Death by Cupcake #3

Self-Serve Murder

Rate this book
Waking up with no recollection of the night before sucks. What's worse? Realizing the guy next to you is dead. Apparently murdered. Yikes!

My bakery buddies Callie and Anna are ready to jump into the investigation. I can't let them. They'll learn the secrets I've been keeping. They are not going to be happy when they discover I've been sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. Especially since I've now got a big bulls-eye on my back.

No one can stop Callie and Anna when their minds are made up, though. Not only do I end up smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation, but a friend has decided he's going to keep me safe. What I want is apparently immaterial. We'll see about that.

Come join us at Callie's Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu. You are most welcome, but you may need to serve yourself as our barista Kristie is busy trying to save the world.

Book 3 in the Death by Cupcake series. Can be read as a standalone.

Warning: Although there are plenty of moments that will make you shake your head and laugh at the antics of the ladies of Callie's Cakes, the subject matter - rape on college campuses - is very real and somewhat darker than your usual cozy mystery.

Favorite Quotes:

Not only is there a man in my bed I don't know, but he's passed out. And he's naked. I've never even seen a naked man before. Well, not up close and personal. And he's lying on his back with his junk hanging out. Not that I'm looking. Okay, I'm looking. Is that what a man's junk looks like? That's not attractive at all. It's wrinkly and small. Way smaller than I expected. I shake my head and look away.

That's completely cowardly lion territory. I am not a cowardly lion. I am the fierce lioness. I can do this.

Anna's voice is now all business. These ladies sure take their crime solving seriously.

Not another one! How does this happen? We're strong independent women. How do we keep ending up with these alpha men?

My Review:

Kristie is a twenty-three-year-old virgin, good girl, and social work major who awakens with no memory of the previous evening to a naked man in her bed, oh, and he also appears to be dead. Not at all how she expected her first time ogling a naked man was going to go. Yikes. So it's a good thing she knows a super smart random fact spouting nerd and a pink haired baking pixie with law enforcement connections. I had no idea that a bakery was such a tough and cutthroat industry as everyone connected to this shop seems to be a magnet for murder and odd corpses. It appears that running a bakery is far more difficult that I ever imagined. Written from a first person POV, this cozy mystery was amusing, easy to follow, and pleasantly entertaining, as were all of Ms. Haggerty's previous works. I don't think I could ever tire of them.

This latest installment in the Death by Cupcake series stars Kristie, the barista at Callie's Cakes. Kristie wakes up naked in bed with a dead man and with no recollection of what happened the night before. With the help of her work colleagues Callie and Anna and their boyfriends Ben and Logan, Kristie tries to uncover the truth about what happened that night - before someone else gets hurt. With the addition of a new character, will Kristie finally land a man of her own?

Kristie the barista swears in cute coffee-flavored expletives (e.g., "for coffee's sake"). Also, in her honor, the chapter titles all relate to coffee and could be the slogans on your coffee cup (my favorite: "Procaffeinating: to delay or postpone actions; put off doing something until you've had your coffee."). Even though I guessed the perpetrator early on, the author threw in enough suspects and twist and turns to keep the story interesting. We also see a lot more of Callie and Anna interacting with their partners. While all of the male characters are a bit domineering and over-protective, they are also very loving and lovable. The book comes complete with a recipe for Grasshopper Cake, a mint-chocolate confection. Yum!

This one's a real winner. Are there any more books coming in this series? I sure hope so.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

In Self-Serve Murder, the third book in the Death By Cupcake Series, author D.E. Haggerty continues to weave a delightful cozy mystery series that follows the amateur investigative adventures of Kristie, Callie's Cakes twenty-three year old barista and social work grad student.

