The chapter on blood loss and transfusion was fantastic. First tragic (so many cells, gone forever!) then hilarious. "I don't know how we got here! We were sucked into a giant tube, then it got really cold -- then we were in a strange place! Wow, this body is kind of a fixer-upper, eh?"
More cellular action! Dengue Fever ... mosquito bites ... hypovolemic shock ... intestinal infection ... I have to occasionally wonder about the person whose body is comprised of all the cells we meet in this series. They seem to get into all sorts of trouble ...
Some of the references in this volume required translation notes at the back of the book. At one point, more blood cells arrive via transfusion, and they dress differently and speak like characters from that there movie, Fargo. It turns out that this was the translator's way of rendering the Kansai dialect of the original. Nicely done!
The adventures of personified cells in the human body continue in Volume 4, mostly focusing on various strategies the immune system uses to fight off infections. (This person has it tough -- fighting off two bacterial infections AND Dengue fever!) Having gotten quite attached to these cells in the first few volumes, a two-part story-line involving a disastrous injury is quite compelling in a disaster-movie sort of way, especially seeing the dedication of the body's cells to keep doing their jobs under almost impossible circumstances.
Mosquito bites and monocytes! A couple hundred thousand new characters and impending doom!!!!!
I feel sorry for this person! Their body is always being attacked! But then again, this stuff happens all the time and we barely notice. Amazing little cells!
Woo, even more adventures for our favorite directionally challenged Red Blood Cell and her friend White Blood Cell! Plus the introduction of new Red Blood Cells! 😄
Red Blood Cell is finally starting to get a hang of things. She ventures to the nasal cavity for the first time. The body reacts to a mosquito bite that was carrying a disease. Then she gets a new trainee to show around even if she doesn't feel ready yet. Red Blood Cell's new trainee seems more put together than she is until the body suffers a traumatic injury and major blood loss. Finally, White Blood Cell goes to get tea and stumbles on a bacterial attack on the small intestine.
Another engaging manga that teaches you a lot about the immune system. This one highlights the roles of monocytes, mast cells and histamine, the body's progression of responses to major blood loss, how blood transfusions help save people, and the role of M cells and Peyer's patches in the small intestine. I know I say this every time I review one of these Cells at Work books, but I wish I had these when I taught AP Bio and Human Anatomy. I'd totally assign reading this series instead of the chapter on the immune system and just fill in the teeny gaps it doesn't cover (at least not yet). Highly recommended to those learning about the immune system and curious manga readers.
Notes on content: 5 minor swears. No sexual content. There's black spurts when white blood cells destroy bacteria and viruses and such.
RATING: 5/5 If you like Monocytes, Blood Transfusions, and Where's Waldo? you may like Cells at Work! Vol 4
QUICK REVIEW Another perfect score for Vol 4. unlike the slice of life format in previous volumes we get to see some story development. Namely our Red Blood Cell taking a mentorship role as well as a flood of new characters. Another change to the norm is Chapter 18 where we are treated to a couple of pages that are more serious. These were fantastic with some great artwork. But don't worry Shimizu does pull this back to humour. Volume 4 is a great continuation of the story and a must read for all fans.
REVIEW Another fun read and collection from Cells at Work!. Although this one was moving the story along rather than the Slice of life volumes previously. And I have to admit that this really took the series to another level. I quite enjoyed that we see our main Red Blood Cell develop more as a character and even taking on a leadership role. We even get introduced to a new set of characters due to an emergency blood transfusion. The humour here is still top level but we actually get to see a more dramatic side of Shimizu's work. Chapter 18 was a great example of this where we get some pages of seriousness. But it does pull the story back to humor and not lingering too much. Definitely a great read and excited for the new influx of cells.
Another solid (and educational!) volume of Cells at Work. We didn't get more insights into the background of the red and white blood cells as slipped into volume 3 and we also didn't necessarily get a big antagonist like the cancer cells before. So a mixed bag and once again felt more like a hodgepodge anthology collection.
And while I don't feel the connective tissue as a volume, the actual individual stories are totally solid and a lot better than the story arcs of other titles. Each exploration of a human body function is rather fascinating and I appreciate how this volume continues to send us all over the place including a nasal adventure and the big encounter where nutrients are processed in the intestines.
Blood loss and transfusion! How cool is this one and as a lifelong and avid blood donor I loved seeing the representation about why it's important that blood supply exists because we don't want to loose all the blood and not be able to save someone. Admittedly, I didn't know much about the shock they talk about but either way the inventive new characters we meet along with the steadfast cells that we've met since book one are all present and accounted for in all the ways they work to help the body out.
I'm still loving this one. This volume features Red Blood Cell more (and of course the intrepid neutrophil and his rivalry with Killer T) and now she's supposed to be training a young RBC which as air headed as she is, isn't going well.
Worse they have to deal with hemorrhagic shock which was a clever way of building tension, geeking out science wise and introducing new characters.
I discovered this series when I took my classes to the first library visit of the year. This is a fun, mildly educational manga series that imagines the different cells in the body as human-ish characters and the scenes portraying typical actions of each of these cells. The series focuses primarily on the different types of blood cells, introducing some different types in the last two volumes. I think the series could have continued but I understand why the mangaka ended it here.
The first two chapters were not as good as previous chapters, but the last three were wonderful and made up for that. So I’m still giving this volume 5 stars. The blood transfusion chapters were brilliant - cute, funny, emotional, interesting and exciting all at once in a way only Cells At Work can pull off. White blood cell and T cell are hilarious and extra as usual.
i really enjoyed this volume, especially seeing how much the main Red Blood Cell interacts with her younger part. it was cute to see how the macrophages change in the beginning. i especially loved reading/seeing the blood transfusion and how the main red blood cells interacted with the new ones. such a cute volume, lol.
On the one hand, not much of anything new, just some different situations and one or two new characters. On the other, it’s still entertaining and somewhat educational. I do wonder who the body is that keeps getting into so much trouble health-wise.
I did not care too much for the Red Blood Cell training someone while watching the anime and I still did not reading the chapters of the manga, but I appreciated that she would do her job till the end though her trainee did not see a point.
I enjoyed the additional character development in this volume. We also get new Red Blood Cells too. The volume continues to provide the edutainment. The creativeness for severe injuries, transfusions, and intestinal functions is great.
