Boyfriends Audie and Calhoun carry on their long-distance romance through college. But Audie’s traumatic history of abuse leaves him with the idea that he has little to offer a committed relationship. Calhoun says Audie only needs to learn to be loved. But Audie feels stuck in an inescapable narrative: he hurts, and Calhoun saves him. Audie’s tired of always feeling like the drama queen, tired of always playing the traumatized boyfriend. He wants something real to give Calhoun — if only he can figure out what that is. And if only Calhoun will let him.
The Low Country Lovers series is a spin-off of the Southern Seduction series and takes place in the same universe; Low Country Lovers can be read on its own.
Audie and Calhoun’s story continues in this book. It’s hard making a long distance relationship work, especially since they’re still trying to keep it a secret from their families. I really really adore those two characters. I love them as individuals and I love them together. Their relationship is beautiful and complex and no matter what problems come along the still try hard because they love each other. In this book we see Henry again and we meet his boyfriend Jax. Henry and Jax are a very interesting pairing and I’d like very much to know more about them. The friendship that developed between Jax and Audie was great to read. The more I read about Audie and Calhoun the more I love them. I can’t wait for the rest of the their story. Also, I have to add that the writing style is gorgeous, so intense and descriptive. I love it.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
I’m crying from the sheer wholesomeness of it. I ruined my sleeping schedule and I would do it again.
How can I explain how much this book touched me?
I have to start by telling you this is a love story, but not just being in love with someone else but learning to love yourself again.
Audie has been through a lot. He has been abused in more than one way, but now he’s in love with Calhourn and now is now faced with all his demons. He’s trying to make his relationship work with the man he loves but in order to do that he needs to let go of some hangups and reclaims himself.
You will feel all that. Every single bit. You will feel his pain, his guilt, his self loath. He wants to be normal but his past shaped him. He doesn’t trust himself, or the people around him, or the universe. But ever since he met Calhourn he learned to have a little faith even if he remained skeptical
Then something happen and that trust gets broken and Audie has to relearn what it means to really trust.
I’m not going to wax more poetry, I’ll just have to tell you Audie is a top notch character and Calhourn is an amazing boyfriend, and them together make my heart swoon, knees goes weak, and my hypothetical dick ache.
Hurt/comfort at its finest. It was funny, sweet, angsty, sad, hopeful. It was a perfect mix between sweet and sour. The characters will grab your heart and you wouldn’t want them to let go. Audie who has been through a lot but slowly learning to love and live again. Calhourn with his wholesomeness and adorableness and literally so fucking cute, but also with his serious moments where he’s Audie’s literal rock. Jax because JESUS JAX that character...god, like Jax and Audie, two guys who recognized something broken in each other, going through the same thing, and the. deciding that they will stand for reach other.
This isn’t a book about petty romance or meaningless plot or stupid misunderstandings. This is a book with substance .
Side note: sex scenes are some QUALITY SHIT. I was literally in pain from how steamy and hot and intimate they were. Like 10/10 quality. I realize not everyone would feel this way but literally they have everything I like in a sex scene it’s like the author had me in mind.
Also this is random but as a psychology student who’s dream to be a sex educator and therapist, the way Audie and Calhourn handled their “issue” it made me wish every real couple did that. It was such an amazing scene, how Calhourn handled things and how they reconnected together. I wanted to print that part and pass it around and say “This! This is how you do it guys!”. Stupid as it was it made my dream seem worth it, like if i got people to deal with issues like that in real life? Worth it.
We met Audie and Calhoun in Hurricane Dreams..well, in the previous series, but their first book was Hurricane Dreams...in which they explore their sexuality and develop a relationship with light D/s overtones. In a series of sequential short stories rather than traditional chapters, Neon Saturday Night finds the two young men discovering how difficult relationships can be even when they love each other with all the bright, hot passion of youth, especially when one of the partners has as much emotional baggage as a season of Real Housewives. Being a couple means more than hot af sex, it means caring for each other and growing together, which Audie and Calhoun do in these brief tales that pack an emotional wallop. The angst is real and immediate. Julia McBryant again demonstrates that she has a distinctively Southern voice with a lyrical quality you would not expect to find in this genre. I look forward to much, much more from this author! *I received an arc of this book*
“There is no beauty without danger, no awe without fear, no love without risk. You have to learn to see it”.
This quote sums up this installment of the love story that stars Audie and Calhoun.
Audie is so in his own head that he can't seem to grasp the concept that someone actually wants a relationship with him. Calhoun tries to appease Audie as much as he can and things seem to always go awry. The growing pangs these two go thru is just heart breaking and then beautiful when things work out.
This book is just freaking fantastic and I love Audie and Calhoun so much and I want things to work out for these boys. I want their family to be accepting and I want Audie’s father to realize that if he keeps treating Audie the way he does that he is going to lose his only child.
I hope we get to see more of these two. Julia has a way of writing a story that just draws you in and takes you on a fantastic ride.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review Audie hasn't been with Calhoun in over three weeks, planning a trip to myrtle beach just just the thing. Audie wants only to keep Calhoun locked up in the hotel room away from the world outside. Calhoun wants to play minigolf and sightsee, he will always get his way after all Audie loves him. Making Audie find his inner child was like pulling teeth, the start is a bit slow but the child in him just want be denied. As the book goes on Audie and Calhoun are learning what makes a relationship work apart from the the bedroom. Audie wants more then to be the scared screwed up boyfriend that is always needy. He wants trust and be needed. This book digs deeper into Audie's fear and Calhoun's understanding. Such a another amazing read, with even a special guess visit from Henry and Jax. Oh the emotions this one brings ALL GOOD.
Following Audie and Calhoun as they continue their relationship, so much love and devotion and still it takes only a well meaning action to send it all spinning. It shows how difficult it can be to care for someone that struggles and at the same time how it is for the one struggling. Just seeing how Audie opens up slowly and lets someone in, tugs on the heartstrings.
I love how Calhoun can push Audie in to doing silly things, which of course he will when he loves Calhoun so much. The friendship forming between Jax and Audie was something precious and I will admit to shedding tears at one point. Henry and Jax only made me eager for their book. The boys are all so well written and I can't get enough of any of them.
Even after being together for over a year, relationships take work, long distance ones even more so. But through it all Audie and Calhoun learn it's the love is what makes it work, good friendships can help balance the past with the future and kind loving boyfriends make it worth every bit of pain growing past the past can take. These books are just so good, they remind us just how hard loving another can be no matter where you come from, Julia McBryant's tales just keeps getting better and better!
Poor Audie needs to pull the stick out of his butt. Good thing he has Calhoun to show him all the simple pleasures in life. It made me smile over and over again. There are so many great moments between these two!