Kristie is a social work grad student who works part time at the local youth center and part time as a barista at her friend Callie's bakery, Callie's Cakes. Kristie wakes up naked and next to a dead guy in bed, and she has no recollection of what happened the night before. Kristie has been conducting a secret investigation the past few months into a string of college rape incidents where all the female victims have the same MO, they were all drugged (roofies) and woke up in their dorm rooms not remembering what happened, but having been sexually violated. As the latest victim (but not violated), Kristie is determined to find the rapist/murderer, so with the help of Callie, Ben (Callie's detective boyfriend), Anna, and Logan (Anna's detective boyfriend), they embark on a murder investigation adventure that is sure to stir up the pot on the college campus.

Self-Serve Murder is a thoroughly entertaining cozy mystery that will keep the reader in stitches. Written in the first person narrative, the reader follows the humorous trials and tribulations of Kristie, Callie, and Anna on their latest amateur investigative adventures.

This was such a fun book to read! The reader can't help but get drawn into the quirky trials and tribulations and intriguing suspense that Kristie and friends encounter during the college rape and murder investigation. I really enjoyed Kristie's sassy humor and wit, you can't help but feel compassion for her determination to bring the rapist to justice, and when you add in the hilarious antics that follows these three cheeky chicks and their detective boyfriends Logan and Ben, you get a delightful cozy mystery that will leave you wanting more!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I really loved how the author used clever coffee facts and quotes at the beginning of each chapter.

Cozy mystery fans, I would highly recommend that you read the entertaining Death By Cupcake Series, you won't regret it!

The third installment in the Death By Cupcake series features bakery assistant and college student Kristie. She becomes unwittingly involved in a murder mystery after waking up next to the victim, with no recollection of who he is or how he got into her bed. And, you can imagine if you've read the previous 2 books in the series, this is where the fun begins!

Although this has the trademark humor I've come to expect in these books, the subject matter is a little heavier...it's something that sadly probably happens on many college campuses. But D.E. Haggerty handles it in such a way that your focus is more on the antics of Kristie, Abbie, and Callie, without taking away from the seriousness of the subject. With the 3 of them involved you know there will be laughs and head shakes, and a few eye rolls, as they try to bumble their way into solving another case that the authorities have kind of pushed to the side.

Kristie was mostly an unknown quantity in the first 2 books, we never got to really know her- who she was, what made her tick, what her story was. That all changes here! And what a surprise you are in for- this girl has a lot more going on than I could have ever imagined! She's got secrets and depths that were unexpected, and it was great to finally get inside her head.

If this is really the end to the series I'll be sad to say good-bye! I've really enjoyed the characters, they are such a fun group!

#TeamKristie

Though little more than a supporting character in the first two Death by Cupcake books, Kristie Larson is a standout in Self-Serve Murder, the third book in the series.

The youngest of the daring trio (which include Callie and Anna) from Callie’s Cakes, Kristie is, IMHO, the most mature…or at least she doesn’t act on impulse…much. And while she seems timid, you already know there's more to Kristie than meets the eye considering her 'job' and commitment to an inner-city youth center.

These ladies seem to have a knack for finding dead bodies, and in Kristie’s case, she wakes up next to one!

(Totally appropriate to freak out at this point.)

A frazzled Kristie is soon ruled out of any involvement in the murder when test results show she was drugged. However, she did know the deceased, and wonders if his death is related to something sinister Kristie was looking into – the drugging and sexual assaults of young women who all happen to be in the Social Work program…like Kristie. So, who’s responsible?

Enter Callie and Anna to help solve the case! *Overly dramatic eye roll* I like these two, honestly, but they’re just a bit too over-the-top for me some of the time.

But, Kristie…she’s not (quite) from the same ilk. She’s more focused, and keeps things closer to the breast – the proof being the major secret she’s kept from everyone, including her best buds/workmates.

While Kristie needs to know what happened to her and Dick (the dead guy) and find out if it’s all related to the sexual assaults, she’d rather keep Lucy and Ethel, er, Callie and Anna…and everyone else away from the case…lest her secret comes out.

Of course, Kristie doesn’t get what she wants.

At the risk of angering their police detective significant others, Callie and Anna commence with the investigation plans. Kristie is more thoughtful…and tactful. Finding and gaining access to a private online forum for sexual assault victims, Kristie attempts to build a friendship with another member. She doesn’t necessarily get the information she’s after, but this connection will bring a big reveal Kristie never saw coming.

