Ahh well..the third volume certainly had potential. I really liked the inclusion of Jean-Baptiste and the witches.
Lou is struggling with his curse and has ow attracted the attention of a voodoo priest. Lou relationships will come under severe strain as he is controlled by Jean Baptiste. This sounds good but why the two stars?

The ending is nebulous and I'm not sure wtf happened to Jean Baptiste, he seemed to be very much in control and very intelligent..but the ending truly calls his intellect into question. Not to mention the strange dynamic between the witches.

This is a story with so much potential that the execution of the plot never reaches the same lofty ideal. I don't know if there is more to this and, honestly, I don't care. Good concept but the story became far more convulated than it needed to be.

I'm man enough to admit when I was wrong, and I was sure as sugar wrong about Moonshine the first time I picked it up a couple of years ago. Eduardo Risso really should get more mainstream work. Batman Broken City was outstanding. It's certainly possible he doesn't need or want the hassle of a modern Marvel or DC, but if the man could simply colour every DC book each month, then at least that would take care of the lifeless digital slop that passes for colour these days. That said, I'm sure your average colourist gets paid precisely fuck all enough to give a shit.
Azzarello is kicking goals here. And whilst maybe not at the height of his powers, it is effortlessly readable and completely enjoyable nonetheless. I just wish I could pick up any comic from Image and expect this level of quality. If so, then indies would truly be the driver of the market, and modern Marvel and DC would be even further into that pit of apathy and irrelevance. I can only hope it keeps this up all the way to the finish line. 4/5

Lou just can't make a good decision to save his life/soul, can he?

I did appreciate the voodoo angle here. I'm looking forward to the next arc.

I still don't know what to think about it. Story diverts quite a lot from its original title. In a sense of making bootleg alcohol. There is another meaning and that one seem to be in focus now.

There are things I like about it and things that annoy me. Like splitting story into two main story lines, and constant switching between them after two or three pages. Sometimes you must read between the lines, because story jumps and doesn't make sense at first glance. Also motivation of characters is questionable in some situations...

On the other hand, I really started to dig art. When you take it as a whole it really suits overall tone, and some pages are just beautiful. Work with shadow and light and overall panel composition reminded me Tim Sale's work in Batman series.

So it has it's ups and downs, for now 3.5*

And now we're in NOLA contending with voodoo priests and priestesses. Various 'shiners and gangsters pop up in B plots but they're barely relevant.

I don't know where Azzarello's going with this and I don't really care any more. Passing on the last two volumes so I can get back to Lone Wolf and Cub.

***Review is for the all five volumes of the series to date

The horror never really blends with the crime, appearing hear and there as afterthoughts to and distractions from the main tale. Combine that with an unnecessary and odd tangent into voodoo that was wholly unnecessary and you have an ultimately disappointing run.

This volume lost me a little bit. I feel like this story is trying to do too many things and is suffering as a result.

After reading Moonshine, Vol. 2: Misery Train, I concluded: "I enjoy this series but am not blown away by it. It's entertaining and real, but also ridiculous and far-fetched. So far I cannot rate it any higher than mediocre". But now, I am really beginning to get used to the nonsense and actually start to really enjoy it a lot.

I think this collection is better than the previous ones. The werewolves could still be drawn a little better, but the voodooing Jean-Baptiste is a stroke of genius. Or rather, he could have been: He is spooky and sinister-looking and you feel he poses a real threat, but he actually comes to his end fairly easily. I had hoped he would be more dangerous, darker.

All the supernatural stuff you can think of comes along in the series. I try not to take it too seriously and just enjoy the ride.

Despite its intriguing premise (werewolves complicate a Prohibition-era moonshining racket) and powerhouse creatives (Azzarello and Risso), Moonshine never really lives up to its potential. Risso's artwork is amazing as usual, but Azzarello's script is unfocused and meandering, filled with characters that never really develop or make us care much about their outcomes. Each volume in the series so far (up to Vol. 4) feels neither self-contained enough to work well on its own, nor do they sufficiently advance the meta-plot. One imagines this series might not have much of a plan to it. What a shame, too.

Brian Azzarello kolejny raz wykonuje kawał solidnej pracy, tworząc porywający i mocno angażujący scenariusz.

There are some exciting ideas in all of these collections. They explore the idea of hoodoo and santeria. They touch on the classic struggle between the country and the city. They illustrate the drama of man trying to contain his inner animal.

