What happens when a young girl is abruptly taken away from everyone and everything she knows?
When the comforts of a Bayou home are pulled from under the feet of young Rahab Auguste, she must rise above and face the challenges on the streets of the South Bronx. Discovering family secrets withheld from her, Rahab embarks on a journey down a path she never saw coming, with a mother she never knew.
I Am Rahab: A Novel - Part I is a coming-of-age tale cleverly depicting the biblical account of Rahab the prostitute before the fall of Jericho, as told through the present day story of Rahab Auguste. This multi-generational fictional story is the first in a three-part series chronicling the life of Rahab as she discovers the truth about life, the pain of death, and the meaning of survival.
Life rotates in cycles, and if you’re not careful you can end up on a road not meant for you to travel. For a young girl plagued by her family's past, her path is just beginning.
JC Miller is a freshly anointed, faith-based author who uses her childhood experiences in the Bronx, New York, to capture the soul of inner-city living. As a former student of Chicago's Moody Bible Institute and a graduate of the Te'Hillah School of Urban Ministry, Miller utilizes her studies to intertwine pop culture with divine accounts of biblical characters. Through sharing these stories, her goals are to encourage people to study the bible and not make it complicated, to view themselves through the lives of those characterized, and to find healing in Christ.
JC Miller recently co-founded a publishing company, Jess, Mo’ Books, with her childhood friend, M.R. Spain. Together, these ladies are creating fresh content to uplift, educate, and motivate women through blogs, social media groups, and a yearly online magazine.
This story crossed the multi generations of the Auguste women. Charlotte and Mary Magdalene, Puah and than Rahab. We read about the good, the bad the ups and the downs. It showed what these women went through in their lives. I was pulled in from the beginning and couldn't stop. I was hurt, mad and wanted better for them, but that is life. What these women did show was their strength and what needs to be done to keep on moving. Rahab was the youngest in this story, but still had some experiences kids shouldn't have. This was my first book by this author and I cant wait to read part two!!! Great story, great story!!!

Rehab is born of a tragic situation to a mother who doesn’t know how to love her. Her saving grace is Big Mama, and she is reared in love as a result. Here, we learn of her humble beginnings, an experience that exposes her innocence in an unexpected way, and the painful exposure of it all. Rahab is a child in need, and her life is filled with twists that allow her needs to be met, even in unexpected ways.
I love this story of Rahab!!! I never really considered how difficult everyday life may have been like for people during biblical times, let alone the biblical Rahab. This fictional depiction is an eye-opening outlook that makes you sympathetic to situations that people struggle with, past or present. I enjoyed reading it immensely...could not put it down until I was done. Well done.
First of all, I love JC Miller as an author. She a great storyteller especially of women in the bible without a lot carnality. Her books are always great read for me. Thus series though of Rehab and the curse of the Auguste woman is beautifully written.
I just finished reading this book!! I absolutely love it and I am very excited to read Part II. Seeing how Rahab fairs in the big city has me waiting in anticipation. I would refer this book and actually all the books written by JC Miller. I am a fan of her books and I love her writing which is so detailed I can actually envision what I am reading. To me that’s what makes a book worth reading.
First of all, bad on me for not noticing that the author very clearly states that this is the first book in a series. Since I didn't pay attention to this, I was a little surprised at the abrupt ending. BUT, that is MY fault, not the author's!
This is a wonderfully written coming of age tale of a young girl who is being raised by her grandmother, Lottie "Big Mama", who happens to be involved in voodoo in Louisiana. Rahab is the product of a horrific attack and her mother, Pua, wants nothing to do with her. As Rahab gets older, she attracts the unwanted attention of a pedophile. The author does a great job of horrifying the reader without giving explicit details of the encounter.
When Lottie dies unexpectedly, Rahab's world quickly changes when she is taken to NYC by her mother. I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the bayous of Louisiana and the streets of NYC. These descriptions added a lot to the story.
The book is full of excellent dialogue, hope and despair, and a look into life of a young mixed race girl in the South. The narrator(s) did a great job with the accents and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I look forward to continuing Rahab's story in the next book.