A couple of suspicious characters keep popping up at the unlikeliest of times, but when the villain is revealed, it’s #TeamKristie all the way. She’s shocked…and caught off guard, but when she realizes who’s standing before her…I wanted to stand up and cheer. I may have screamed, “YOU GO, GIRL!” It was awesome, and I subconsciously apologized to Kristie over and over again for underestimating her in previous reads.

Self-Serve Murder is a good read. Kudos and much respect to the author for tackling such a sensitive, yet timely issue.

Two things kept this from being a five-star for me – 1) the passive/aggressive relationships of Callie/Ben and Anna/Logan. One minute they’re all “We do what we want”, and the next they’re being chastised and plopped on their men’s laps with threats of spankings, and 2) Tyler’s aggressive behavior with Kristie. For me, it was too much too soon considering what happened to his sister, and for not only what Kristie went through, but the fact she was still an ‘innocent.’ It’s okay to be concerned, protective, and interested, but being so ‘hands-on’ right from the start isn’t.

It’s still Kristie’s show, though. Her internal thoughts were quite telling as to who she is. While she may have been falling victim to a case of insta-love, and hesitant to speak, she did eventually say the words, “I belong to no one.”

And that brings the story full circle and cements the vileness of the villain because he took away women’s right to choose. Good stuff!

You could read this as a standalone, but I don’t recommend you do. Reading books one and two will help you to understand more of the conversations, how the other two couples got together…and see just how awesome Kristie Larson truly is!

Enjoy!

What would you do if you wake up naked and have no recollection on how you ended up in your own bed? And what would you do if you wake up with a dead body beside you?

Creepy right?

Well, this was what happened to Kristie after a hazy night at a frat party. With no idea who the dead man beside her was, she called up her boss and baker friends and together they tried to solve a mystery as bitter as coffee and as dark as chocolate. Yum, yum!

Oh yes! The girls of Callie’s Cakes are back and this time, it’s Kristie on the menu. I mean, on the spotlight. It’s up to her to save the world with her expert barista skills and her two troublesome boss-friends, Callie & Anna, to whip up the mystery surrounding a guy’s death and solve the string of rape crimes in the university. I loved Callie in her first book (Never Trust a Skinny Baker) and she was really a damn fine young lady with a know-it-all attitude. And I love her. Anna, their tiny pink pixie-haired baker was hilarious. She bounced wherever whenever whatever, and her sleuthing skills was downright fun to discover. Callie & Anna’s better halves and cop/protectors, Ben and Logan were not so bad either. These police officers can arrest me anytime, so search warrants needed.

And now, Kristie, the coffee addict, coffee maker, coffee lover rich daughter who worked at a Youth Center and in the bakery, who steadily told everyone that she didn’t need a man or to be in a relationship, and whose main goal was to save the abused women from the crutches of a serial rapist. (okay, that was a mouthful.. let me sip coffee first… )

What she did not expect though, was a man who would call her baby every chance he got. I call him Man of Steel though, given his hunky physique and sexy character. I get that he was instantly attracted to Kristie, but I wasn’t much into their “you sleep on the couch, I sleep on my room” situation on their first day of meeting. For all I know, Tyler could be the rapist! He was a complete stranger for fudge’s sake! Although I couldn’t fault the girls to ogle him because he was really gorgeous and manly and handsome and hottie and hunk and did I say hottie? But still, I thought theirs was a whirlwind kind of affair.

And the clues and evidences they were gathering for their sleuthing exploits, hmmm, let me just say, it was really better if they let the cops do their jobs. Because I wasn’t really solved with Kristie’s investigating skills. Even Callie and Anna’s meddling didn’t surprise me this time. Although Anna’s rear getting spanked was a sight that cracked me up LOL.

Overall, this had been another exciting and laughter-filled cozy mystery by DE Haggerty. This author never fails to impress me. I’ve read almost all her books and I would continue supporting her because I love her stories and her writing skills and amusing sweet tales. Self-Serve Murder is a whole pink swirls of buttercream goodness!

