This book is one of the very finest written on the famous Mahabharatha War. I had the privilege of reading / reviewing this prior to the release and I can’t put the impact of this book in mere words. If I do need to put it one single perspective, this is “Masterclass in Dharma”.

The book analyses every single known, yet unknown facet of the war, with Dharma being the constant theme throughout the narrative. Whether its Bhishma or Karna, Sri Krishna’s clarity of thought and his superlative analysis gives a wonderful template for the mere mortals to aspire for. Like the cowherd guiding the cows towards the right path, Sri Krishna’s timely reminders to Pandavas, specially Yudhishtira makes for some fascinating reading.

Beyond the principles of Dharma, this book opens up a new world of various shastras / Astras employed by various warriors in the famous war along with references to dates / tithes and preparations that went into the war.

This book is the English version of the famous book “ಆ ಹದಿನೆಂಟು ದಿನಗಳು “, translated by Prof. himself. While reviewing this work, I couldn’t help but marvel at the command of English and the choice of words in certain specific situations. This truly is magnificent in every single way one looks.

Highly recommended read for everyone.

K.S. Naranacharya has composed many distinctive works(in Kannada) on the greatest epics of India – Mahabharatha and Ramayana. Because of these works he is also known as Ramayanacharya and Mahabharathacharya.

This book is the retelling of great war of Kurukshetra, which many modern scientists describe as the First World War. And also many say, that this was the first war in known history of mankind in which Nuclear weapons were used.

The great Hindu epic – “Mahabharatha” composed by Rishi Veda Vyasa, is divided into 18 parvas. Great War of Kurukshetra was fought for a duration of 18 days and this war narrative covers major part of Mahabharatha.

K.S.Narayanacharya, starts this book’s narrative with the peace initiative taken by Shri Krishna, which was the final attempt to reach a common ground among Kavaravas and Pandavas. With failed negotiation talks, the narrative moves ahead to first day of war where Shri Krishna and Arjuna indulge in the conversation of Bhagavath Geeta. Once Arjuna clears his mind, the stage is set for war.

Further narrative explains the battle formation, war strategy, post war discussions and numerous battle deaths. The brilliance of the book lies in capturing the internal turmoil which happens in each character. Author brings up such emotional ups and downs on both the sides in very detailed manner and it makes the reader understand why this war was not just a mindless attack of one king on another but it was a dharma yudha, in which each one of them were made to choose between dharma and adharma. Author gives enough space for each character – Shri Krishna, Arjun, Bheema, Draupathi, Kunti, Yudhistira, Duryodhan, Bheeshma, Dronacharya, Dushasana, Jayadratha, Karna, Ashwatthama and many more.

The detail description of war sequences are totally mesmerising. Two sequences which I liked the most, first one is when Abhimanyu convinces his fathers to let him break Chakravewha and leads the Pandavas into the war, even though he was youngest among them. This sequence not only brings up the bravery and courage in Abhimanyu, but also captures the tipping point where the war moves from Dharma yudha to Asharma youdha.

Second sequence is the one in which, Arjuna in order to avenge his son’s death, vows to kill Jayadhratha before the sunset or die. His march into the Kauravas’ and later demolition of the same is no less than magnificent. Times comes when his horses needs rest from the continues battle, so Arjuna ask Krishna to rest and feed the horses, in the middle of the battle surrounded by numerous enemy soilders. Arjuna not only continues to annihilate the kauravas but also makes sure neither Shri Krishna nor the Horses are harmed.

The book comes to an end with not only giving closure to the ancient war but also giving a message to the reader to on Dharma and Adharma. And more importantly apthdharma.

The entire book is filled with so many such narratives which will stay with you as the Great War episodes which you have ever read. A Great read. 5/5.

This is just not a book it's a journey which takes the reader into so many territories never been taken by any author. The book is a master class with sequences of war so well explained strategies of war covered .
The highlight of the book is converstaion which takes place between duryodhana and krishna , baladeva and krishna , Gandhari and Krishna . The questions which dwells between karma , role of god and control of cosmic powers .
There will never be a equivalent book on mahabharata ever that could match this extraordinary work .

Beautifully written and Narrated, Blended Vyasa Baratha and KumaraVyasa Baratha. But felt, He has weakened the characters of Kauravas including Bhishma, Karna and Duryodhana...

Those Eighteen days is based on the saga of the Mahabharata war, as narrated by Veda Vyasa in his Immortal Epic. It was originally written in Kannada, re-written & rendered into English by the author himself. Its a must read for anyone who wants to understand Kurukshetra dynamics. When I was reading this book, I had the entire Kurukshetra war in front of my eyes for weeks. Such a powerful depiction of 18 days of war. Stellar story telling, Stellar craft. The book is high on philosophy discourse. There is a constant debate in Dharma and Adharma through characters to make us understand. Do read The last moments of Krishnavatara after this book.
