awesomely written as always but warning - you really do need to read the other books first other wise this will make no sense at all!! LOVED IT!!!
I read this a bit ago. I was busy and couldn't write a review yet. And it wasn't up to post on yet. So now I can write this.
For anyone who lives in Reno, this is such a fun book! Anyone who has been reading S.M. Reine since Six Moon Summer will love this book. So many old friends come back. Well, not exactly come back. We get to go on another timeline or two and get to visit friends and situations we've seen before but new things are done to change things a bit. I love this idea. Let's not stay on a linear way of life if we are fantasy or sci-fi. Let's explore every incident and person from many angles. By the way, this doesn't mean it is all fun. It is exciting and often scary as deities and demons are involved. I hated putting it down so I could get some sleep.
BUT by golly, I love seeing Reno from Ms. Reine's eyes! Even though I haven't lived there for three years I still can see the bars and the river and Idywild park. It just makes me happy to see this world.
If you get the chance please read all of Sara's books!
With Linc still reeling from the shock of how deep the family betrayal runs his lost love and remant issue his gargoyle brothers and Sophie are his last anchor to hope until Sophie is kidnapped and the only way to save her and the entire universe is to timetravel . Find out exactly how much goes wrong in this fantastic journey across time and universe. Can't wait for next book .
I received a free copy of this book in exchange of a review. Holy time travel Batman. Sophie and Lincoln go back in time and totally screw up the time line... that sounds familiar. I'm looking at you Barry Allen. This book was interesting and I'm curious if Lincoln and Sophie are truly stuck in the past and what was with that ending... OMG.
Can I just say that my heart is doing pitter- pats and my mind is on fire right now. I'm like totally wretched with this last chapter. Dang, can you be numb, excited, and devastated all at once? Because I am. This review tells you nothing and absolutely everything...be prepared to be rocked!!! In a good way...
Lincoln and Sophie go back in time to fix a wrong. They wind up in the wrong time lime and that's when the ride gets crazy. The story doesn't end with this book, so I'll have to wait impatiently for the next part
Yet another well written and absolutely amazing book by SM Reine! The story keeps you wondering what will be next, and has many surprises in store. Time travel is tricky, Lincoln really messes things up, and things may never be the same. Mind blowing cliff hanger ending
Lincoln's obsession with Elise completely destroys the timeline in every possible way and makes it so that she can't kill Adam like she's supposed to. The story is great, but every single book makes me hate Lincoln more and makes me glad that Elise left him in the proper timeline.