Received in exchange for a honest review.

this was great. Not as funny as the other two in the series but just as fun and wacky. Callie and Anna are a hoot. They have these sweet boyfriends who are so alpha but they do what they want and ignore what they say. Kristie is in trouble now and she has her own alpha to contend with. Tyler comes into the picture and he tries to take control. He is demanding and an unknown but also adorable and commanding. It wants to do what is best for Kristie but goes about it all wrong. He deceives her first and than tries to take over. I understand why and it adds great entertainment but he needed to tone it down when it came to Kristie and the other woman.

Anna is the pixie with spunk, callie the know it all that is feisty and knows how to get what she wants without having it seem like she is. For Kristie these two are there for her no matter what. when she keeps the secrets she does they are still there for her. she is in trouble now and it is clear who is there for her. Callie, Anna and the gang. Kristie wakes up with no memory of what happened but a man is in her bed and he is no longer breathing. This is where her adventure begins. Her life is opened up and she has love come into her world. Twists and turns occur and we get so many fun moments. We learn about assault on campuses and how it is that people get away with it. We learn how strong Kristie is and how stubborn she is as well. We watch her fight for herself and others. She is lost when it comes to Tyler and that is a fun adventure to see It is a rollercoaster ride of fun. they are opposites. She is fierce in her independence and he is fierce in his desire to protect her but also claim her. he deceives her but not on purpose. He is trying to help his sister so at first you are furious and distrustful of him but as you see him for who he is you begin to root for him and Kristie.

this is a fun sassy book that fits perfectly in this series. You get the alpha male who is ignored when needed but gets the girl. The strong heroine who goes off to try to figure out who killed and why. The sidekicks who ignore their boyfriends so they can become detectives and help Kristie. the story is light hearted and fun, sassy and sweet. A truly great addition to this fun and sassy series.

Note - I reviewed an ebook copy supplied by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I had no idea what to expect with this book as I've never read a cosy mystery before (watched plenty of TV shows though). It was clear from the start that this was not a serious mystery book, and once this is established it's easy to sit back and enjoy the escape from reality.

I hadn't read the previous two books in the series, but wasn't worried as it stated this could be read as a standalone. The crime itself was resolved in this book, but because the characters are so settled in their world and relationships well established, I found myself wishing I had read the previous books first.

The constant reference to coffee was clever and inventive, but at times when the situations were more serious I found it distracting.

I thought I'd guessed the culprit early on, but a few red herrings along the way had me second guessing myself.

My only hang-up with this novel was the way the men treated 'their' women. The men were very bossy and macho all the time. I also found the way Kristie's love interest literally forced his way into her life while she did little to stop it, very unrealistic.

Apart from that it was a fun, easy read and should appeal to people who enjoy cosy mysteries like Agatha Raisin, Murder She Wrote and Rosemary and Thyme (opinion based on tv viewing).

description
DE Haggerty has fast become a must read author for me. With Self-Serve Murder she brings us another addicting concoction of humor, mystery, and romance. Just a little taste and I was lost in the pages.
We've had a chance to get to know Kristie a bit in the past two Death By Cupcake novels. During Bring Your Own Baker, it was clear that something was going on with Kristie and we quickly come to find out that she's been doing her own investigation into on campus rape cases. When she wakes up in bed, naked, and with no memory of how she, or the dead body next to her, got there, it's clear someone is sending her a message. Little does the perpetrator know, Kristie, Callie, and Anna, are not ones to let something like this go. As the three women, once again, set out to solve the case, we are shown their unstoppable drive and dedication to justice.
It wouldn't be a Haggerty novel without those laugh out loud moments she does so well. From as early as the dedication, I found myself giggling. Even with the serious nature of the crimes, she has a way of keeping things light without making light of the situation.
In addition to the comedy, we are dropped into an intriguing mystery and introduced to a seriously sexy new alpha. Tyler was intense and protective. Overlooking his excessive use of the word "baby", I was completely smitten. The push and pull between him and Kristie was endearing and had me begging for more.
I had intended on savoring this story but I ended up devouring it in one sitting instead. I'm not sure if there are plans for any more stories in this series but I'm eager to see what Haggerty gives us next.

