Earthbound: Mass Exodus

Rate this book
With a huge asteroid bearing down on planet Earth, time was quickly running out. A mass exodus had begun from all corners of the globe. Anywhere within 4,000 miles from point of impact was deemed the dead zone. Millions of people from around the world were on the run.
After Jim Stone's standoff at the airport, the population in the Orient had set their sights on San Diego, a sanctuary city. Now the problem was what to do with the endless onslaught of refugees.

Paul Falk's second in the Jim Stone Series hits hard like an asteroid plunging into Earth. No, it hasn't happened yet, but it's on course to do so in twenty-eight days!

There's something new in every chapter that increases the anxiety as the end of the world or at least much of it is nigh. Thankfully, Jim Stone (gemstone?) provides the guidance we need.

I can't get too much into the details as I don't want to give away anything. However, the current issues the developed world has with transnational movement of people is nothing compared to an Exodus.

The title serves two purposes: One, we are stuck here and we'll never escape our mother Earth; Two, an asteroid is literally bound for Earth.

As a Navy veteran I liked the way it served as a spine throughout the book. It brings back good memories. Of course, how could a setting like San Diego with its ties to the Navy not be poignant?

A frightfully good read, Paul! I always read for the story and this one works.

I always find it difficult to write a review for a sequel because you don't want to spoil the first book for those who have not read it. But I can say that this picks up well after the first. The story shifts fluidly as Jim Stone returns to the Navy, amidst a world falling into chaos. Human nature is pushed to its limits and in many ways is found lacking as day by day, certain doom draws closer. The human race is on the brink, and one man does what he can to keep control.

Continuing the descent into chaos. Book two of the Earthbound series sees Jim Stone recalled to the navy and even though an asteroid is hurtling towards the earth, human nature takes over and brings out the worst in international relations. Pay attention! This is not an easy read it's not supposed to be! Tense and thought provoking.

The world is experiencing chaos and world leaders are struggling with the largest movement of humans in history as hundreds of millions of people flee the expected impact site of massive asteroid, detailed in book 1. Part two of Paul Falk’s Earthbound series, Mass Exodus, picks up where part 1 left off and accelerates the action and deepens the tension. Falk centers his protagonist Jim Stone even more so than book 1 as Stone is recalled to the military after his book 1 heroics and given a promotion.

But there’s no time for Jim to celebrate as he’s tasked with preparing to receive tens of millions of refugees from Asia. We are with Jim as the mind boggling numbers are presented in terms of asteroid size, impact square miles, potential immediate deaths, and the subsequent global calamity and deaths. That’s just some of the nightmare Stone is faced with before the news gets worse: the Chinese military has five-hundred military vessels headed toward the pacific coast.

Falk’s pace is brisk, his detail necessary and frightening, and his hero unflappable but fully human in one impossible situation after another. And his book 1 heroics have made him something of a celebrity with the attendant problems that can cause.

Falk’s countdown method used to keep the reader appraised of the pending impact of the asteroid is very effective in resetting the reader chapter to chapter and after our protagonist engages in banal activities, such as a shower, a phone call, a kiss. The asteroid is literally looming in the background.

I very much continue to enjoy this series and the stressed shoulders I get from reading the books. I’m looking forward and dreading the next book because there’s a lot of moving parts and enough suspense to keep me up at night.

I highly recommend this book and series.

Gripping Sequel

Leaving off from book one, Earthbound: Mass Exodus continues with twenty-eight days before an asteroid crashes in and wipes out humanity as we know it on planet Earth.

The hero, Jim Stone, has found celebrity status from his heroics in the conclusion to Earthbound. He has also rejoined the Navy and been given a promotion, due to his actions.

Within 4,000 miles of the impact point is seen as the dead zone and most of the Orient have identified San Diego, Stone’s home city, as their ideal destination. It’s the hero’s job to decide how best to deal with the world’s refugees.

With the human race turning on each other and International relations strained, it’s up to one man to try and bring back control.

This is a high tempo story and Paul Falk takes you on a rollercoaster of a journey. Take a deep breath before reading part 3!

Earthbound: Mass Exodus is Paul Falk’s second book in his Jim Stone Trilogy and continues the story of an impending catastrophe, as an asteroid is on course to collide with Earth. It is 28 days to the expected impact of the asteroid and Jim Stone finds out that he has been recalled from retirement to the US Navy. Promoted to Admiral he is put in charge of the San Diego Naval Base.
Jim Stone quickly learns that he is faced with an impossible situation as an armada of civilian vessels packed with refugees sails towards San Diego. To add to this comes the news that the Chinese PLA Navy has left its home base and following behind the refugees, is headed too for San Diego.
Will Jim be able to rise to these impossible challenges of what action to take, in dealing not only with the refugees, but a naval force far superior to his own command, which may have hostile intentions. I’m not about to give the plot away, but will say that Jim is faced with moral dilemmas that no-one should ever have to face.
An excellent novel which I really enjoyed and can highly recommend.

This second book in the Earthbound Trilogy explores the intricacies of preparing for a massive asteroid that is hurtling towards the earth. As you may expect, the potential for chaos and mayhem peaks, as the main character, Jim Stone remains steadfast in the wake of calamity. The author provides us with a breakdown of how humanity would be affected at various points in the globe and the role the U.S. would play in an unprecedented refugee crisis.
It is a fascinating portrait and will make readers rethink how they would react if confronted with a disaster in their own backyard. In this case the action revolves around the Navy bases in San Diego. I look forward with anticipation to the third book, when the meteor arrives, and what the characters have to endure to survive in a New World. If you like apocalyptic novels you will especially like this one!

What an excellent follow up! I couldn't put it down. This book picks up where the last one left off and takes you on a wild ride. This is an outstanding look at society on the brink.