The problem is that all of it is done in the flattest, most basic way. The characters and plot have as much depth as those YA Avengers' stories. (Not Ms. Marvel. Her stories are wonderful!) I keep waiting for there to be a meaningful breakthrough where the origin of the lycanthropy is exposed, but nothing. After three books, (each composed of six comics) they have introduced a new bad guy and then moved on, with little cohesion. The only thread that continues is Lou Pirlo, Tempest, and the faceless Italian mobsters in designer suits fighting the backwards mountain folk in patched up overalls.

They are trashy enough to read, but I can't see picking them up again.

Picking up where the second volume of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's horror crime fiction comic set in prohibition era US, Misery Train , left the narratives of New York gangster-turned-werewolf, Lou Pirlo, and Appalachian werewolf Tempest respectively.

Lou is now in New Orleans where the woman Delia, who helped him escape Appalachia, tries to aid him further by enlisting the help of her mothers/sisters, who (perhaps like herself) are Santeria witches. But in the shadow is also Jean-Baptiste, who may have entirely different plans for Lou.

Tempest's story takes second seat here, but her story line at least progresses by her leaving Appalachia for New York.

All in all, it is another interesting instalment in the series, and I am curious where it is going.

Lou Pirlo has problems. A gangster on the run from, oh, everybody, he's settled down a bit with his new girlfriend in New Orleans, hoping her family can cure him of his problems. See, Lou is a werewolf who slaughters people left and right when the full moon rises.

Small problem: Lou's lady love has a spurned lover with some magical abilities of his own. When the guy who creates and orders zombies around takes control of Lou's hairier side, can anyone stop him?

Not quite as good as the same creative team's previous series 100 Bullets, but it does still have a nice, pulpy feel to it, even starting to suggest Lou might not want a cure for his condition after all, and that won't help out that much in the long run.

Things I'm left wondering after this volume: are the ghosts Lou sees "real"? Or are they just hallucinations from all the boozing and trauma? What did Carolla know, or think he knew that he tried to strike a bargain with Jean-Baptiste? And what sort of deal was it supposed to be anyway? In the end, the whole thing felt a bit like the previous volume, with Tempest's deal with the creepy guy: a lot of skullduggery and treacherous dealings "resolved" by the simple expediency of killing one of the major actors and thus making most of the events up to that point largely irrelevant.

This is was the best volume of the series so far, for me.

Love this southern american culture, with the magic, the swamps, the bayou and everything. Azzarello is sharp as ever, writing between the lines and making you trying to think about what you're reading.

As the art, Risso is just amazing as he always is. His scenarios, all the background, the people in it, it's just beautiful. Can't wait for volume 4.

Moonshine continues to tell Lou's tale as we get to see where his adventures take him this time. The answer to that is New Orleans. I loved the setting and the inclusions of some voodoo elements but I missed the Holt family. They were around but not nearly enough. Delia and Lou's relationship needs explored but I didn't love how it was dealt with here. Risso's art continues to impress. His wolf scenes are intense. Overall, another good read with some shortcomings.

I used to be a sucker for stories about one supernatural critter which later start dropping others in, but nowadays it's so expected that I almost resented the addition of ghosts, zombies and witches to what had been a tightly focused tale of werewolves and gangsters. Still, you can't say Risso doesn't make New Orleans noir look suitably sinister and seductive.

Enter voodoo in this volume of Moonshine as Lou reaches New Orleans with the idea of getting help to end the werewolf curse. To raise money needed for this, he quickly comes under the spell of someone who's own manipulative approach is...not so fast - this actually makes Lou special. As usual with this series, it's a wild mash up that's hard to make any conclusions about. My rating is 4 stars.

More glorious work from brian azzarello and Eduardo risso. 1929 gangster trying to rid himself of his werewolf curse with the help of voodoo in New Orleans. Such inventive work from eduardo risso with tremendous style and use of colours/lighting. The writing is so lyrical it almost benefits from being read aloud

As much as I love Azzarello and Risso I really didnt enjoy this at all, it seemed to move away from the genre mashing beginnings to hit a massive road bump. I wonder if i would have even bothered with the fourth volume if i had not already got it on my shelf to read.

The weakest volume in the series so far. The story is just not as compelling, even if the characters are interesting. Lou is just too much of an idiot sometimes to be credible… Risso’s art is still great though.

As one story recedes, another takes center stage and goes places. Part of me wonders if this is a thinly disguised story of marital breakup. Probably not but there is something about a Faustian deal of 'faithfulness' that seems to be creeping in.

The last two volumes will bear it out.

In this third volume of Azzarello And Risso's graphic series "Moonshine", there are werewolves and zombies and witches--oh my! Stir in some New York mobsters and you have a supernatural powder keg all set in the bayous of New Orleans. I love this series!