This book grabbed me from the beginning! Kristie woke up with no memory of the night before. She didn't have a clue why she was naked and had a dead man in her bed. Of course, I wanted answers so I kept reading. Kristie works at Callie's Cakes part-time and goes to college. There had been several rapes on campus so Kristie went to a bar frequented by students to investigate. That didn't work for her. She got roofied and the next thing she knew she was home in bed - not alone (remember the dead guy). That explained the memory loss but not the dead man.

I loved this story with Kristie and her colleagues from Callie's Cakes, Callie and Anna, trying to find the murderer. How can investigating a murder be funny? With these three "working the case" that's how. Kristie calling her friends the troublesome twosome gives you an idea of how bad they are. These women are so much fun, each having quirks, but likable. In this book we got to know more about Kristie who is sweet and kind. It's obvious she would never murder anyone so how did the man get in her bed - dead?

This is a great book - great series! - so when I was offered a complementary copy, I jumped at the chance to read it. Please note that I am reviewing this book on my own as I do with everything I read and not because I was asked to.

It was difficult for me to rate this mystery. My dilemma was how the hot, scary men were depicted.
This is a nontraditional cozy mystery dealing with a very important yet sensitive topic.
I loved the three women looking into the mystery and attempting to bring change and take action where the authorities are not. When you discover who is the perpetrator, I hope it makes you angry because it is very plausible. Even the campus police receptionist is to be applauded and admired.

But these strong, spirited, intelligent women, especially Kristie, accepting caveman behavior from the men in their lives was too over the top for me. Even as I could see the women "handling" the men.
Tyler, who I wanted to like, to see his positive traits, could not overcome the "ick factor" of calling Kristie "baby" upon first contact. It was too much to soon and too often.

The story pace is fast and the women put themselves into troublesome situations more darkly humorous than dangerous. Since the duo of friends have already solved murders before her, Kristie feels she can't let this one go. Definitely too close to home.

Self-Serve Murder is Kristie's story (though she spells her name wrong) (HA - see what I did there?). Kristie works at the bakery owned by Callie from book 1 in this series. Their co-worker is Anna, from book 2 in the series. That being said, each book can be read as a standalone.

Kristie wakes up one morning not only with no memory of how she got there, but also next to a dead man she doesn't recognize. This is enough to make Callie and Anna determined to help find "who did it" against the wishes of their man-folk, who just happen to be policemen.

I enjoy the humorous situations and the characters. However, I was able to figure out "who did it" pretty quickly. I also found the "insta-love" Tyler felt for Kristie a bit off putting rather than endearing.

Not a bad story and it is a quick read for an afternoon made for reading when you need a few hours of getaway.

Even though this is a standalone book, I am really looking forward to reading the first two now :)
If I woke up naked in my own bed, not only knowing how I got there but having a dead body next to me!?!?!? I'd be freaked to say the least...
Kristie is dealing with exactly this after a big night at a frat party...
What's a girl to do? She calls up her baker friends and boss and is on her way to solve the mystery.
As she and her friends begin to try to unfold the deadly mystery...there is yet another twist to the plot...

This is a cozy mystery, but one that doesn't shy away from the harsher realities of life.  In this one our resident social worker in training come youth centre leader come barista has woken up feeling woozy and with no recollection of how she got home from the bar the previous night, if that isn't bad enough she has woken up naked ... with a naked man next to her, or should we say a naked corpse! Kristie starts to panic and phones Callie and Anna who promptly turn up with their boyfriends in tow, luckily Ben and Logan are both cops and before you can say caramel latter Kristie is bundled up and on the way to the hospital with Logan and Anna to get checkout out.  At the hospital they discover that she was given Rohypnol but luckily, or maybe oddly she wasn't raped, it is at this point that she has to admit to Callie and Anna that she has been looking into campus rapes and so Callie and Anna INSTANTLY offer to help. When she joins a private forum for rape victims she ends up chatting with a girl called Alex, who shuts down if the conversation ever gets personal, then again outside a Frat party we discover why!

I will confess that I guessed the killer/rapist pretty much straight away but even with that this was a great book and a great addition to the series!

All though this book dealt with a serious subject matter, it was still Lucy and Ethel aka Anna and Callie plus Kristie. It was pretty intense but it did have a lot of fun moments.
Kristie is a quiet, shy, serious about getting her degree. But she has secrets she's keeping from her friends. But when she wakes up naked next to a dead guy all the secrets need to be shared. During the investigation it comes to light that a guy is also looking into rapes on the campus. Unknown at the time Kristie has been communicating with him. Tyler, a fireman decides he will be her shadow. It cute how she fights him the whole time while Callie and Anna laugh and smile about it like they know something she don't.
It takes them a minute to figure out the puzzle pieces. The fun part was Tyler trying to work on Kristie about their relationship which she denies. The caveman staked a claim on her and had no problem telling others he had. Everybody was happy about it but Kristie.
I really enjoyed this book and the series. I hope there are plenty more to come.

"Waking up with no recollection of the night before sucks. What's worse? Realizing the guy next to you is dead. Apparently murdered. Yikes!"

Writing: The writing is very basic. It's not terrible but it's very mediocre and there are quite a few mistakes.

Characters: The girls in the books are all written exactly the same. The guys again are all exactly the same. Alpha, pushy, overbearing, a bit stalkerish.

Story: The stories are pretty dumb. Someone gets murdered in every book and 1 of the main girl characters is the suspect and the story is them figuring it out with their brand new hot boyfriend that is either a cop, undercover detective or a fireman. It's so cookie cutter cringe!

Overall: I am reading this series purely for a food book challenge.

Review

I have loved this series, and this 3rd book is no exception. Anna and Callie are up to their usual hijinks, when their barista Kristie wakes up naked in her bed with a naked body beside her. There is a rapist on campus, slipping roofies into drinks and leaving no DNA or other clues behind. In spite of the 2 large, scary cop boyfriends (and a fireman who shows up and won't leave Kristie's side), the girls launch their own investigation, and the antics are hilarious. I love how the guys are so macho, but turn to much around their women. Rape is such a serious topic, and Ms. Haggerty did a good job writing about it. I'm glad there's another book in the series, and I just added it to my Kindle.

Disappointing

Book Three is told in Kristie's voice, which apparently requires a surfeit of coffee-centric cute-isms (spoiler alert: once or twice is cute, but continued overuse just becomes obnoxious and annoying). Lucy/Ethel references are plentiful, but the corresponding madcap fun and humor are woefully absent. The well-worn path of "girl + alpha male who immediately claims ownership = HEA" is followed with slavish devotion. Kristie seems like an inane twit, but the rest of the group is likable enough. The mystery is rather pedestrian, the investigation is subpar, and the villain is almost immediately apparent. I've enjoyed this author before which makes "Self-Serve Murder" a surprising disappointment, and I don't plan to continue with this series.

Tough Subject

This author handles the extremely brutal subject of rape with exactly the right touches of delicate and still making the situation clear about how horrific the actions and the repercussions are. Just so you know, my favorite of the née characters in the series is Tyler. 😊

As well as being a grad student and working part time at the local youth centre, Kristie Larson helps out as a barista at Callie’s Cakes. When she finds herself in bed one morning with a man she doesn’t know, and soon realises is dead, dazed and shocked she calls her best friend Anna. Kristie has no memory of the previous night, the man or how he ended up at her house, much less in her bed. She and her two friends, Callie and Anna, and their police detective boyfriends, Logan and Ben, begin to unravel the mystery and find out more than they bargained for.

Kristie is cleared of involvement in the death; tests prove she had been drugged and hers wasn’t the first case of this happening. There has been a string of date rapes on the college campus, all with the same approach, and although Kristie comes across as quite diffident and unassuming she’s determined to root out the perpetrator. After accessing a forum dedicated to assault victims and connecting with an online member, she’s in for quite a shock when she finally meets ‘Alex’.

Kristie has depth, tact and is a coffee addict. She’s also keeping a secret from her friends. I enjoyed learning about her life and connection and commitment to the Youth Centre. The three women have a great relationship and are always there for each other. Kristie is easy to like and not as over the top as the other two – Anna, the pink haired pixie and know it all Callie, aka the troublesome twosome.

Reading the previous books would probably have given me a deeper understanding of, and the dynamics between, the characters but having said that I did get a good idea of the personalities. Self-Serve Murder can definitely be read as a standalone. The storyline is emotional given the subject matter, written well and sympathetically, the humour in the appropriate places, and with a suitably creepy and repellent villain.

Told in the first person from Kristie’s perspective, Self-Serve Murder is entertaining, with likeable, sometimes ditzy, female protagonists. I wasn’t too sure about the men. I found Tyler irritating with his continual use of ‘baby’ when talking to Kristie and the insta-love aspect was too much too soon. All three men were a bit too alpha for me….shades of quite assertive cavemen types.

Self-Serve Murder is a cozy mystery with a dark undercurrent which is shockingly all too true. The figure of over 11% of college students subjected to rape on college campuses is correct. And although this is a fun, lighthearted tale the subject of rape is treated very seriously.

I chose to read and review Self-Serve Murder (Death By Cupcake #3) for Rosie Amber’s book review team, based on a digital copy from the author.

What would you do if you woke up in your bed with a naked dead guy next to you? Without any memory of what might've happened? That's exactly what Kristie has to deal with. Being a good girl and a social worker makes things even worse. How could she end up in a situation like this? It seems she'll have to find out... with a bit of help from her boss lady, coworker, and two policemen who seem to be glued to their ladies ;).

Yet another fun and light read from D.E. Haggerty. It was just what I needed during these cold days in overcrowded trains. Well... can't say it's cold inside a train like this, but there's the waiting part before it finally arrives.

Anyway, those who read the previous books from "Death by Cupcake" series, already had an occasion to meet Kristie - a young student working in the bakery. This time story is told from her point of view with pink-haired pixie and nerdy bakery owner right next to her, helping to solve the new mystery. There will be some funny moments, there will be some chilly ones and some strange ones too. All within 150 pages.

Oh, and once again I fell in love with chapter titles :). This time it's all about coffee, which I find totally fitting to my growing addiction :P. I got myself this curious chocolate-orange coffee lately and I have to say as much as I love the aroma, the taste is a bit too bitter.

Even though there are few things that annoy me a bit in these books, like they guys being so pushy, I still can't help myself but like them. They are so cute and adorable and these feel like perfect reads during cold evenings. Especially with all the sweets and coffee being all-present.

But there's also another aspect of this story. It might be just an entertaining read, but the topic it touches is real and there really are women struggling with these kinds of issues and with not much help either. Reading a story like this might not help them, but maybe it will make others realize this issue exists.

I really enjoy these Haggerty's stories and I hope to read even more in the future. They haven't disappointed me yet and I have a feeling they never will :).

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is my favorite of the three books in this story! While I loved the stories about Callie and Anna, Kristie's story just seemed to be a more realistic, emotionally charged story.

We learn more about Kristie and her life in this book...for instance, her true connection to the Youth Center (which made me love her even more). I also loved that she tried to be the voice of reason to Anna and Callie, while taking risks of her own, ignoring her own voice of reason, Tyler.

The subject matter of rape on college campuses is very timely and serious, and the author handles it very well, while working in humor at the same time. This entire series is a well-written one with enjoyable characters.

This is such a fun series and I really enjoyed reading Kristie's story. I love Callie & Anna and their alpha guys and now Tyler. I found myself smiling and laughing a lot. Also, the story did deal with rape on campus and it was really well written.
